Chapter 4: Even Demonic Spirits Need Style
Chapter 4: Even Demonic Spirits Need Style
Whoosh whoosh, Gurgle gurgle gurgle
After a thoroughly satisfying flush, the woman was washed away without a trace by the toilet, and her ghostly screams came to an abrupt stop. The faucet above the sink continued to run with a whoosh whoosh sound, but what flowed out was no longer yellow pus or bloody rust-colored liquid. It had returned to its original clean clarity, and the foul smell permeating the air had vanished as if it had never existed.
“What the hell?”
“What a half-hearted prank. This opening jump-scare routine from holographic horror games is so outdated.”
Pei Ye shook her head and calmly scooped up a handful of water to wash her face and hands.
After cleaning away the eye crust and the grease on her face, she immediately felt refreshed.
She did not use the disposable towel prepared by the hospital. Instead, she casually pulled out two tissues and dried the water from her face and hands.
At the same time, several puddles of water mysteriously appeared on the floor of the hospital morgue, and faint horrifying ghostly sobs could be heard.
Waaah waaah waaah (╥╯^╰╥)
A strange cold wind drifted through the icy morgue.
A barefoot boy wearing a blue-striped hospital gown stopped in front of one of the puddles. The exposed skin around his ankles was deathly pale.
“You ran into a Celestial Master?”
A gust of cold wind passed by, and a woman with loose black hair appeared within the puddle. She sat pitifully on the ground hugging her knees, her face covered in bloody tears.
The boy said mildly, “But you don’t have the scent of a Celestial Master on you.”
The woman had no tongue and no eyes, but she still had ears and a nose, allowing her to judge the boy’s position through hearing and smell.
She whimpered and cried blindly, black-red pus and blood gushing from her eye sockets.
Yet the boy could understand her complaints, and his handsome pale brows furrowed.
“You tried to scare someone and ended up getting scared yourself and flushed into a toilet?”
His voice was so flat that no emotion could be heard in it, but the woman knew he was mocking her, and she immediately cried even harder.
She was an old ghost who had lived in the hospital for years.
Her only amusement was frightening humans with weak yang energy.
Who would have thought that after years of never failing and leaving behind countless chilling hospital legends, she would suffer her first defeat at Pei Ye’s hands.
This was simply a humiliation in her ghostly life!!!
How was she supposed to maintain her standing among the hospital’s ghosts now!!!
The boy pursed his lips and raised a hand to rub the top of the woman’s head.
After that simple action, the woman’s translucent form became noticeably more solid, and the yin energy surrounding her grew several degrees heavier.
“Where does she live?”
The woman whimpered twice and told him the floor and room number where Pei Ye was staying.
The boy curled his lips into a smile and said in a domineering manner, “I’ll go meet her.”
Among the many old ghosts in the hospital, he was the fiercest one. He occupied the mortuary with the densest yin energy and was the leader of all the hospital ghosts, a Ghost King whose title alone sounded incredibly impressive!
Scaring his subordinate on his own territory and nearly dispersing one of his underlings, that was something he could not tolerate.
By the time the ghostly young boss crawled through the ventilation ducts and reached Room 308 on the eighteenth floor where Pei Ye had been staying, the hospital bed was already empty.
“Where is she?”
The boy hung at the ventilation outlet and asked the female ghost.
The female ghost whimpered something, and the boy stretched out a bare foot and kicked her, sending her rolling twice.
The female ghost had asked why he did not simply take the elevator upstairs and instead insisted on painstakingly crawling through ventilation shafts.
“We’re ghosts,” the boy said matter-of-factly. “Humans have human ways, ghosts have ghost ways! Ghosts should travel by unconventional routes to fit their identities. Taking the elevator has no style!”
But while they were laboriously crawling through the ventilation shafts up to the eighteenth floor, Pei Ye had already paid the remaining fees and been discharged from the hospital.
“Driver, how much to get to Wudaokou Nursing Vocational College?”
Pei Ye asked about the fare. Just as she was about to open the car door and get in, she keenly sensed an unfriendly gaze.
Following her instincts, she looked over and discovered a figure standing by a window on the eighteenth floor of the hospital building. The figure bared its teeth at her, revealing a scarlet mouth.
