Chapter 49: Trust and Pursuit

After chatting for a while, it was time to rest. The work shed was crude, and they still had to make space for Fang Yuan to sleep. The brothers tacitly arranged for their brother-in-law to sleep next to Fang Yuan.

It made Lu Chuan very awkward, and his heartbeat sped up a little as well. In truth, he and Fang Yuan were not nearly as intimate as her brothers imagined.

Lu Chuan glanced at Fang Yuan several times and stiffly invited her to get some rest.

Fang Yuan’s expression did not change at all. “Second Brother, Fifth Brother and Fourth Brother should still go take a look around. I don’t feel at ease. That contractor never looked like a good person to me.”

Wuhu was annoyed. “You really know how to use me. We’ve worked all day. Stop making a fuss.”

Fang Yuan kicked Wuhu and made him get up. “You patrol first while I sleep. I’ll take over for you later.”

To reassure Fang Yuan, Lu Chuan immediately stood up. “You all rest. I’ll go patrol. I didn’t do any physical work. I’m not tired.”

All thoughts of shyness disappeared.

Fang Yuan said, “No. Your brain is tired, so you need rest even more. Besides, what use is your little frame?”

She pointed at Lu Chuan, saying he needed to rest his brain properly and earn big money.

Lu Chuan was not pleased at all. What was wrong with his build? Why did Fang Yuan dislike it so much? Was it really that bad?

The brothers all looked at Fang Yuan with conflicted expressions, especially Wuhu. “You’re taking his side instead of ours.”

Fang Yuan said, “A married daughter is water poured out. I’m actually taking the family’s side. Besides, if his brain gets muddled from exhaustion, can you replace him?”

Wuhu pointed at his own nose. “What if I get tired?”

Fang Yuan said, “With your strength, anyone can replace you.”

In other words, Wuhu was replaceable.

Wuhu was so angry that he rolled over, got off the sleeping platform, and left. He could not stay in this place any longer.

Lu Chuan did not dare laugh out loud, and Fang Yuan even ordered him, “Go to sleep properly and take care of your brain.”

Even Fang Sihu no longer wanted to bother with Fang Yuan. So this was where the brother-in-law’s value lay.

Fang Yuan fell asleep almost instantly. She still planned to continue patrolling during the second half of the night. She truly had no other thoughts in her mind.

Fang Second Brother had originally wanted to chat with Lu Chuan about the next day’s work, but he ended up feeling too embarrassed to bring it up.

So the brother-in-law’s brain apparently needed maintenance.

Lu Chuan was tired too. The moment he lay down, he fell asleep.

None of his embarrassment or shyness even had a chance to appear.

Fang Yuan woke up right on time in the middle of the night.

She called Third Brother to go relieve Fang Sihu and Wuhu.

Fang Third Brother did not want to get up. “Why are we making such a fuss in the middle of the night? Only Old Fifth listens to everything you say. Stop messing around and go back to sleep.”

Yet Fang Yuan somehow managed to drag Fang Third Brother up and make him patrol with her.

When Wuhu saw Fang Yuan, he disliked the fact that she was running around causing trouble. “Why are you out here? I’ll handle it. Don’t worry, I won’t fall asleep.”

Fang Yuan said, “Third Brother is here. I had him accompany me. You still have work to do tomorrow. Besides, nobody else knows how to use the mixer. You all go sleep.”

Fang Sihu immediately pulled Wuhu away. “You argue with her all day long, but you never discount a single word she says. I can’t even sneak off to a corner for a nap without you stopping me.”

Wuhu said, “That brat has a point. We brothers can’t let her lose face in front of her husband.”

Fang Sihu snorted.

Everyone knew the two of them were twins.

Wuhu even kicked Lu Chuan awake. “Go keep Fang Yuan company.”

Lu Chuan thought, Even if you hadn’t kicked me, I would’ve woken up anyway.

But he now understood something. This Fifth Brother was on the same level as the eldest brother-in-law. He absolutely could not be offended and had to be treated carefully.

Lu Chuan understood even more clearly now. The older brothers indulged Fang Yuan because she was their only sister, and because of her stubborn personality, they had no choice but to accommodate her.

Fifth Brother was different.

