Chapter 50: Hu Li’s Assist
Chapter 50: Hu Li’s Assist
All the black spider threads tightened simultaneously in an instant. The enormous flesh giant let out a series of muffled, piercing shrieks. Irene controlled those pitch-black threads with all her strength, constantly changing their weaving patterns in midair, combining them into pulling ropes that dragged the monster little by little toward the door.
Yu Sheng, meanwhile, desperately braced the door that was wider than any he had opened before, trying to make it a little wider, a little more stable.
The door possessed the characteristic of isolating the environments on either side. Simply opening a door could not directly “release” the harsh environment of the Other Side into this side. If they wanted to burn this monster to death, they had to throw the entire thing through.
Under normal circumstances, this isolation property was of course a good thing. It prevented catastrophic accidents when Yu Sheng accidentally opened a passage to a dangerous place. But at this moment, he truly wished the door could merge the environments on both sides without any protection.
That way, he could simply open the door inside the lava lake, and the magma surging out from the doorway would roast the monster directly. They would not have to go through so much trouble.
But he could only think about it. Even now, he had only just begun to grasp the power of the door. Being able to ensure it opened in the correct location was already difficult enough. Expecting to use it as a flexible offensive technique was simply unrealistic.
As thoughts raced through his mind, the monster had already been dragged before the door. Parts of its limbs had even been forcibly shoved through the opening. Through the doorway, Yu Sheng saw those portions beyond the frame rapidly lose all moisture before being ignited and carbonized by the infernal heat.
For a moment, he even felt as though his own limbs were burning.
The flesh giant’s struggle instantly became almost insane. Even Hunger, acting purely on instinct, sensed immense danger and fear at this moment. All of its limbs trembled violently within the web. Countless openings split across its body, and eyes, mouths, razor-sharp teeth, tentacles, and even mimic structures resembling human facial features and limbs all burst out at once.
Even more piercing shrieks emerged from those twisted, hideous mouths. The roar so close at hand made Yu Sheng’s ears buzz incessantly. A tsunami of noise seemed to crash through his thoughts themselves. Dizzy and disoriented, he nevertheless clung tightly to the handle of the illusory door, watching the giant beast being forced bit by bit into the passage leading to hell.
Then, at that moment, he heard a series of unsettling cracking sounds.
Yu Sheng abruptly looked up toward their source.
What was breaking was not Irene’s threads. This time, the little doll had gone all out and had not dropped a single chain.
What was breaking was the monster’s flesh and twisted limbs.
It was gradually tearing its way free of the web suspended in midair, ripping its own body apart into a bloody mess. It seemed completely incapable of feeling pain. Limbs that were bound too tightly were torn directly off its body. New limbs then grew from the flesh, clinging to nearby rocks and accelerating its escape.
It had almost become a mass of shapeless, flowing flesh, rapidly deforming and rapidly “leaking” through the gaps in the spider threads.
It was adapting to Irene’s web. It was learning a new physiological structure.
“I can’t hold it anymore!” Irene’s scream came from nearby. “My body’s about to give out too! Think of something, Yu Sheng!”
Turning around, Yu Sheng saw dense cracks rapidly spreading across Irene’s arms and cheeks. The doll’s body was slowly falling apart.
“Damn it!”
Unable to stop himself, he cursed under his breath. One hand continued supporting the door while the other reached toward the monster that was about to break free.
But the next second, a rushing wind suddenly sounded beside his ears.
Mixed within the wind was... a wolf’s howl.
A wolf’s howl?
Startled, Yu Sheng looked up and saw shadows suddenly sweep across the night sky. Wolf-like silhouettes formed within the darkness. A wolf pack howled and ran through the air, crashing into the monster one after another, tearing at its flesh and slowing its process of deformation and writhing.
Then Yu Sheng heard a loud shout behind him, deep and powerful.
“I’ll help you!”
The next moment, he saw a figure nearly two metres tall charge over like a violent gale. While still in midair, the man launched a flying kick and slammed into the monster like a massive boulder.
Thud!
The flesh giant’s body uncontrollably “fell” toward the door. Its frantic struggles, writhing, and shrieks could no longer delay the process.
The burly man who had delivered the flying kick leapt through the air, turned, landed gracefully, and looked toward Yu Sheng.
“Good thing I got here in ti...”
He saw Yu Sheng’s face.
The expression on the strong man’s face instantly froze in shock. Astonishment filled his eyes. He looked as though he had just been struck by lightning.
