Chapter 100
Chapter 100
"Wooh!" The polar bear gently patted Lin Qianyu’s leg with its paw.
It was an Arctic fox.
Also known as the blue fox, white fox, or snow fox—small in size, with a round, chubby figure and crescent-shaped eyes that made it look like it was always smiling.
The Arctic fox was covered in dense, thick fur, and its fluffy tail was lively and cute.
At the moment, it seemed to be hunting.
Lin Qianyu couldn’t help but move closer to the glass window. The snow-white Arctic fox had apparently failed in its hunt—it had dived into the snow twice in a row without catching anything.
When hunting, Arctic foxes leap into the air and dive into the snow with full force. Their diet is quite varied: birds, eggs, fish, even berries.
Right now, it was probably after a lemming or Arctic hare hiding beneath the snow.
Finally, after another dive, the fox raised its head again—with a lemming clamped in its mouth.
The Arctic fox gave its fur a shake to fling off the snow and turned to leave, seemingly looking for a quiet place to enjoy its meal.
However, as it turned, it also happened to spot the person behind the glass beyond the fence.
In an instant, the Arctic fox bristled, fur puffed up, though it didn’t let go of its prey.
Lin Qianyu smiled, her eyes curving. “Pretty skilled.”
Hang Sisi came in to change her shoes. Seeing Lin Qianyu standing by the window, she looked out curiously. “Qianyu-jie? What are you looking at?”
Lin Qianyu said, “An Arctic fox was hunting.”
While they spoke, the Arctic fox had already trotted off with its catch.
Its fluffy tail, even puffier from bristling, bobbed with each step as it ran.
Hang Sisi couldn’t spot the fox in the snow-covered landscape. She followed Lin Qianyu’s pointing finger and just managed to catch a glimpse of its retreating figure.
“Pretty cute,” Lin Qianyu said as the fox disappeared. She rolled her stiff ankles and prepared to leave as well.
Hang Sisi sighed and couldn’t help but comment, “Qianyu-jie, you’re amazing. No matter how extreme the environment, you always seem to turn a tough assignment into an all-expenses-paid vacation.”
Lin Qianyu laughed and patted her shoulder. “Go rest early after you change your shoes. We’ve got class tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
By “class,” it meant the rescue center staff would brief them on important island safety protocols.
Some essential survival techniques.
Lin Qianyu took the room key Director Su had handed out and headed up to the second floor.
She had just sat down on the bed when she received a message from Feng Jingye.
[Did the polar bear come to find you?]
For some reason, whenever Lin Qianyu now saw the names "polar bear" and "Feng Jingye" together, she couldn’t help but smile.
She typed back: [Yeah. The polar bear mistook me for you.]
Maybe it had gotten used to watching for private jets. The planes coming to and from the island were nothing more than those transporting animals for the rescue station, supplies, staff flights, or Feng Jingye’s private jet.
There wasn’t much difference in their appearance—who knew how the polar bear could tell them apart?
Lin Qianyu joked with a smile: [What did you do to offend the polar bear? It lay there for so long, covered in a thick layer of snow, just to smack you when you got off the plane.]
Polar bears had incredible patience and execution.
Luckily, in this freezing snow-covered land, no one had the leisure to stroll around. Otherwise, just walking by might’ve led to someone stepping on the polar bear.
Feng Jingye teased in return: [A bond nurtured since childhood.]
Lin Qianyu instantly burst into laughter, falling back onto the bed—what a “nurtured since childhood.”
The only one he hadn’t somehow upset seemed to be the white lion on the Grassland Island.
But even that ended in conflict when they came to film the show.
From now on, no matter which island Feng Jingye visits, there’ll always be a furry creature eagerly waiting for him.
The guests attended several days of “classes.”
All of it was theoretical learning inside the villa—they didn’t step outside at all.
Mainly because it was too cold. No matter how thickly dressed, they could only walk a short distance before the chill became unbearable.