Fifth Brother simply spoiled Fang Yuan.

The difference in closeness immediately became obvious. It was on an entirely different level.

Fang Yuan was not happy at all when she saw Lu Chuan. “Didn’t we say that people who use their brains need proper rest? Why are you here?”

Fang Third Brother felt somewhat annoyed.

So apparently her brothers did not use their brains and did not need rest.

Lu Chuan said, “I’ve slept enough. I couldn’t sleep anymore, so I came out to clear my head.”

Fang Yuan said, “Fine. Just don’t overdo it.”

What could Lu Chuan say?

Only after Fang Yuan approved was he allowed to stand watch together with his wife.

Fortunately, Old Sun genuinely feared the Fang family’s Five Tigers, and no one came to cause trouble.

Otherwise, things would have become much more troublesome.

Only at daybreak did Lu Chuan pull Fang Yuan aside to catch a short nap.

His wife was truly dependable. If you entrusted her with something, you could not possibly feel more at ease.

This was yet another thing Lu Chuan had learned about Fang Yuan.

So this was what someone who stubbornly stuck to principles was like.

In truth, he had been worried too. He feared someone might come at night to sabotage them.

However, he had not wanted to ask his brothers-in-law for help. His original plan had been to wake up several times during the night and keep a close watch himself.

Yet Fang Yuan had already arranged everything.

She said that people like that contractor were narrow-minded.

Lu Chuan had not really believed it.

The next day, even more people came to work.

Fang Eldest Brother had already started worrying that there would not be enough work for so many people.

Lu Chuan said, “More people isn’t a problem. As long as their work is good and they’re capable, that’s enough. The sooner we finish the project, the fewer days of rental fees we’ll have to pay.”

He felt sorry for Fang Yuan.

As long as the project continued, Fang Yuan seemed determined not to go home.

Who could endure that?

Fang Eldest Brother had originally wanted to say that once the project was finished, what would they do afterward?

According to the brothers’ thinking, they should hire fewer people and work more days themselves, so the wages would end up in their own pockets.

But after hearing what his brother-in-law said, he immediately started assigning work.

Finishing earlier really was better.

If they had no work afterward, then so be it.

At least they would no longer have to pay rental fees.

The mixer neither drank water nor ate food, but it certainly consumed money.

The workers who came also told Fang Eldest Brother that it was not that Old Sun had not wanted to send people to cause trouble.

It was simply that everyone had heard this was Fang Eldest Brother’s site, so nobody dared come.

What a joke.

Challenging all five brothers in the middle of the night was practically asking for death.

When real brothers fought, they stood together. The five brothers were completely united.

As for the other side, half of them would run away the moment weapons came out, and the rest were only good at swatting flies. Coming here would just get them beaten.

The Fang family brothers now understood the situation.

At noon, Fang Eldest Brother did not eat at the construction site.

Lu Chuan guessed that Eldest Brother had gone to talk with Old Sun, and things should settle down after tonight.

Unfortunately, no matter how Fang Eldest Brother smoothed things over with Old Sun, Fang Yuan remained unwavering.

Rain or shine, she patrolled exactly as before.

Fang Yuan’s trust was reserved only for herself and Wuhu.

Other than her Fifth Brother, she trusted nobody.

Wuhu had been worked so hard that dark circles had appeared under his eyes.

Eventually, even Fang Dalen could not bear watching it anymore and came to replace his youngest son.

Only then did Fang Yuan finally feel reassured.

According to Fang Yuan, if she did not keep watch herself, then Wuhu would have to do it.

She simply did not trust anyone besides Wuhu because she was afraid others would slack off.

At the time, Wuhu’s face turned so dark it seemed he was one sentence away from saying, “Thanks a lot for your trust.”

That was the bond between those siblings.

In terms of trust, even Lu Chuan could not compare to Wuhu.

The frustration Wuhu suffered was exactly what Lu Chuan aspired to obtain.

What Lu Chuan had not expected was that when a little over half the work had been completed, the managers actually paid out half the money.

Partly it was to give Fang Eldest Brother face.

Partly it was because what Lu Chuan had done was genuinely impressive. The speed and quality of the work were beyond criticism.