Pei Ye raised an eyebrow and responded with a middle finger.
Did such a crude projection prank really think it could scare her?
Flushing it down the toilet had only been a minor punishment. If she ran into that brat again, she would smash all the equipment.
“Driver, let’s go.”
After fastening her seat belt, Pei Ye took out the phone and continued studying Love and Raising a Child.
When Pei Ye placed her finger on the egg, an experience bar appeared beneath the title.
[1/1000 Merit]
When had that extra point appeared?
If she remembered correctly, it had still been zero the last time she checked.
Pei Ye opened the System Records tab on the left and finally found the source of that point of Merit.
[09:03, Your Dad taught Hospital Vengeful Ghost A a lesson. Merit +1]
Pei Ye: “???”
Vengeful ghost???
“Young people these days really aren’t careful when driving. So what if the sports car is expensive? One crash and it still turns into scrap metal. They even lose their lives with it.”
While waiting at a traffic light, the driver’s muttering attracted Pei Ye’s attention.
She looked out the window and discovered a serious traffic accident at the intersection. The scene was bustling with activity.
Everyone was busy except for a red figure standing motionless nearby, exceptionally conspicuous and eye-catching.
The figure seemed to notice Pei Ye’s gaze as well. Its head twisted a full 180 degrees in an eerie motion, and it grinned at her.
Pei Ye: “...”
Well then, that wasn’t a living person either.
She withdrew her gaze and pretended nothing had happened as she lowered her head to continue studying the game.
A new side quest suddenly appeared on the game interface.
[Side Quest: Player, your dad passes through the Wudaokou intersection and discovers a mysterious red figure beside a traffic accident. You feel that this red figure looks somewhat familiar.]
[Mission One: Determine the identity of the red figure.]
[Mission Two: Determine the relationship between the red figure and the traffic accident.]
[Reward for completion: 50 Merit, 5 Fortune.]
Pei Ye: “...”
She had thought this game only contained those six awful missions.
The six main quests provided almost no hints. They merely said that hugging Lei Yating’s thigh would allow her to complete them easily, while offering no other guidance whatsoever.
The side quest was much friendlier. Both the clues and objectives were very clear.
Pei Ye separated a strand of spiritual thread and wrapped it around the red figure.
A tracking mark first. No matter where the red figure ran, she would be able to find it.
After passing through the intersection and driving a short distance, they arrived at the entrance of Wudaokou Nursing Vocational College.
Xiao Hong’s dormitory was Room 4021 on the fourth floor. There were four bunk beds in the room, and eight students lived in the cramped dormitory.
It was the height of summer. The ceiling fan spun overhead with a whoosh whoosh sound. Only four students were in the dormitory, while the whereabouts of the other three were unknown.
“Xiao Hong, the dorm supervisor did a surprise room inspection last night.”
Pei Ye was still not used to this name and merely sat silently on Xiao Hong’s bed.
The girl who spoke was named Zhou Huirong. She was the oldest resident of Dormitory 4021 and also the dormitory leader.
“Why are you even telling her that? It’s not like this is the first time. She doesn’t care about disciplinary deductions anyway. She doesn’t have any sense of dormitory honor at all.”
Bai Xiaoxiao became angry whenever this topic came up.
She had a competitive personality, but who would have thought she would end up with a delinquent like Xiao Hong.
Because Xiao Hong constantly violated the rules, their dormitory lost a large number of points during evaluations every time, causing Room 4021 to finish at the bottom in every dormitory competition.
Dormitory leader Zhou Huirong felt caught in the middle and said a few words to smooth things over.
She did not like Xiao Hong either. Xiao Hong mixed with street toughs and questionable people all the time. According to some senior students, those shady social types included people involved in compensated dating. If Xiao Hong spent her time with people like that, what kind of decent person could she be? Perhaps she had already sold herself countless times.
Because she lived in the same dormitory, the classmates’ opinions of the other seven girls in their room were not good either.
People always said that birds of a feather flock together. If they stayed around a delinquent troublemaker long enough, they too would end up engaging in compensated dating and selling their bodies.
It was simply too unfair!
