Chapter 7
Chapter 7: Medical School 1
The Medical School building at Golden University is grand and square, sandwiched between the Department of Biological Engineering and the Department of Atmospheric Sciences. Passersby would undoubtedly first notice the Medical School, then immediately raise a soul-searching question:
"Eh? Does Golden University have this school?"
Today is the third day after the formation was removed. Medical student Chen Hongmei had been plagued by ghosts pressing on her bed during the night for the past few days. She was tired, with dark circles under her eyes. When called downstairs, her whole aura was as dark as night.
What is this? Can't even get a proper rest at night and still have to host guests during the day.
This is really too much.
Coming toward her were five or six students from the Spirit Institute, all smiling cheerfully while holding their student IDs, waiting for the leadership review.
A third-year student from the Information Department, Chao Tianque, greeted her warmly: "Senior Chen Hongmei, hello! We are from the Spirit Institute. We've reported to Professor Zhao, and we're here to look into the abnormalities in the Medical School these past few days and find a solution."
"We'll need your cooperation for our exam content."
The three team members behind Chao Tianque all smiled with eight teeth showing. Ming Yue saw this and quickly pulled Bai Linlang to join in the silly grin.
Chen Hongmei: "......"
These two younger sisters' silly grins are truly exceptional, thought Chen Hongmei. Checking the documents signed by the instructor, she casually said, "Your Spirit Institute exams are quite unique, having third-year and first-year students take exams together."
Chao Tianque glanced at the two shameless younger sisters—these two little brats had blocked the door late last night, insisting on teaming up to take the practical exam: "Sorry, our college's final exam content underwent some changes, and it's not really suitable to set up a designated place for the practical exam..." He raised his eyes to look at the tall Medical School building ahead. A thick, black mist enveloped the building. Chao Tianque's tone remained calm as he continued:
"—So since we’re out here working, we have to make sure the bigger groups protect the smaller ones, seniors leading the juniors."
Otherwise, third-year and fourth-year students would form teams to guard different schools, second-year students would be left to pick up the scraps, and the poor first-year students wouldn’t even have a chance to take the practical exam.
Chen Hongmei stifled a yawn, her face tired, a thin layer of gray mist surrounding her. She handed Chao Tianque a few sheets of paper and a key: "Fine, fine, do as you please. The key to the living specimen lab is this one—if you really need to report it, I think it’s just a case of the overnight rabbit dog running away, causing the strange noises in the middle of the night. The lab instructions are on the paper. I’m in the anatomy room, just call me if needed."
Chao Tianque smiled politely: "Thanks for your trouble, Senior Hongmei. We’ll treat you to a meal later." After finishing his words, he casually patted Chen Hongmei’s shoulder.
There are three lamps in life: one on top of the head and one on each shoulder. If they go out, one encounters evil spirits.
—On Chen Hongmei's shoulder, a clump of black yin energy curled, wriggling like maggots. It extinguished the 'lamp' on her shoulder, and at that moment, Chao Tianque’s slap crushed the energy, and the lamp reignited.
Warmth surged into her shoulder, following the boy's hand like a fiery ball, immediately jolting her awake. The warmth spread, melting away the heavy melancholy that had been weighing on her heart and brows for the past few days. Suddenly, she felt as though she were surrounded by mountains and rivers, breathing in fresh air, feeling mentally and physically rejuvenated.Chen Hongmei: "......"
Chen Hongmei gave Chao Tianque's team a strange, long look, then suddenly said: "Your Spirit Institute is really something."
"Thank you for your help, Junior." I won’t hold it against you for touching my shoulder without permission.
"You're welcome, Senior."
Chao Tianque and his team smiled politely as they saw Chen Hongmei off. As soon as she was out of sight, everyone quickly opened their bags and pulled out their tools.
"Junior, here." Third-year student Tan Lu threw something, the angle sharp. Ming Yue jumped up and caught it mid-air, tossing one to Bai Linlang. Bai Linlang, flustered, caught it but was immediately bitten by it. Fresh blood began to spill out.
The Yang Qi Gun. Ming Yue fiddled with the item in her hand, her own blood being absorbed into the gun's handle. A flash of golden light appeared.
