Chapter 140: A Divine Soldier Descends from Heaven
Cheng Qianfan’s Mauser pistol was tucked into his waistband.
In his hand, he held a dagger.
One step.
Two steps!
Three steps!
Just as he was about to reach the secret agent, the shadow on the ground finally caught the man’s attention.
Guo Qing instinctively turned his head to look while simultaneously raising the Mauser pistol in his right hand.
Cheng Qianfan pounced like lightning.
One hand clamped over the man’s mouth while the dagger plunged directly into his neck and twisted in a circle, instantly destroying his windpipe and vocal cords.
Blood immediately gushed out.
The pistol in Guo Qing’s hand dropped.
Cheng Qianfan reacted with extraordinary speed.
Without the slightest hesitation, he directly kicked Ah Hai, who was lying on the ground.
Ah Hai immediately let out another scream of agony.
The scream covered up the sound of the Mauser pistol falling to the ground from the secret agent’s hand.
Cheng Qianfan gently lowered the man onto the ground.
The agent desperately clutched his neck with both hands, able to make only muffled choking sounds from his mouth.
Cheng Qianfan bent down, picked up the pistol that had fallen to the ground, and smashed it directly into the man’s head.
Like a ripe watermelon being shattered, the man immediately stopped moving.
Then he skillfully searched the body.
He found a spare magazine.
To his surprise and delight, he also found a Japanese Type 97 grenade.
Only then did he crouch down and help Ah Hai up.
In a hoarse voice, he said, “Comrade, I’m here to rescue you. Don’t speak.”
Ah Hai opened his eyes and saw a strange man with black cloth covering his face.
Enduring the pain, he gritted his teeth and nodded.
Cheng Qianfan hoisted Ah Hai onto his back, jogged a few steps, and placed him in the rickshaw.
Pulling the rickshaw, he circled around through the alley on the left side of the house.
As for the terrain here, Cheng Qianfan knew it as well as if he could navigate it with his eyes closed.
A right turn through this alley led directly to Apricot Blossom Alley outside the courtyard wall where Wang Jun lived.
Just as he approached Apricot Blossom Alley, he heard voices coming from inside.
“Brothers of the Communist Party, as the saying goes, a wise man submits to circumstances. Lay down your guns, and I guarantee your lives will be spared.”
He quietly pulled the rickshaw back and parked it at the corner of the alley.
“Don’t make a sound. I’m going to rescue them.”
As he spoke, he handed Ah Hai the pistol seized from the secret agent.
Ah Hai shook his head and looked at the dagger in Cheng Qianfan’s hand.
“I’ve never used a gun.” Ah Hai endured the pain and spoke in a low voice through gritted teeth. “The gun is more useful in your hands. Give me that instead.”
Cheng Qianfan took a deep look at this comrade whose name he did not even know.
He understood exactly why the man wanted the dagger.
Without hesitation, Cheng Qianfan shoved the dagger into Ah Hai’s hand.
“I’ll come back for you and get you out of here. Remember, unless it’s absolutely necessary...”
Ah Hai gripped the dagger tightly in his right hand.
He pulled a bloodstained note from his clothing.
A smile appeared on his face.
“Comrade, don’t worry about me. Take care of her for me.”
Cheng Qianfan felt his nose sting.
He immediately stuffed the note into his pocket, grabbed both pistols, turned around, and left.
Cheng Qianfan cautiously leaned out to observe.
There were three men in the middle of the alley.
He could vaguely make out that they were Wang Jun, Kang Erniu, and the young guard comrade.
All three were armed and making their final stand.
There were eleven secret agents in total.
Three stood at the head of the alley, blocking their escape route.
Eight were at the rear of the alley.
Cheng Qianfan tucked the captured Mauser pistol into his waistband, raised his own pistol, aimed at the secret agent nearest to him, and pulled the trigger.
Bang!
The gunshot rang out.
The bullet struck the back of the man’s head, killing him instantly.
At the same time, before the other two agents could react, Cheng Qianfan crouched low and rapidly closed the distance.
Bang!
Another shot.
Again, it struck the back of a man’s head.
Immediately afterward, he lunged forward, rolled, and rushed up beside the remaining agent.
