Chapter 120

Chapter 120: The Arctic wolf, also known as the white wolf, is a subspecies of the gray wolf.

The Arctic wolf that quickly ran past the camera had a strong, robust build. Scattered patches of silver-gray fur could be seen on its back, but most of it was covered by thick white fur and falling snow.

One Arctic wolf led the way at the front, and soon more wolves appeared behind it.

Heavy snowflakes still floated down from the sky. The wolves seemed to be moving with purpose, not stopping at all.

If you looked closely, you could see the unusually colored prey clutched in the wolf’s mouth.

Perhaps it was a hunting pack now hurrying back to its territory.

After the Arctic wolves passed, the feed seemed to grow quiet. Compared to the image of wolves running, even the snow swirling in the wind seemed to settle.

Lin Qianyu couldn’t help lowering her voice. “Those are Arctic wolves, right?”

Arctic wolves are among the few mammals that can survive in extreme cold environments.

【Wow! Aren’t those just a bunch of Samoyeds?!】

【Cool and fierce Samoyeds—love it. Linlin, what are you waiting for? If you don’t show up on camera within ten minutes, it’s a direct insult to the Arctic wolves’ charm.】

【White, fluffy canid wolves. It’s said that in the eyes of the Inuit, Arctic wolves are gentle and kind animals.】

【I can’t even imagine—if I had such a big white dog, I’d never want to stay indoors again.】

The pack wasn’t large—only five Arctic wolves ran past on screen. The one at the front was likely the alpha of the pack.

Lin Qianyu took a sip of warm water. Through the livestream, she noticed a cave opening in the distance, mostly covered by wind and snow. “They probably have a den over there.”

Smart wild animals had likely experienced this kind of extreme weather before. Within their own territory, they would naturally have shelter from the snow and wind.

The polar bear sniffed at the water in her hand and responded with a low “Wuu…”

Lin Qianyu raised her hand and brought the water bowl to its mouth. “It’s getting darker outside.”

The livestream had already automatically switched to night vision mode. The snow scene, now tinted with a greenish hue, felt somewhat less impressive.

All the furry ones at home loved this formula milk—they licked the bowls spotless, not even a drop left.

Lin Qianyu poured out the water the polar bear didn’t finish, then filled all the little animals’ bowls with freshly mixed milk. The polar bear’s bottle was also refilled.

She casually wiped the spilled milk off the table and folded the cloth. “Once you finish drinking, go to sleep. Let’s rest early tonight.”

There wasn’t much to do inside the igloo.

The snowstorm outside made it impossible to go anywhere, and she had run around several times during the day—her stamina was drained.

She yawned, massaged her shoulders, and headed into the bedroom.

Lying in the sleeping bag, she zipped it up to her waist. The soft feel was like being covered with a fluffy light quilt—light, yet very warm.

...

Outside, the little snow leopard licked its paw, then tilted its head and peeked through the open curtain. Seeing Lin Qianyu with her eyes closed, it paused, then jumped off the table. Its big tail stood upright behind it, bobbing slightly with each step.

The little spotted seal had its head buried in the milk bowl, not even lifting it once.

The Arctic fox, having licked its bowl clean, followed the snow leopard inside.Lin Qianyu lay in bed and unknowingly drifted off to sleep. Feeling a furry sensation at her neck, she reached up and pressed it down, tucking her chin against the fuzzy ball that kept nuzzling her. Her lips moved slightly. “Good night.” The words were soft as a breath, vaguely dispersing into the air.

“Wuu.”

Peace.

—The next day.

When Lin Qianyu opened her eyes, the room was dim with little light. She squinted and fumbled around the bedside, then tapped her phone screen to check the time.

“Ten o'clock?” Seeing it was nearly noon, Lin Qianyu quickly moved to get up, but just as she did, something came to mind and she lay back down.

There wasn’t much to do anyway. The fluffy ones had their formula milk before bed, and there was still some seal meat left in the kitchen—if they got hungry, they could eat right away.

She decided to lie in bed a little longer.