Tan Lu dug something out of her backpack, not even looking up as she explained: "This is the Yang Qi Gun. It doesn’t recognize a master, but after absorbing a bit of blood, it can resist Yin energy based on the owner’s Yang Qi limit—there’s theoretically no upper limit, making it convenient for capturing or strangling."
The two first-year students quickly expressed their thanks. Chao Tianque handed them each a talisman pouch, his tone serious: "Last night, you asked to team up, said a lot of things—whether true or false, I’m not going to dwell on that. But you need to understand, after the formation is removed, the inner and outer ghosts that have been suppressed in every school for years will emerge. Even the living with malicious intent outside could be used."
"One wave after another, whether dangerous or not, you can guess."
"The Medical School I'm responsible for is not a peaceful place."
With that, he opened his talisman pouch and showed the various talismans inside to Ming Yue and Bai Linlang:
"The Medical School specializes in the study of life and death, the most Yang and the most Yin."
"I hope the two of you won’t try to be brave. The final exam is important, but it's about gaining experience. Do you understand?"
The two nodded vigorously.
Chao Tianque looked at the two of them, especially Ming Yue, whose Yin-Yang eyes were clear and bright, her Yang Qi strong. Perhaps she had never encountered so much blood and the chaos of Yin and Yang. He couldn’t help but feel a bit of sympathy. He gently patted her head, full of compassion:
"Don’t listen too much to the stories that ghosts tell. When it’s time to kill, kill. Pitying them will only shorten your own life."
Bai Linlang: "......"Bai Shizhang seriously wondered if Senior Chao had not fully understood the essence of Ming Yue’s “Two Kicks.”
She didn’t understand, so she asked: "Senior Chao, shouldn't ghost-slaying masters primarily focus on guiding spirits to the afterlife? Where does the killing come in?"
Chao Tianque: "......"
I have nothing to say.
A senior from the comprehensive department laughed loudly: "You first-years are really something. I helped Li Xianzhou grade the papers, and hardly anyone got the ghost-slaying master’s definition right. Hahaha."
Bai Linlang: "......"
Bai Linlang was confused. She had carefully memorized the ancient texts of the Bai family, and they clearly said it this way!
Chao Tianque clapped his hands: "Alright, everyone, let’s go inside. For those who want an explanation, we can talk about it more once we get to the Medical School."
Senior Tan Lu took off her sunglasses, revealing her Yin-Yang eyes, and smiled: "What the team leader said is right. It’s always better to explain on-site than just talking."
Chao Tianque led the way, and the four third-year students split into two groups: one for the Comprehensive Department and Information Department, and the other for the Comprehensive Department and Equipment Department. They each took one first-year student with them. One group entered through the side entrance, while the other entered through the front. The two groups agreed to meet on the far eastern side of the first floor before starting their search.
Chao Tianque, Tan Lu, and Ming Yue formed the second group and entered through the main entrance of the Medical School, which was surrounded by swirling gray fog.
As soon as they entered, the cold air hit them.
The hall was spacious, with stone plaques hanging on all four walls. Some were engraved with the names of current professors, while others listed the Medical School’s honors over the years. The space was ancient and solemn. In the center stood a stone tablet and a mirror. The mirror was askew, while the stone tablet stood upright, engraved with the Hippocratic Oath and the Chinese Medical Student Oath. Ming Yue quickly read them and silently recited them in her mind, then called to the senior who was scanning the hall’s cement walls with her Yin-Yang eyes:
"Senior Tan Lu, come look at the Medical School's own exorcism incantation."
"Ah, indeed," Tan Lu pulled out a "stilling" talisman, spat on it, and stuck it to the entrance’s carpet. Half of the "safe entry and exit" inscription was now gone, so anyone entering or leaving the Medical Building would have to step on the talisman, which helped reduce Yin energy by grounding Yang energy. She walked over to the stone tablet and murmured:
"Health is at stake, life entrusted..."
"......I vow to do everything in my power to eliminate human suffering, to help perfect health, and to maintain the sanctity and honor of the medical profession—wow, this sounds even more exorcism-like than Marxist philosophy."