With one elbow strike, he stunned the man who was trying to turn around.
Pressing the muzzle against the man’s forehead, he fired.
Bang!
The man’s head exploded.
This entire sequence of shooting and ambush happened in the blink of an eye.
To the agents on the opposite side, it looked as though a shadow had rushed forward.
Three gunshots rang out, and three of their comrades were dead.
“Watch out!”
“Another Communist has arrived!”
“Fire!”
The agents fired back in panic and confusion.
Wang Jun and the other two, trapped in the middle, were stunned by the sudden turn of events.
They wanted to use the opportunity to escape.
But bullets flew overhead and past their sides, and for the moment they dared not move.
Cheng Qianfan rolled across the ground.
Two bullets struck the spot where he had been moments earlier.
Clods of dirt thrown up by the impacts hit his body.
He pulled out the German M24 grenade he had brought with him, pulled the cord, and hurled it.
“Watch out!”
“Grenade!”
“Damn your mother!”
The agents scrambled frantically for cover.
Then came a tremendous explosion.
Boom!
The area was instantly engulfed in smoke and dust.
“Run!” Cheng Qianfan growled in a low voice.
Wang Jun and the others were astonished.
Who was this comrade?
How could he be so fierce?
Nevertheless, their feet moved swiftly.
Crouching low, they charged toward him with all their remaining strength.
Covering roughly twenty metres (~66 feet), the three men sprinted desperately toward him.
“Comrade, you are...” Wang Jun asked in delighted surprise.
“Comrade Wang Jun, there’s another comrade in the rickshaw in the alley to the left. I’ll provide cover. You get out of here now.”
Cheng Qianfan had no time for explanations.
He directly spoke Wang Jun’s name.
This was the most direct way to gain the man’s trust.
Originally, he had intended to take intelligence documents from his left pocket.
At the last moment, he changed his mind.
Instead, he reached into his right pocket, took out another folded sheet of paper, and stuffed it into Wang Jun’s hand.
Wang Jun gripped the “intelligence.”
He was astonished.
He did not know this man, yet the man had immediately spoken his name.
The most likely explanation was that this was a comrade within the Municipal Committee whom he had never met.
Yet if the Municipal Committee needed to send intelligence to him, they would only use comrades he already knew.
That was organizational discipline.
The matter left him puzzled.
“Take care.”
Looking at the comrade dressed in black with his face covered by black cloth, Wang Jun gritted his teeth and immediately led Kang Erniu and Dazhuang away.
Although countless questions filled his mind, Wang Jun knew every second was precious.
He had to make good use of the time this comrade had bought for them.
Seeing Wang Jun leave without wasting words, Cheng Qianfan secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
As expected of an experienced veteran comrade.
He had genuinely been worried that the man might hesitate and fail to grasp the situation.
Ding Naifei patted the dust from his head and looked at his subordinates.
That single grenade had already cost them three men.
Two lay on the ground, their fate uncertain.
Another lay there screaming in agony.
Even Ding Naifei himself had suffered a shoulder wound from grenade fragments.
Hatred filled his heart.
What should have been a perfect opportunity to wipe out important Communist figures in one stroke had been ruined by this suddenly appearing Communist gunman.
He absolutely could not let them escape!
“After them!”
“Damn your mother!”
Ding Naifei shouted furiously, waving his Mauser pistol.
Bang!
Bang!
Cheng Qianfan fired two shots in succession.
A secret agent who had just managed to get back on his feet was hit and collapsed with a scream.
The four remaining men, including Ding Naifei, immediately threw themselves to the ground and returned fire.
Cheng Qianfan drew the captured Mauser pistol from his waistband.
A pistol in each hand, he unleashed a storm of fire at the enemy.
Dual-wielding pistols naturally reduced accuracy compared to firing a single weapon.
But accuracy was not what he sought at this moment.
He wanted firepower.
The firepower of two Mauser pistols was comparable to that of a light machine gun.
For a time, the secret agents on the opposite side were forced to dodge and scatter, only occasionally firing back wildly.
Click. Click.
“He’s out of ammunition!”
Ding Naifei was overjoyed.
“Charge! Take him alive!”