Lin Qianyu rubbed her chin against the small fluffy head in her arms.

The little snow leopard was sleeping deeply and didn’t open its eyes despite being kneaded like that.

“Wuu!” The polar bear came in from outside, bringing a chill with it, and was carrying something in its mouth that looked like snow.

It seemed Snowball had just returned from outside—there was still unmelted snow clinging to its body.

“What’s that?” Noticing the item in its mouth, Lin Qianyu asked suspiciously, “Did you go hunting?”

“Awoo…”

No.

“Picked it up?” Lin Qianyu got out of the sleeping bag and leaned over to poke the object—it felt like a piece of snow-covered wood.

She was still wondering why the polar bear would bring something like that back.

As the snow on it melted, what looked like soft fur began to show.

Lin Qianyu: “???”

It seemed to be a small animal frozen stiff in the snowstorm.

Realizing this, Lin Qianyu quickly got up, scooped the little animal off the floor, and carried it to the kitchen to start a fire.

The kitchen fire had been kept burning, but she added more wood to make it blaze higher.

As the snow on the little animal melted away, the true identity of the Arctic owl was revealed.

“It’s you.” Lin Qianyu gently rubbed its beak with her fingertip, then lifted its wing—its legs and claws were icy cold.

It’s hard for birds to fly during a blizzard. Flying with the wind is manageable, but against it, even a small mistake could send them hurtling through the storm, making it far more dangerous.

This snowy owl was probably blown down by the wind.

While clearing the snow caught between its feathers, Lin Qianyu asked, “Snowball, where did you pick it up?”

“Wuu!”

Box!

“The fridge?” Lin Qianyu gently smoothed the snowy owl’s feathers and guessed, “Maybe it was starving, couldn’t find food outside, and got lured here by the scent of blood.”Fortunately, it hadn’t gone into hypothermia. After being warmed for a while in the cozy environment, the snow melted off.

Seeing the snowy owl like this, Lin Qianyu no longer thought it had gotten trapped by accident—instead, it seemed more like it had come here on purpose and just fallen asleep.

Lin Qianyu said, “Snowball, could you bring me some fish? And some more meat too.”

“Awooo.”

Hearing the movement, the snowy owl slowly opened its eyes. Its sharp hawk-like gaze closely followed the polar bear’s departing figure.

The next moment, a slender, fair hand waved in front of its face.

It was very close. The snowy owl immediately fluffed up its feathers, especially around the neck, where they spread out like an open umbrella, layer upon fluffy layer.

“Are you okay?” Lin Qianyu pulled her hand back, though her other hand was still resting on the snowy owl’s feathers.

The snowy owl didn’t seem to notice. In fact, when Lin Qianyu tried to retract the hand that was gently stroking its feathers, it gave her a side-eye.

Lin Qianyu instantly froze her motion. A bird’s eyes, when wide open and staring, could be quite intimidating—it felt like a glare, though it wasn’t one in truth.

“Are you hungry?” Lin Qianyu curved her eyes in a smile as she looked at the white owl, though doubt lingered in her mind. It was only the first day of the blizzard. As a bird of prey, the snowy owl shouldn’t be in this kind of frozen state.

The snowy owl blinked those large eyes and silently turned its head away, saying nothing.

Staring at the round, fluffy head in front of her, Lin Qianyu resisted the urge to poke it. She got up as usual to boil hot water and went to collect snow to fill the food containers.

Lin Qianyu said, “It must have run into something unexpected and is in a bad mood, so it doesn’t want to talk.”

【Right? I wouldn’t want to talk either if that happened to me.】

【Hahaha exactly. That’s so tragic. Poor and pitiful.】

【Live and learn. Got stuck this time—next time it'll know how to open it.】

Noticing the comments in the livestream chat, Lin Qianyu raised an eyebrow. “Stuck? You all saw this snowy owl?”

Everyone seemed oddly familiar with it.

【Saw it in the official livestream!】

【Yeah, the official stream started showing base footage yesterday. I stayed up and saw the snowy owl last night.】

Following the chat’s guidance, Lin Qianyu exited her own stream and found the official livestream within the app.