Chao Tianque softly scolded, "Stop spouting nonsense. This is the Holy Temple of Medicine, where countless alumni have rested. Show some respect." He pulled out a "stilling" talisman from his pouch and attached it to the Yang Qi Gun, shooting it in a precise manner. The eight corners of the hall were soon covered with talismans, their cinnabar red light flickering. The air suddenly cleared, though it grew even colder.Tan Lu made a zipper motion with her mouth, pointed to the left path, nodded to Chao Tianque, waved to Ming Yue, and led the way down the left path. "Let's go, junior."
Ming Yue stared at the stone tablet with the oath engraved on it, running two fingers over it. Then she looked around the hall, feeling an indescribable sense of oddness.
The stone plaques on the four walls seemed to be missing something, and... Ming Yue looked at the mirror next to the oath tablet, grabbed it, and pulled it to the center, straightening it.
—The custom of the Medical School was that a mirror, the size of a person, should be placed in the center of the hall. It symbolized the protection of the academy, warding off evil spirits and reflecting any malevolent presence outside to protect the purity of the building.
With a creaking sound.
The moment the mirror was straightened, light radiated from it. The overlapping gray mist in the hall was swept away by a blast of air, revealing Ming Yue’s reflection in the mirror, looking grotesquely distorted, not like a real person.
A faint, low voice echoed in the hall, muttering intimately:
"Ugly, so ugly..."
"...Are all the Lingyuan students this ugly?"
"Why are they so ugly?"
"Yeah, why are they so ugly..."
Ming Yue: "...... Fuck off."
She spun around in a 360-degree turn, but saw no one in sight.
Weird, which ghost is so annoying?
Ming Yue adjusted her illusory red scarf and thought to herself that her habit of helping others was shinier than gold. She then boldly ran toward the left path.
Once her footsteps faded down the corridor, the gray mist in the mirror swirled again, thickening like a black tree, gathering into human forms—
One by one, then groups of two, they crowded around the mirror, whispering intimately, before heading down the left corridor in pursuit.
The “stilling” talisman at the corner of the room, its cinnabar markings soaked with Yin energy, trembled in the wind, its burden too great to bear. With a tearing sound, it fell to the ground and slowly dissolved into a pool of blood. The corridors inside the building were wide and spacious, the floor structure rectangular, with low-wattage white lights hanging from the ceiling, casting a dim glow. At first glance, the long, eerie corridor resembled a death alley filled with countless zombies, straight out of a Resident Evil scene.
The door to the vivisection laboratory was tightly shut. The second group moved stealthily, like geckos on the wall. Ming Yue, with her sharp senses, listened closely. Inside the walls, she could hear a faint "whoosh, whoosh" sound intermittently. Ming Yue furrowed her brow, took out her Yang energy weapon, and approached the door. On the door was a schedule for the laboratory:
What’s this? #Drug lethal dose testing#.
What’s this? #Observing brain rigidity#.
Ming Yue: "......"
Tan Lu also leaned in to look at the schedule. After a moment, she rubbed her arms and said, "Holy hell, I recognize all these words, but when they're put together, it sounds so creepy."
Chao Tianque teased, "You’re a backup for the ghost-slayer squad, and you're still afraid of a medical monk?"
Ming Yue touched her talisman pouch. She was annoyed; the senior had only given her low-grade talismans. After rummaging through it for a while, she finally pulled out an energy-storing talisman. She pressed the yellow paper to her lips, took a deep breath from her chest, and then blew with all her might:
"Poof—"
"Poof, poof, poof—"
The farting sound was crisp and resonant.
Chao Tianque, Tan Lu: "......"
"Junior, what are you doing?"
After blowing out the air, the talisman automatically transformed, revealing the character "Yang" on it. She stuck the talisman on the vivisection lab door: "I’m storing Yang energy. That way, if any evil spirit bursts out of the lab later and steps on the talisman, the Yang energy will explode. It’s sure to work."
"Piapiapia, like firecrackers."
The two third-year students: "......"
The two third-year students stared at Ming Yue with incredulous expressions.
What kind of brain does this junior have? How is she so unrefined and ungraceful?
Others' thought processes are like wormholes; hers is more like a donkey cart.Chao Tianque, however, did not intend to stop the young people's useful attempts. "We're about to enter, but now, let's review the live report from the medical school."