His entire being radiated the tragic aura of someone screwed over by an idiotic boss and transferred from one frontline battlefield straight to another.
Yu Sheng had no idea why the man’s expression became so dramatic after seeing him, nor did he have the spare attention to think about it. He discovered that the flesh giant was struggling once more. Even with half its body already shoved through the doorway and burned into charcoal, the remaining half was still jammed stubbornly against the edge of the door and regenerating at incredible speed.
Through some inexplicable connection, Yu Sheng sensed...
Anger.
And hatred.
Within those trembling eyes, a primitive glimmer of emotion and thought began to appear.
The unnamed strong man also sensed the disturbance beside him. Looking up in alarm, he immediately cried out, “This is bad! This thing can still fight back!”
Then came Irene’s scream.
“It’s snapping!”
The doll’s arms were covered in cracks. The pitch-black threads broke apart inch by inch in the blink of an eye. The web released a series of sharp explosive reports before shattering and vanishing instantly.
The giant beast was free.
Just as Yu Sheng felt all was lost and was about to tell everyone to run, a brilliant burst of blue fire suddenly erupted at the edge of his vision.
Hu Li, who had been hiding behind a nearby ruined wall, had somehow gathered her courage and emerged. She stared viciously at the monster struggling before the door. Her body crouched low like a wild beast. Her silver-white fox tails spread proudly beneath the night sky, and vast amounts of blue spiritual flame blazed fiercely from the tip of every tail.
The demon fox girl let out a low growl from her throat.
Almost simultaneously, black spikes and fragments of bone burst from every part of her body, pinning her to the ground.
Seeing this, Yu Sheng shouted anxiously, “Don’t worry about th...”
But before he could finish, he saw Hu Li, crouched on all fours, forcefully take a step forward, breaking the spike-like restraints. Then she suddenly adjusted her posture.
The foxfire exploded.
A dazzling flash tore through the darkness. A silver-white cone, trailing surging blue flames behind it, shot toward the flesh giant struggling to escape the doorway like a rocket.
Yu Sheng could not even tell what it was before a violent flash erupted from the monster’s back. Although Hu Li had deliberately restricted the explosion’s range, Yu Sheng, standing so close, felt as though the blast nearly shattered his bones. The monster struck directly by the silver-white cone lost its balance on the spot. Already at its limit, the flesh giant staggered twice before finally falling completely through the door.
As the fading shrieks rapidly receded, Yu Sheng abruptly released his control of the door.
The illusory doorway vanished like smoke in an instant.
Silence settled over the ruins of the broken temple. The sudden quietness felt almost unreal.
Irene collapsed directly onto the ground. Her shattered arms could not even be lifted.
A red-clad girl riding on the back of a phantom wolf walked in from outside the ruins. Surprise was written across her face. Beside her stood an ordinary-looking black-haired young man.
The young man spotted Yu Sheng from afar and suddenly froze. It seemed as though he had remembered something. His brow slowly furrowed.
The burly man nearly two metres tall stared wide-eyed at the place where the door had disappeared, apparently lost in shock and contemplation.
Yu Sheng, however, had no time to greet these temporary comrades who had appeared from nowhere. He immediately turned toward Hu Li.
The demon fox girl was struggling to rise from the ground. The foxfire behind her had clearly dimmed considerably, but she was still alive.
Yu Sheng froze.
Then what exactly had flown out just now?
It wasn’t a headbutt?
A moment later, he noticed that one of the tails behind Hu Li was missing.
Yu Sheng: “...”
So what exactly had this girl launched just now?!
And it could be used like that?!
Yu Sheng was beyond shocked. After realizing that the silver-white cone wreathed in blue flames had actually been Hu Li’s tail, his entire mind went blank. The shock even temporarily overwhelmed the excitement of defeating such a powerful enemy.
He did not understand immortal arts or demon techniques, but instinct told him that no matter what kind of immortal art or demon technique it was, “A Nine-Tailed Fox can launch its own tails as missiles” was probably not part of it.
Hu Li, meanwhile, had no idea why her benefactor’s expression had become so wonderfully complicated. Struggling to her feet, she hurried toward him. The wounds where black bone spikes had pierced her body had somehow already vanished completely. Stumbling as she ran, she called out anxiously,
“Benefactor...”
Yu Sheng quickly reached out to support the demon fox girl, who could barely remain standing.
“Rest for a bit first...”
But Hu Li urgently interrupted him.
“There’s no time to rest, Benefactor. It’s not over yet!”
Yu Sheng immediately froze.