She dragged the progress bar all the way back to before she went to sleep last night.

The blizzard late at night had seemed a bit lighter than during the day, but the cold wind was still howling.

The snowy owl’s flying shadow was especially noticeable against the heavy snow.

Moreover, when it arrived, it had something in its beak… a rabbit?

A live rabbit, still struggling, but utterly unable to escape the snowy owl’s grip.

After landing, the snowy owl looked around, seemingly searching for something. After waiting a while, as if confirming its target, it flew onto the top of Lin Qianyu’s fridge.

It was a large fridge, weighed down with something heavy on top of the wooden cover. The snowy owl poked its head in, trying to shove the rabbit through a gap.

But Lin Qianyu had left only a small slit. It couldn’t even fit the owl’s beak all the way in, let alone a live rabbit. After adjusting the angle and trying twice, the snowy owl seemed to realize it too.

But the clever Arctic owl didn’t give up. Instead, it used its claws to hook the wooden board, trying to pull away the obstruction so it could place the rabbit inside.

Lin Qianyu said in surprise, “So it actually came to deliver food.”

Despite the Arctic owl’s efforts, the wooden board didn’t budge at all, and the rabbit lay motionless.

Realizing it didn’t have the strength to open it, the snowy owl dropped the rabbit onto the wooden board. But just as it spread its wings to fly away, an accident occurred.

On screen, its claws were suddenly stuck fast between the boards. No matter how hard it flapped, it couldn’t free itself.

Normally, with the strength of an Arctic owl, it could probably lift the wooden board while flying. But unfortunately, there were heavy objects on top, which greatly hindered it.

And then... it gave up struggling. Snow piled up on its body as it quietly lay there, as if asleep. No one knew how much time passed until—thud—it suddenly fell from the board and dropped straight into the snow.

That was when the polar bear came out, saw it, and brought it inside.

The video played up to that point, and everything afterward Lin Qianyu already knew.

“Good thing the wind and snow eased up a bit overnight, otherwise…” The Arctic owl might not have made it till morning.

Lin Qianyu glanced at its claws—there were no visible injuries.

The video’s sound caught the snowy owl’s attention. Though it didn’t turn around, its eyes still flicked toward the screen. When it saw the footage, it froze for a moment, then let out a sharp cry: “Chirp——!”

【The bird involved has issued a sharp screech.】

【《Public Execution》】

【Just now all serene and sage-like—completely lost composure in the next second.】

【It’s okay, baby. You look a bit silly, but you weren’t smart to begin with.】

【??? Arctic Owl: If you can’t compliment me properly, just shut up.】

Lin Qianyu exited the official stream and calmly returned to her own stream. “Ahem, calm down.”

The Arctic owl’s cry cut off, and it squinted at her with narrowed eyes.

Lin Qianyu, keeping a straight face, attempted to explain, “If I say… that the bird in that video isn’t you, would you believe me?”

“……”

“Chirp——?!!”

Lin Qianyu rubbed her ear and thought helplessly: Alright, looks like that’s a no.

The Arctic owl’s screech woke up the little spotted seal still sleeping nearby.

After a busy night of drinking milk and cleaning milk off itself, the little thing was already worn out. Now being woken up early, the seal cub looked up angrily—only to pause when it saw the Arctic owl.

After all, there wasn’t a bird in the house before.

But the next moment, it recognized that this bird… seemed to be the one that tried to catch it earlier!

The little seal instantly lost it. “Aaaah awooo!”

Its cry was even louder than the Arctic owl’s.“Alright, alright, it wasn’t on purpose. A seal’s belly can carry a boat.” Lin Qianyu quickly picked up the little spotted seal that was rolling around. “It even specially brought you a rabbit.”

There’s no such thing as apologizing in the animal world, but offering food of its own accord—now that’s a clear signal of wanting to make peace.