Tan Lu and Ming Yue spoke in unison, like a two-person performance, each supplementing the other:
"The night after the institute’s formation was removed, the medical school started to experience hauntings—"
"—The vivisection laboratory started making strange noises, equipment was overturned, and the surveillance showed black winds darting around inside—"
"Surveillance at the anatomy room door caught figures sitting up and lying down through the window, scaring the old master who had gone to the bathroom in the middle of the night—"
"—The drug experiments of the past three days also had an abnormally high failure rate, many rats died from the drugs—though Tianque, I think this should be the medical school’s own fault, and they’ve passed the blame onto our Spirit Institute."
"The dean of the medical school and our Dean Liu Guanshan are on good terms. Suspecting the medical school was haunted, they urgently called us to clean up the mess and take care of the aftermath. That's all."
Chao Tianque: "......"
Chao Tianque chuckled: "Looks like there are many more messes our institute needs to clean up."
The three of them made their plan. Tan Lu kicked open the door, Chao Tianque provided side-covering while sticking a thunder talisman, and Ming Yue was in charge of finishing off the task.
Ming Yue, who had been assigned the finishing blow, was a little confused—what exactly was meant by this? Were they supposed to kill ghosts?
So, Ming Yue rummaged through her backpack, finally pulling out a triangular ruler. She looked at the sharp end, cut a small slice on her palm, and then wiped the wound along the edge of the ruler, pressing hard!
The blood immediately stained the edge of the ruler.
Chao Tianque didn’t notice her actions and gestured with his finger, signaling Tan Lu to open the door (Tan Lu: Why am I the one opening the door, being weak and delicate?). Tan Lu nodded and used the key to open the door.
With a creak, the door opened, revealing a pitch-black interior, quiet and still.
The three of them exchanged glances.
Ming Yue moved like a flash, kicked the door with one swift motion.
Bang! The laboratory immediately erupted in chaos!
The change happened in an instant. A whooshing sound echoed, and a gray wind that seemed to cling to the ground rushed in wildly. The dense yin energy surged toward them, suffocating and thick. The strong black smoke started flowing out from the door. Tan Lu, being the first, was hit directly, staggering to the side and vomiting with a loud "wah!"
Chao Tianque, who had somehow pulled a knife from somewhere, shouted, "Be careful, here they come!"
Ming Yue quickly nodded and gripped her triangular ruler!
Just as the words were spoken, the action was fast!
The gray wind slammed into the door like a thunderstrike. The storage talisman on the floor by the door suddenly burst out with an overwhelming surge of yang energy. The clash between yin and yang caused an energy conflict, resulting in an explosion—
Boom! A series of deafening sounds rang out, like firecrackers exploding, with golden sparks and lightning, followed by smoke.
As the smoke cleared, there was no trace of the yin energy or gray wind. Only a storage talisman, half-burned, remained, and the evil spirits had already been blown to ashes.
Chao Tianque: "......"
Damn!
This was a storage talisman!?
Wasn't this really a high-level lightning talisman?
Whose yang energy was this strong?
Could Ming Yue be a pure virgin boy?
Bullshit, even a virgin's urine wouldn't be this powerful!
Ming Yue, seeing the horrified look on her senior's face, remembered that she had breathed into the storage talisman earlier, thinking it might give off some strange smell. She quickly straightened her face and blew out her breath into her palm, sniffed it, and nodded in satisfaction:
"Don’t worry, Senior, I had gum this morning."
"Jasmine flavor."
Chao Tianque: "......"I often seem out of place with my juniors because I'm not perverted enough.
#This junior is toxic#
#Why are there so many flashy moves?#
The inside of the door remained pitch black, but half of the storage talisman was still intact, and there were no evil spirits daring to come out. The three of them entered and turned on the lights. The floor was covered with rolling black wind, with yin energy overflowing, and the smell of blood in the air. Ming Yue poked at the gray clumps on the ground with her triangular ruler, thinking that her expression might have cracked a little—
Yin-yang eyes aren't healed for nothing.
She looked up, and sure enough, her seniors also had the expression of wanting to 'perform the five-speed electric fan on-site.'
Tan Lu bared her teeth and said, "What is all this? What kind of evil spirits are in this lab?!"
Chao Tianque inhaled, "……Rabbits."
Ming Yue sneered, "There might also be rats."
