Chapter 110: Face-Swapping Makeup
Tonight, the wind grew stronger, whistling eerily and carrying from afar a sharp, mournful cry.
The two men walking side by side wore solemn expressions, completely uncertain about what the ghostly entity intended to do.
Yet they had no choice but to move forward, at least to understand its purpose and pave the way for Ji Li to arrive and end everything.
Tongguan thought that Chang Nian was likely in the hands of the ghost now, but since she had been taken rather than killed, she must still have some use and would not die so soon. Otherwise, given his personality, he would have already gone mad by this point.
“Where are we going…”
Yu Guo still hesitated about their current course of action. In truth, they were actively seeking the ghost.
But they carried nothing capable of restraining it, and their survival was not in their hands. If they actually encountered it, how long could they possibly stall?
Tongguan was well aware of this. He had come not only to figure out the ghost’s next move but also to locate Chang Nian and find peace of mind.
As for bringing Yu Guo along, that was simply to have an extra hand.
After hearing Yu Guo’s question, Tongguan handed him the walkie-talkie he had prepared in advance.
“We’ll split up. Our main goal this time is to locate Chang Nian and Tao Xiaoyi. Retreat if things seem dangerous.”
Yu Guo glanced at the walkie-talkie, hesitated, and said nothing further. He had agreed to cooperate for the mission, but he did not want to risk his life for Chang Nian.
After taking the device, Yu Guo chose a different path to search, leaving Tongguan alone.
Watching Yu Guo disappear, Tongguan’s seriousness deepened. He retrieved the radar detector from his pocket.
A glowing dot appeared on the device—that was Chang Nian’s location.
When he had planted the tracker on Xiao Lan, he had also placed one on Chang Nian, which now proved useful.
On the radar screen, he noticed not just one dot but another faint one, emitting a red glow.
An elderly woman, part human, part ghost—human body, ghostly soul—this was likely why the radar could detect her.
Having sent Yu Guo away, Tongguan knew the task ahead would be far more difficult, but this was his personal matter; there was no need to involve anyone else.
Thinking this, he tossed the radar aside, drew his short knife, and sprinted toward that location.
The radar flickered on the ground a few times before the screen abruptly shifted—the glowing dot had moved toward the direction Yu Guo had chosen.
Tongguan, knife in hand, weaved through the dense forest, his heart pounding. Frankly, he had no certainty about this mission.
All means of restraint were under Ji Li’s control. Only when Ji Li arrived would the situation reach its final stage.
Everything Tongguan and the others did merely set the stage for Ji Li’s arrival.
The presence of two unusual female attendants allowed Tongguan, ever perceptive, to roughly guess the ghost’s intentions.
It seemed likely that the current ritual only lacked one or two final female sacrifices.
This explained the ghost’s current behavior. What puzzled Tongguan, however, was why it hadn’t killed them, waiting instead for Ji Li.
Anxious, he quickened his pace, soon reaching the location previously indicated by the radar.
It was a small warehouse-like building, roughly ten square meters from the outside. The old door barely closed, creaking under the wind.
Tongguan stood at the entrance. He could neither see inside nor hear any breathing, yet this was exactly the place he sought.
Whether to enter or not became a pressing question.
His right eyelid twitched. He sensed that this small house was not simple; entering could be life-threatening. Yet if Chang Nian were truly inside, he had no reason to hesitate.
After a brief pause, he chose a cautious approach.
Sheathing his knife, he slowly approached the house and peered through a crack in the door. Seeing only darkness, he refrained from lingering at the entrance.
Instead, he quickly climbed onto the roof.
The thatched roof felt perilously soft beneath his feet, threatening to collapse. Tongguan stepped carefully, testing each spot.
Finding a relatively stable section, he began pulling away the thatch to let moonlight in, trying to get a glimpse of what lay below.
So far, the process went smoothly. He sensed no abnormal forces nearby, which eased him slightly.
As a sliver of moonlight entered, he saw a faint, collapsed figure on the ground.
Still unclear, he could only make out a slender, graceful body—likely a woman.
Just as Tongguan moved to examine her more closely, a sudden weight pulled downward. The entire roof collapsed, dragging him into the warehouse.
He landed atop the fainted woman.
Only then did he see who she truly was. As she slowly regained consciousness, Tongguan had no time to speak.
Suddenly, a streak of red swept across his vision. In front of them, a crimson wedding dress fluttered in the wind, staring from the wall!
Yu Guo remained deeply worried. On one hand, he fretted over when Ji Li might arrive; on the other, he could not see how he could possibly confront the ghost.
Officially, their mission was to disrupt the ghost’s plans, buying Ji Li time to complete his task.
But advancing alone without any knowledge of the situation was far too risky.
Though Yu Guo had a habit of courting danger, he had always been precise in judging limits. He never acted on something uncertain like this. If not for the fact that the final moment was near, he would never have taken this path.
With that, he moved forward cautiously, somewhat distracted. Soon, he came upon a long corridor.
It was the same winding corridor that Chen Fu had led the staff through on their first visit to the mansion.
Here, Yu Guo abruptly stopped. Standing within the corridor was someone.
At first, he couldn’t believe it—or perhaps couldn’t see clearly—so he stepped closer. This time, he saw distinctly.
It was a woman with her back turned. Yu Guo’s heart skipped a beat—he recognized her immediately. It was Chang Nian.
He hadn’t expected to find her while having taken a different path from Tongguan. That meant Tongguan must be facing Tao Xiaoyi on his side.
Yu Guo was about to call out, but something about Chang Nian felt off.
Her long hair, usually tied up and slightly wavy, now cascaded to the ground, many times longer than normal. Her expression had grown increasingly eerie.
Out of nowhere, she had acquired a comb and was carefully brushing her hair with her back to him.
A shiver ran down Yu Guo’s spine. He called softly, “Miss Chang?”
Suddenly, the living voice spoke, and Chang Nian spun around sharply.
Her eyes were blood red, staring at Yu Guo with a deadly intensity. Her face was no longer Chang Nian’s—it had transformed into that of the ghost bride.
Beneath her right eye, a teardrop mole had appeared.
