Chapter 14
Chapter 14
“Meow, meowoo.”
Only a few months old, Dian Dian and Da Hui walked side by side in front, their meows trembling, but still comforting big brother.
Seeing this, Bai Li felt a warm feeling in his heart.
He ran a few steps ahead and placed Dian Dian and Da Hui carefully behind him again.
“You two are still young; you don’t need to shield big brother.”
As he spoke, Bai Li led them, cautiously taking a detour. The few stray dogs howling not far off sounded fierce; better to avoid them if possible.
After searching the whole night, Dian Dian and Da Hui had lost their voices. Bai Li could barely still meow, but his once slightly childish meows had become very hoarse.
“What should we do?”
Looking at the sun already hanging in the sky, they still hadn’t found Mei Mei.
Dian Dian was terrified: “Did bad people take Mei Mei away?”
Bai Li felt anxious too, but since his little brothers were panicking, he couldn’t afford to panic with them.
“Let me think.”
Bai Li squatted seriously on a flower bed, his little round face tense as he thought about how to find Mei Mei.
“Got it!”
A flash of inspiration struck him—when he first came here, the old cats told him every area had a boss who controlled all the cats and dogs.
If he could find the boss of this area, he could learn what happened to Mei Mei from the stray cats and dogs.
No time wasted.
Bai Li took Dian Dian and Da Hui back under the bridge, took out a hundred yuan from his secretly saved money, then bought three pounds of cat food, some nutritional paste, and pet probiotics for another hundred yuan.
All the items were purchased from Dr. Qiu He, who packed them up and hung them around Bai Li.
“Dian Dian, Da Hui, don’t follow me.”
Bai Li placed them in a cardboard box, not letting them out.
These two little ones were still growing, and after staying up all night, they needed to rest today.
“I’m going to find the boss of this area; he must have a way to bring Mei Mei back.”
With the eyes of his two little brothers watching him off, Bai Li took the supplies for the boss and ran off with quick steps.Outside in the grass and in the corners of the walls, stray cats were easier to spot.
Bai Li stopped when he met them: “Meow?”
Do you know where the boss around here is?
The big cat licking his paws in the grass lazily pointed him in a direction.
Following the direction the big cat indicated, Bai Li ran, stopped, and asked quite a few cats, and finally, he got an answer.
“Meow, meow meow, meow meow.”
The boss got annoyed by a foolish human and went to conquer that human!
Bai Li: “?”
He looked confused, not knowing how this boss planned to conquer a human.
“If you want to find the boss, go to XXX,” the big cat told him a place.
A few days ago, Bai Li had walked all around here looking for work, so he immediately knew where that place was.
“Meow.”
Thank you.
After politely thanking, Bai Li ran toward the place the big cat had mentioned.
The big cat had pointed to a particularly beautiful place, with a signboard that read “Chuxi Club.” When Bai Li went to ask if there was any work for him, he was refused.
Though refused, the person who turned him down still spoke very gently.
Soon after,
Bai Li stood in front of Chuxi Club. As luck would have it, the manager came out for some fresh air and happened to see him.
“小猫崽, you’re here again.”
The manager’s face showed obvious fatigue, but upon seeing Bai Li, he considerately put away the cigarette he had just taken out, seemingly worried the smoke would bother this still-young kitten.
Bai Li’s eyes widened; he saw black mist around the manager too, but it wasn’t the stubborn kind that would relentlessly pursue a certain gentleman.
“Here, take this.”
The manager crouched in front of him, a smile at the corner of his mouth: “Our boss recently asked me to buy some stuff for the cats to eat, and I have some left over.”
Bai Li looked at the food being stuffed into the bag hung around his neck, then at the black mist on the manager, tilting his head: “Meow?”
What’s wrong with you?
Under the cat hypnosis, the manager sighed and rubbed his hair.
“It’s nothing, I just accidentally offended a client earlier. I might get fired.”
That client was a regular, powerful and influential, and the manager usually fawned over him.But today, the client took a liking to a little girl brought by a rich second-generation classmate inside the club. The man, in his forties or fifties, touched the girl, who was still wearing her high school uniform, scaring her into tears.
The manager had a daughter of his own. Seeing this scene, he held back repeatedly but couldn’t bear it any longer and came to the girl’s aid. However, when he took her away, the client’s gaze toward him was clearly hostile.
“Meow meow.”
Don’t be sad.
Bai Li climbed onto the manager’s leg, patting away the black mist with his paws. After clearing the mist, he tried the cat blessing he had read about.
The cat blessing, sent by cats, can grant good luck to the recipient.
Of course, the good luck isn’t exaggerated—just a little smoother daily life.
Bai Li thought for a few seconds, then drew a few soft strokes on the back of the manager’s hand with his paw pads, without extending claws.
