Chapter 10

He Wei suddenly felt fortunate that she had been cautious, so she hadn’t made too much noise just now.

Her hand was still resting on the doorknob, gradually tightening her grip.

The two people outside fell silent, and only wisps of smoke drifted upward.

Cheng Yan slightly lifted his eyes. He Wei was startled and quickly slipped back into the room. After gently closing the door, she shut her eyes and leaned against the door panel.

The heating in the north hadn’t been turned off yet. He Wei was barefoot on the floor. Through the thick wool carpet, combined with the floor heating, the soles of her feet felt faintly warm.

She had heard Yan Huai’s words clearly just now.

He said there was no need to remind him.

So what did that mean?

Men’s thoughts ran deep; He Wei didn’t dare guess.

Moreover, she couldn’t guess even if she tried.

He Wei could only comfort herself that Yan Huai hadn’t developed any feelings for her yet. Leaning against the door, she calmed the heartbeat that had just become chaotic. After several seconds, her heartbeat still hadn’t settled, but she remembered something more important.

She had fainted at Jin Yu yesterday… then what about Yan Chen?

Although Yan Chen had told her to take a taxi home by herself, He Wei had gotten sick. After she got home, Yan Chen couldn’t possibly not ask a single question.

Thinking of this, He Wei couldn’t care less about Yan Huai’s intentions. She quickly walked to the bedside, picked up her coat, and rummaged through it.

Her phone was in the outer pocket; she found it with one search.

When she opened it, Yan Chen had indeed sent messages last night: [Hehe, did you get home?] [Did you take medicine?]

[Hehe, reply when you see this.]

[If you don’t reply, I’ll go to your place.]

After that there was no movement for quite a while. About half an hour later, a few more messages appeared: [Hehe, open the door.]

He Wei: “……”

It was over. It looked like Yan Chen had really gone to her place last night.

Not daring to think too much, He Wei quickly called Yan Chen.

After two “beep” sounds, Yan Chen’s voice came quickly from the other side, “Hehe, where are you now?”

He Wei deliberately coughed twice to make her voice sound hoarser. “I was going to take a taxi back yesterday, but… I don’t know how, I fainted.”

Her voice was soft, sounding full of grievance no matter how one listened.

Yan Chen remembered that he had left He Wei alone at a place like Jin Yu yesterday. He instantly felt guilty and distressed. When he spoke again, his voice was gentle enough to drip water. “Then where are you now? I’ll come pick you up.”

He Wei glanced around the room.

The layout was simple and grand. It was clear that every inch of the room was extremely valuable.

This was indeed Yan Huai’s style.

Fortunately, it wasn’t the room He Wei had lived in in her previous life.

She let out a breath. “I’m at the Third People’s Hospital now.”

The Third People’s Hospital wasn’t far from here, just across one street.

If he went over after finishing the call, it should still be in time.

Only then did Yan Chen let out a sigh of relief. “I’ll head over right away.”

He Wei didn’t refuse. She was sick now, delicate and weak—this was a good opportunity to raise favorability.

She responded softly with a “Okay,” just about to hang up, when the male voice on the other end sounded again, “Hehe, don’t hang up. I’m worried about you.”

Heh.

Last night, when he left his sick girlfriend at the clubhouse, he didn’t seem worried.

He Wei’s lips curved sarcastically, but her tone didn’t reveal any change as she probed indirectly, “What were you doing last night?”

“Just some company matters.”

“Really…”

He Wei’s voice shifted. “It wasn’t some woman asking you out?”

“What are you thinking? It really was company business,” Yan Chen laughed on the other end. “Since you’re so worried about me, how about you follow me every day from now on?”

He Wei snorted lightly.

She soon heard the “beep-beep” of a car unlocking on the other end of the phone, followed by the sound of a door opening.

He Wei didn’t dare waste time. While putting on her clothes, she asked, “Where are you now?”

“I stayed the night at a hotel near your house.”

Yan Chen didn’t miss the chance to show his sincerity. Without waiting for her to ask, he continued, “You didn’t reply to my messages last night, so I got worried and went to your place. No one answered when I knocked. Later, the neighbor said you hadn’t come back.”

“I couldn’t reach you by phone either,” Yan Chen laughed. “Hehe, you know what? If I couldn’t contact you today, I was going to go to the police station and have them look for you.”

His tone sounded quite serious.

It was moving—if He Wei didn’t know his true nature, she might have believed him.

She curved her lips, roughly calculated the time it would take to drive from near her home to the Third People’s Hospital—ten minutes was enough. She didn’t bother washing up, put on her coat, and walked toward the door. “Yan Chen, I’ll eat breakfast on Yuhe Street first.”

Yuhe Street was in the opposite direction of the Third People’s Hospital.

He Wei spoke softly, acting coquettish, “I didn’t eat anything last night…”

As she said this, she happened to open the door.

But before she could step out, she suddenly remembered there were still two men in the living room. Her steps halted. It was too late to retreat—the two had already turned to look at her after hearing the movement.

He Wei moved her lips. “My phone’s about to die, I’ll hang up first.”

Without waiting for Yan Chen’s response, she hung up decisively.

She couldn’t let him hear other men’s voices, otherwise the favorability she had painstakingly pulled back would definitely return to zero overnight.

He Wei nodded to the two of them, then shifted her gaze and fixed it on Cheng Yan alone. “Brother Cheng Yan, I’ll head back first.”

