Chapter 146: Team Rocket’s Intel
“Because they were originally one,” Natsume said, slightly surprised.
He remembered that Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem were originally a single entity.
“Then why did they split?” Giovanni asked.
“You can refer to yesterday’s Mewtwo,” Giovanni reminded him.
Yesterday’s Mewtwo?
Natsume paused.
Mewtwo was artificial; the genetic powers should have been with Mew.
But halfway through the battle, the opponent managed to take half of Mew’s powers.
Thinking it over, Natsume realized that under Giovanni’s intervention, the authority of the genes in the opponent would surpass Mew.
Taking half the powers didn’t seem difficult. Powers could be divided, and it depended on authority.
“You mean at the end of the age of war, as war gradually declined and the authority of war almost vanished, it split into ideals and truth?”
Natsume finally understood.
The end of the age of war, with humanity continually advancing along the technology tree and developing production, naturally led to unification.
“The final heroes only put a period to that era; they were not an absolute factor,” Giovanni’s voice floated calmly.
“Because before that, war was already dead, splitting into ideals and truth.”
Natsume nodded in agreement.
But Giovanni seemed unaware that, besides the twin dragons, a shell formed Kyurem.
Kyurem could only fuse separately with Reshiram or Zekrom, never all three at once.
A major reason might be that the world is now peaceful; war has long ceased to exist.
“So, guess who inherits the powers inside the legendary Pokémon after they die?” Giovanni raised the topic.
“The strongest in the group?” Natsume recalled some records from the League.
“Yes, the strongest in the group,” Giovanni said, smiling silently.
Natsume was struck. He suddenly understood why Giovanni used Mewtwo in gym battles.
There was only one Mew, but by creating Mewtwo, Giovanni gave it a kin.
He was increasing Mewtwo’s battle experience and leveling it up.
Divine Authority alone wasn’t enough; it needed strength.
Perhaps the day it faced him, Mewtwo had just leveled enough to rival Mew, allowing it to take half of Mew’s powers.
“You want to use this method to extract powers in bulk?” Natsume was shocked.
He remembered that there were quite a few Pokémon like Mew, solitary holders of powers.
“I have no interest in such things,” Giovanni said unexpectedly, showing little enthusiasm, as if the legendary Pokémon didn’t matter.
Natsume narrowed his eyes, unsure whether Giovanni was suppressing his ambitions.
If so, his acting was flawless.
“In the new era, humanity’s influence in the world keeps rising, and countless new things emerge,” Giovanni said, lifting the glass of red wine, speaking vaguely.
Seeing that Natsume remained unmoved, he smiled.
“See, the disappearance of authority leads to the splitting or vanishing of corresponding powers,” Giovanni said, then fell silent.
“Oh, so you think that large-scale emergence of new things will create new authority and generate new powers?” Natsume thought quickly, immediately making the connection and thinking of Midchu.
Sleeping.
Such a simple act, yet every person and Pokémon does it.
But no legendary Pokémon matched it.
Before this, perhaps only Darkrai and Cresselia, related to dreams, were remotely connected.
Natsume suddenly realized that Midchu being able to absorb the Divine Authority and create his own Divine Authority wasn’t just luck
It was inevitable. This world possessed the authority of sleep, but no legendary Pokémon corresponded to it.
“I’ve thought about many things,” Giovanni’s voice floated softly.
“Humanity has developed for so many years, and the technological explosion of the past few centuries far surpasses the total of the previous tens of thousands of years.”
“Too many new things are emerging—battles, technology, machines.”
“I believe these widespread things, like lightning, oceans, earth, and storms in nature, will inevitably generate authority.”
As he spoke, Giovanni’s gaze fixed on Natsume.
“So can you tell me, is that thing in you about battling a form of Divine Authority?”
Natsume didn’t answer, only looked at Giovanni curiously.
This Giovanni felt different from the one in the original story.
Why did he have such a strong desire to investigate?
At a time like this, shouldn’t he be thinking about how to use these discovered rules to dominate the world?
Just the method Natsume had thought of earlier—using these rules to divide powers in bulk—if Team Rocket kept a low profile and quietly amassed wealth, they might actually rule the world.
In all Pokémon parallel universes, this world’s technology was among the most advanced, so perhaps everyone here had some researcher traits?
Seeing the researcher visibly zoning out, Giovanni’s face darkened.
“Forget it. Even if you don’t want to say, I’ve already verified it.”
Giovanni leaned back in the recliner, gazing at the sky.
Natsume casually grabbed a piece of watermelon from Midchu and tossed it in his mouth.
He felt this Giovanni was a bit philosophical, not quite fitting the image of the original Team Rocket boss.
Squinting, Natsume probed again with his telekinesis.
He suspected that the real Giovanni had been taken out by Mewtwo, and the one in front of him was Mewtwo in disguise.
There was no other explanation—this Giovanni was too much like Mewtwo, with something Natsume couldn’t describe.
“You seem like you’d get along with Mewtwo very well,” Natsume suddenly said.
“Hah, I don’t think so,” Giovanni replied.
There was no trace of arrogance from a legendary Pokémon trainer in his tone, only slight disdain.
“Can I see your Pokémon?”
Natsume’s gaze slid down, fixed on Giovanni’s waist.
The system-marked red dot kept flashing.
He hadn’t forgotten that Giovanni still had a Pokémon with complete powers.
“No,” Giovanni said flatly.
“Fine, then. Goodbye.”
Natsume stood to leave but was pressed back into his seat by Giovanni.
“Now it’s your turn to fulfill my request.”
The meaning was clear: exchange information for conditions.
“Alright, go ahead. Just don’t go below my moral standards.”
Natsume recalled all his Pokémon and looked at Giovanni.
Giovanni handed him a USB drive.
“My research team tracked Mew’s location the moment Mewtwo obtained powers, but…”
“The opponent seemed to be moving at high speed. By the time my people arrived, it was gone.”
“I need you to help me find Mew.”
“I knew it!” Natsume snapped back to reality.
“And then clone a hundred Mewtwos from Mew! That way we can obtain ninety-nine percent of the authority!”
“Finally, catch the other single-power Pokémon, infinitely boosting Team Rocket’s strength, and then Team Rocket will rule the world—mwahaha!”
Natsume speculated logically.
Giovanni remained silent.
Where did this researcher get his stereotypical ideas about him? They didn’t even know each other before.
“Jessie’s mother hasn’t been found yet. It’s also my mother’s wish. Mew might know something,” Giovanni said.
His words left Natsume frozen, staring incredulously at him.
With his telekinesis, Natsume could accurately sense the other’s emotions—Giovanni hadn’t been lying.
Could it be true?
If this were acting, then this Giovanni was terrifying.
“Alright, then how did you know I could reach Mew?” Natsume asked, puzzled.
“Although the probability is very low, you might be human,” Giovanni replied.
“?”
Natsume froze. How was Giovanni suddenly rating him on the same level as Professor Oak?
With so many humans, it’s impossible that the corresponding Divine Authority doesn’t exist. Giovanni felt that this Divine Authority had also settled on Natsume.
But even thinking that didn’t make complete sense.
In a world where humans and Pokémon coexist harmoniously and build bonds, humans should be proactive, passionate, and always moving forward.
Yet on Natsume, there was not a trace of that.
Oh well, he would just take it as a gamble.
After all, this information about powers would, in a few months, be used as Team Rocket’s bargaining chip when joining the Galar Dynamax Project and handed to the League.
Hopefully, before this researcher fully realized, he could bring news of Mew.