Having sent the uncertain-effect cat blessing, Bai Li finally asked, “Are there other cats in the club?”
The manager shook his head, “Not sure, haven’t seen any cats, but the boss told me to buy stuff for cats.”
Hearing this, Bai Li wanted to go inside to take a look.
The manager was originally unwilling, but Bai Li kept pleading.
“I’m very small, no one will see me.”
Bai Li promised, “I’m also very good at hiding, if I hide, no one will see me at all.”
After being begged for quite a while, the manager finally agreed to pretend not to see and let him in.
Not long after,
A white little kitten grew near the wall of the club.
The kitten poked its head out cautiously, looking around. After confirming no one was there, it hurriedly called out, “Meow meow!”
Boss, are you there?
The club was very large; Bai Li not only meowed but also tried to sniff the air for the scent of other cats.
“President Xie, President Xie?”
In a private room on the west side, the man beside Xie Chen called him twice.
Xie Chen came back to his senses and looked at the man calling him, “Sorry, what were you saying just now?”
The man smiled, “I was talking to you about the end-of-month bidding. It’s rare to see you so distracted—what were you thinking about?”
Xie Chen frowned slightly, didn’t answer, but instead asked, “Did you hear any cats meowing?”
“No.”
The man casually poured himself a glass of wine, “I don’t recall any cats being kept in here.”Xie Chen frowned silently, still feeling like he heard that meowing sound. Soft, with a bit of kittenish tone—it was the little kitten he was familiar with.
“I’m going out for a bit.”
After sitting for a few more minutes, Xie Chen stood up, told the man beside him, and pushed the door open to leave.
“Strange.”
The man behind him said in surprise, “It’s the first time I’ve seen him get distracted during a meeting, and now he just leaves.”
“Meow meow!”
“Meow meow!”
Bai Li was like a guerrilla kitten, choosing places with no one or just after people left to meow loudly.
He meowed for who knows how long, until his ears twitched and he vaguely heard a meowing response.
Bai Li: “!”
Wow.
Found it.
His eyes sparkled as he happily headed toward the direction where the meow had come from.
Not far away, just ahead.
“Meow?”
Are you there?
After finding the spot, Bai Li looked at the closed door in front of him and tilted his head to meow.
No response from inside. Bai Li pressed against the door crack and began to look inside.
The room was especially grand, with various objects neatly arranged. A thick carpet covered the floor, and there seemed to be a cat teaser on the table.
Bai Li leaned his chubby little body, staring intently, but accidentally slipped and fell inside with a plop.
The door wasn’t closed!
Just then, Xie Chen found the corridor and watched with wide eyes as the little kitten pawed at the door and fell inside.
His expression darkened, not knowing what the little kitten was trying to do.
There were all kinds of people in the club, so to be safe, Xie Chen followed inside.
Once inside, his gaze met that of a person coming out from the balcony.
The person sat in a wheelchair, with a handsome but pale face, and even from afar, one could smell the long-term scent of medicine.
“Xie Chen.”
The man saw him and called his name in surprise.Xie Chen didn’t expect to run into him: “When did you come back?”
“Not long ago.”
Xie Chen pressed his lips, his gaze falling on the man’s legs. After a moment, he still asked, “Did it help?”
The man in the wheelchair was Yan Cen, someone Xie Chen had known since childhood. However, after Yan Cen’s legs became disabled, he had spent years seeking treatment elsewhere, so they hadn’t seen each other much.
“No use.”
Yan Cen smiled faintly: “My family likes to fuss around. Since I’m fine anyway, I just let them do as they please.”
While the two talked, the little kitten’s butt under the curtain kept shaking.
Startled from falling into the room, Bai Li immediately darted under the curtain, hiding just like before, head inside, butt outside.
Xie Chen raised an eyebrow.
Following his gaze, Yan Cen also saw the small round kitten’s butt under the curtain.
“You know it?”
“Mm.”
Xie Chen responded softly, “Lili, come out. I see you.”
Bai Li, being called, was flustered!
He hid his head further inside, but he couldn’t see people while people could see him.
After being called again, Bai Li lowered his head and reluctantly crawled slowly out from under the curtain.
“Meow.”
Yan Cen looked at the little kitten, then at Xie Chen, guessing, “This kitten came looking for you?”
Xie Chen thought for a moment and suddenly felt that was possible.
In this club, he hadn’t seen the kitten get close to anyone or be held by anyone.
Since both came here today, it made sense the kitten was looking for him.
Xie Chen nodded reservedly and was about to call the kitten over.
Unexpectedly, the little kitten, right in front of him, turned and crawled under the bed.
Xie Chen: “???”
Come back here!
Under the bed, Bai Li puffed and crawled in, meeting a pair of cold, bright green cat eyes right in the center."Meow."
Hello, Boss.