Also, putting on and taking off heavy clothing was too troublesome. Since the director didn’t require them to go out, everyone just stayed in and lazed around.
Su Yuxing fiddled with a watch. “This is a custom-made watch specifically for Polar Island. During the show, everyone must monitor their body temperature. If the watch detects anything unusual and issues a red warning, your participation will be immediately revoked to avoid unconscious hypothermia.”
Frostbite, too, often occurred before one even realized it—by the time you noticed, your hands would already be stiff.
For non-professionals, theoretical knowledge alone wasn’t enough—they also needed professional equipment.
“In addition, other dangers won’t force you out of the competition. Only if you set off a signal flare or say the full distress code in the livestream room, and the rescue team arrives on-site, will you lose qualification.”
Su Yuxing handed out the watches. “Everyone, wear your watches. The livestream for Episode 3 of Wilderness will officially begin this afternoon.”
Lin Qianyu accepted hers. The dial was larger than the ones they’d used before. Aside from what Su Yuxing mentioned, it could also monitor heart rate.
Hang Sisi was fastening her watch and asked, “Director, how do we choose supplies this time?”
If you didn’t get the right tools at the start, it was nearly impossible to last more than five hours out here. No one could endure that.
Choosing just three items clearly wasn’t enough.
Su Yuxing had anticipated this when planning and discussed it with the production team. “The crew will provide standardized supplies. Aside from goggles and windproof clothing, there’ll be tents, sleeping bags… and an axe.”
Lastly, everyone would receive the usual top-quality mountaineering backpack the show always offered.
[An axe? Did I hear that right?]
[Hahahaha I can’t help but suspect this axe was added thanks to Lin-jie.]
[Let’s go already! I can’t wait! Please, promise us—go out there and rua the polar bear, okay? And the Arctic fox from last time too—you saw each other, how can you not scoop it up and cuddle it!!!]
Lin Qianyu still hadn’t started her own livestream, but the official stream had never been turned off. It occasionally broadcast the guests’ current status.
Aside from daily lessons and filming the buffet meals, the only things worth showing were the outdoor scenery and the occasional lucky sighting of a small animal.Lin Qianyu was organizing her backpack. Things that weren’t easily crushed were placed at the bottom, and the tent, which couldn’t fit inside, was hooked onto the top once the pack was packed.
In addition to those, the production team had surprisingly prepared fishing gear for them.
It was a complete tackle box—only lacking bait.
“This is definitely the most generous the production team has ever been.” Gong Xinming, carrying all the gear, felt a surreal sense of disbelief. Was the production team really being this nice? Could there be a catch?
Seeing his expression, Su Yuxing could easily guess what he was thinking. “Relax, it’s all the real deal. We can’t possibly expect you all to dig holes and catch fish with your bare hands.”
If they couldn’t find the hole afterward, he’d be the one panicking.
Gong Xinming thought about it and agreed, nodding with a cheerful grin as he lifted the box.
Su Yuxing clapped his hands. “Alright, if there’s nothing else, let’s all finish packing and get ready to go.”
As he spoke, he started tidying up his own things too.
Feng Jingye arrived just as they were boarding the vehicle. By then, his luggage had already been organized and loaded onto the car.
After boarding, he scanned the available seats and eventually sat down next to Lin Qianyu. “How are you feeling? Settling in okay on the island?”
“Mm, it’s been good. The animals are really cute too.” Lin Qianyu noticed he looked a bit tired. “Just got off the plane?”
Feng Jingye nodded and rubbed his brow. “Slept a bit on the plane, but the more I slept, the more exhausted I felt.”
Lin Qianyu handed him a mint candy. “Make sure to get some proper rest.”
Feng Jingye smiled and accepted it.
It was the same brand of mint candy he had previously given to Lin Qianyu.
From the front passenger seat, Su Yuxing turned around. “Oh, right—since the environment is so extreme, the production team suggests guests form teams and move together. Any thoughts?”
In such frigid conditions, sticking together was the safest option.