Cheng Yan immediately stood up. “I’ll take you.”

Last night, Yan Huai had directly brought He Wei home and called a family doctor. A lone man and woman—even though one still had a high fever—Cheng Yan still wasn’t at ease.

He was afraid Yan Huai might do something worse than a beast, so he simply stayed here for the night as well.

Anyway, his house had plenty of rooms; he didn’t lack one guest room.

Although He Wei had received an IV and slept soundly for a night, her complexion still couldn’t be considered good.

Pale, and her face seemed half a circle larger than usual.

Though she was still small.

Cheng Yan’s hand had just touched the car keys when He Wei smiled. “No need, I can just take a taxi back.”

“That won’t do. What if you faint again like yesterday?” Cheng Yan kicked the sofa by Yan Huai’s feet. “Right, Ah Huai?”

He Wei’s face heated up.

She had already anticipated what would happen next. Just as she was about to refuse firmly, she heard the man who hadn’t spoken for a long time open his mouth. “Mm.”

He Wei: “……”

She had no chance to choose. Cheng Yan had already grabbed his coat. “Come on, I’ll take you back.”

He Wei quickly glanced at Yan Huai.

He was wearing a white shirt, a neatly tied dark blue tie, cufflinks fastened, and a wristwatch. He looked like he was about to head out.

Sure enough, Cheng Yan asked him, “Aren’t you also going over there to discuss business? I’ll drop you off on the way.”

Yan Huai didn’t refuse.

Last night, He Wei had been restless. When the doctor inserted the needle into the back of her hand, she kept moving, so he had to hold her hand the whole time.

After she fell asleep, even a slightly larger movement might knock the needle out.

Yan Huai stayed by the bed for more than two hours, his nose filled with her faint fragrance.

He hadn’t slept well, but his biological clock had formed, and he woke up early again the next day.

Sleeping late and waking early made him dizzy.

He was too lazy to call the driver, so he stood up directly, took his suit jacket, and while putting it on, followed Cheng Yan toward the door.

He Wei’s gaze followed the two men for a few seconds, then she lifted her foot and followed.

Although she didn’t want to share a car with Yan Huai again, she knew she had no right to refuse. Besides, refusing too many times might arouse suspicion.

The only thing He Wei could do was go with the flow.

The three of them left the door one after another.

The only fortunate thing was that this time Cheng Yan drove, and Yan Huai sat in the passenger seat.

And He Wei occupied the back seat by herself.

Cheng Yan turned his head to look at her. “Going home?”

He Wei shook her head. “To the Third People’s Hospital.”

“Still feeling unwell?”

He Wei continued to shake her head. “I just told Yan Chen I’m at the Third People’s Hospital.”

Cheng Yan caught sight of He Wei lowering her head, the curve at the corner of her lips looking like shy laughter. He raised his eyebrows. “Why didn’t you tell him the truth?”

“I’m afraid he’ll get jealous.”

Cheng Yan: “……”

He turned his head and glanced at Yan Huai.

The man’s brows were slightly furrowed, his lip line somewhat tight. Although his expression couldn’t be called bad,

it definitely wasn’t good either.

Cheng Yan didn’t dare ask further and drove toward the Third People’s Hospital.

The car instantly fell silent, leaving only the faint sounds of the three people’s breathing.

A sharp pain throbbed at Yan Huai’s temple. He raised his hand to press it. When he lowered it again, he glanced at the five fingers of his right hand.

He had held her for two hours for nothing.

He Wei hadn’t looked at him directly even once today.

Yan Huai closed his eyes and leaned back against the seat, lifting his hand to cover his eyes.

Only then did He Wei in the back seat let out a breath of relief. She glanced at her phone and then sent Yan Chen a WeChat message: [Are you almost here?]

The reply came quickly: [Wait five more minutes.]

He Wei didn’t reply again.

Three minutes later, Cheng Yan parked the car at the hospital entrance. He Wei thanked him and got out.

She had timed it well. In less than a minute, Yan Chen’s flashy sports car stopped by the roadside. The door opened, and he strode over. “Why are you outside?”

He Wei lifted her eyelashes and saw that his favorability had risen to seventy-two.

The eight-year war of resistance was about to end.

He Wei coughed, her eyes curving as she smiled at him. “Waiting for you.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Yan Chen stopped in front of her and pulled her into his arms. “Hehe, it was my fault yesterday.”

He Wei sniffed. “It’s okay.”

With a “ding,” the system reminded: “Congratulations, Host, the male lead’s favorability has increased to seventy-five.”

At the same time, in the black Bentley across the street, Cheng Yan silently looked away again.

Yan Huai lit a cigarette. The car window lowered, the inside and outside like two extremes of ice and fire.

He glanced at the two figures embracing, then raised the window. “Let’s go.”

Cheng Yan coughed. “What are you planning to do?”

He could tell Yan Huai had some interest in He Wei, but he wasn’t sure to what extent.

Yan Huai curled his lips.

Someone else’s woman—what could he do?

If he couldn’t get her, then destroy her; that had always been Yan Huai’s style.

But whenever he thought of last night, when He Wei was being pricked with the needle—though her consciousness was unclear, she cried badly.

She seemed very afraid of pain, sobbing like a cat.

He wasn’t quite willing to destroy her.

After all, she was only a woman. Since he couldn’t destroy her, then—

Yan Huai extinguished the cigarette, the corner of his mouth tugging into a cold smile. “Let her go.”