Hearing what Lin Qianyu said, the little spotted seal, who had been all puffed up and ready to clash with the Arctic owl, paused. Because it trusted Lin Qianyu, it believed she wouldn’t lie.

However, thinking a bit deeper, the little spotted seal cried out again: “Awoo?!”

Do I even eat rabbit?!

Lin Qianyu: “…Right, huh. Little spotted seal probably doesn’t eat rabbit.”

【Pfft—hahaha I’m dying, the little one’s not so easily fooled.】

【Honestly, rather than saying the rabbit was for the seal, it’s more like it was meant for Sister Lin. From the beginning, the snowy owl was trying to put the rabbit into her fridge.】

【Yeah yeah yeah, clearly trying to befriend Lin Lin!】

The little spotted seal was fuming.

But anger aside, it couldn’t win in a fight, and its cries weren’t as sharp as the snowy owl’s, so it just glared at it indignantly.

Its eyes said everything.

Once the Arctic owl noticed that Lin Qianyu had turned off the previous video, it stopped looking over there.

Sensing the little seal’s stare, it thought for a moment, stayed still, then simply turned its head to face the wall.

Little spotted seal: “!!!”

Furious.

The little snow leopard was also awakened by the noise. When it came out of the bedroom, its eyes weren’t even fully open, looking so sleepy it might collapse and fall asleep at any moment.

Even so, it followed the scent step by step to Lin Qianyu’s side.

Lin Qianyu picked it up, and the little snow leopard skillfully found a comfy spot in her arms, settled down, and continued sleeping.

The Arctic fox sat nearby, curiously observing the snowy owl on the table.

Possibly because their paths never overlapped outside, the Arctic fox seemed unfamiliar with and intrigued by what it was seeing.

If they were outside, it might cautiously assess the snowy owl’s potential danger. But right now, they were at home—on territory the Arctic fox considered completely safe.

So, without realizing it, it let its guard down and looked at the snowy owl with pure curiosity.

The snowy owl let them all stare and continued facing the wall, perfectly still.

The polar bear carried in food—what it couldn’t carry in its mouth, it held with its claws—bringing in a large load all at once.

Lin Qianyu patted Snowball’s head. “Good job. How about having a can of fruit as dessert before the meal?”

The polar bear didn’t know what “dessert” meant, but it understood the word “sweet.”

On the sweetness-starved Arctic island, Lin Qianyu’s words were incredibly tempting for the sweet-toothed polar bear.

Lin Qianyu found a spot to set the little snow leopard down, then reached for the can—the canned yellow peaches were from Feng Jingye last time.

Later, too many things came up, and she never got around to opening it.Canned goods have a long shelf life, so waiting a little longer doesn’t make a difference.

The metal can packaging effectively seals in the flavor.

But the polar bear seemed to have guessed that there was something “sweet” inside. It leaned in, resting its head on Lin Qianyu’s wrist. “Mmm…”

“Don’t rush, let me open it first.” Lin Qianyu soothed the impatient polar bear, slowly pulling the tab on the metal can. The sweet, syrupy aroma of the canned fruit immediately wafted out.

It might not be that obvious to humans, but little animals’ noses wouldn’t miss it.

Catching a whiff of the canned sweetness, the polar bear’s eyes lit up. Its small black eyes didn’t blink, and its nose kept twitching. “Awoo!”

Clearly, it was very eager—but even so, it lay down obediently, scratching at the floor with its claws.

“Careful not to scratch your nose.” Lin Qianyu moved the can a bit farther away, then pulled off the metal lid. Inside, half a yellow peach soaked in syrup gleamed brightly.

It looked plump, round, and temptingly colorful.

The polar bear kept whining, its eyes practically glued to the can.

Lin Qianyu picked up a piece of yellow peach and fed it to the polar bear first. “Ah—”

“Awoo—” The polar bear obediently opened its mouth.

As the sweet peach entered its mouth, the polar bear squinted its eyes in delight.

Author’s note: Wuwuwu awooo... Didn’t get to the major plot point yet. We’ll bring the Arctic wolf home in the next chapter.