If anything happened to a teammate, having someone around would be helpful.
Lin Qianyu thought for a moment and said, “I can stay with others at night, but during the day, I’d like to act alone.”
Rather than observing the environment, she was more interested in watching the small animals on Polar Island.
And when it came to observing animals, the fewer people, the better.
More people meant more noise, which made the animals much more alert.
Su Yuxing nodded. “Alright. Anyone else? Feel free to speak up.”
The other guests had no strong opinions—most preferred sticking together.
The bus radio kept repeating safety tips, which were the same things they’d studied over the past few days. Even if they didn’t consciously memorize them, hearing them again might help them recall key points when needed.
Snow chains clanked on the bus’s tires, and the vehicle moved slowly.
Time on the bus dragged on. Lin Qianyu rubbed the goggles in her hand.
The heater inside the bus was on full blast. Even without her coat on, sitting by the window didn’t feel cold at all.
Thud thud… thud thud…There was a faint sound of glass being hit.
Lin Qianyu’s slightly drooping head jolted with the movement of the bus, and the drowsiness that had just crept in was instantly shaken off.
She turned her head in confusion. The window was fogged up with a thick layer of condensation, some of which had formed into droplets sliding down the glass.
Through the streaks left by those tiny droplets, Lin Qianyu seemed to see a black paw pad tapping the window from outside.
Lin Qianyu: "???"
She didn’t hear any polar bear growl, but saw the bear outside lower its head, carefully trying to make out who was inside through the glass.
The bus was moving very slowly—so slowly that the polar bear didn’t even need to run; just walking at a leisurely pace outside was enough to keep up.
Lin Qianyu reached out to wipe away the fog on the window, and her view immediately cleared.
The polar bear could see more clearly now too. It opened its mouth in what looked like a grin—but as it grinned, the seal it was holding in its mouth dropped to the ground. It looked down, scooped it back up with its paw, and continued chasing the bus.
A big white fluffy blob trotting after the bus, grinning foolishly.
Lin Qianyu couldn’t help but smile too. It was very cute.
She opened her mouth and said, “Hi.”
The polar bear opened its mouth as well, and judging by the shape, probably said: “Aoo!”
It pawed at the window, trying to push open the glass in between them.
The reinforced glass was designed to withstand attacks from animals like this. Even after a few swipes from the polar bear, not a single crack appeared.
Lin Qianyu was wondering how to tell it to stop hitting the glass—that it would be dangerous if it broke—but was frustrated that the soundproofing on the bus was too good. Just then, a clicking sound rang out: ka-ka—a stumbling noise.
Somehow, the polar bear had managed to open the door a crack, squeezed its paw in, and then pushing open the window became much easier.
The bear successfully poked its head inside, beaming as it tried to hand her the seal it was carrying. “Aoo!”
But the next moment, Feng Jingye, who had been drowsily leaning against her, straightened up and turned his head—locking eyes with the polar bear.
The bear’s smile slowly disappeared. Its face turned expressionless... then filled with rage. Bang! It slapped the side of the bus, furious: “Roar!”
Feng Jingye narrowed his eyes slightly, clearly used to being roared at by now. He looked at the paw desperately swiping in his direction but not quite reaching him, and raised an eyebrow at the bear.
The polar bear: “!!!”
“ROAR——!”
It let out another loud roar in frustration.
But then, as if realizing something, the roar abruptly stopped.
The polar bear looked at Lin Qianyu, blinked, then slowly slid the seal in through the window—placing it gently at her feet.
“Woo!” The bear lightly patted Lin Qianyu’s leg with its paw.
It was really light—probably the bear was deliberately being careful. When it landed on her leg, it just felt a little cold, like a soothing touch.
Then it turned its head and glared fiercely at Feng Jingye, baring its teeth.
【Good grief, comforting one and scolding the other—classic behavior.】【Such a double standard hahaha, so cute. That white paw tapping so gently, like handling a plush toy. Ughhh… I’m melting from the cuteness.】
