Chapter 50
Chapter 50
“Heh... Big Tiger is really considerate.”
Kaiwen inhaled sharply over and over—as if he’d strap on an oxygen tank if one were available.
I trusted you that much!!!
And yet you went behind my back—no, right in front of me—and taught Greenland how to escape.
Kaiwen clutched at the bridge of his nose, trying to calm himself. “W-what else did it say?”
Lin Qianyu replied, “It also told Greenland not to give up, to remember the route, wait for the right timing—there’s always another chance to escape. That dumb... cough, well, that one might not be lucky enough to find you every time.”
Maybe because it got scared by the tiger last time, Greenland had given up on sneaking out. The grumpy leopard cat had really been laying on the persuasion, full of heartfelt advice.
At the moment, Kaiwen was completely stunned, like a rock had just smashed into his face. The conversation was very different from what he had imagined.
Kaiwen was speechless: “……”
The leopard cat pretending to be asleep twitched its paw—clearly hearing what Lin Qianyu said—and didn’t dare open its eyes.
Greenland looked at Lin Qianyu, then at its own kind, hesitating on whether to also pretend to nap.
The grumpy leopard cat sneakily reached out a paw from the table edge and tapped Greenland.
Still in a daze, Greenland followed suit and lay down.
Kaiwen was about to explode. He had thought everything was going so smoothly, that things were turning for the better—but turns out, his own home was being stolen.
That leopard cat actually dared to eat his food and steal his cat—right in front of him?!
The grumpy leopard cat squinted to sneak a peek at Lin Qianyu, only to lock eyes with the grassland wolf. A large feline with little real fighting power but a very bad temper immediately stood up and bared its teeth.
However, after just a brief stare-down with the grassland wolf, the cat instantly calmed itself.
…Too scared to stay mad.
It shrank back, curling its tail around itself. Its front paws kneaded the tip of its tail as it blinked its big eyes obediently, “Aoo~” The drawn-out ending sounded soft and syrupy, full of fake sweetness.
【Hahaha it folded immediately.】
【Awoo! What a delicate little kitty—no wait… big kitty.】
【Don’t be fooled by appearances, girls! That deep roar earlier was louder than my great-grandpa’s voice.】
The grassland wolf’s expression turned cold. “Growl!”
The grumpy leopard cat yelped sharply in fear, “Awo awo awo…”
It yowled while backing away quickly. It tried to keep its bravado, but its hind paws had already reached the table’s edge.
The grassland wolf had only let out a low growl, not intending to attack. But seeing the cat back off, it stepped forward to stand protectively in front of Lin Qianyu.
Using its own body to block the rusty-spotted leopard cat from her.
Lin Qianyu gently rubbed the wolf’s head, then said to Greenland, “When you sneak out like that, Kaiwen really worries about you.”
For a rusty-spotted leopard cat raised by humans since birth, the unknown environment and wild companions of the rainforest held immense appeal.
Running off was just out of curiosity—exploring unfamiliar places wasn’t really that big of a problem.Seeing Kaiwen nodding like a bobblehead, Lin Qianyu added, “If you really like being outside, you can ask Kaiwen to take you out. He’d probably be happy to play with you out there.”
Greenland hesitated, flicking its tail. “Mrr…”
Kaiwen chimed in, “Yeah, just let me know if you want to go out. As long as it’s safe, you can go wherever you want.”
He wasn’t a rigid person. If Greenland could hunt and feed itself and had enough experience to avoid becoming dinner for some predator, he’d be more than happy to let it live outside.
Plus, he worked here—so even if Greenland settled in the rainforest, he could still visit often.
But Greenland had never undergone any training and clearly wasn’t capable of that.
Just judging from the way it got itself into such a mess the last two times it ran off, it really wasn’t fit to survive in the wild.
So keeping it close offered peace of mind.
Otherwise, letting an animal with no survival skills loose in a rainforest full of dangers would just be sending it to its death.
Greenland tilted its head, still trying to grasp what Lin Qianyu meant.
The grumpy leopard cat had already jumped down first, biting down on a biscuit from the table and swaggering around the grassland wolf, “Awo!”
Greenland caught on and jumped off the table too, rubbing affectionately against Kaiwen’s leg.
That was a good sign.
Kaiwen lit up instantly.
But a second later, his smile froze completely.
Greenland had only offered a quick, half-hearted show of affection before turning to chase after the grumpy leopard cat.
Kaiwen: “???”
“Hey, wait—when I said I’d go with you, I didn’t mean right now! You need to wear a tracker first, and I have to apply for protection—wait! Come back!”
“Awooo!”
None of the prep had been done yet—just heading out like that, if they ran into a predator, what could he even do?
At best, his only real contribution would be throwing himself at the beast to take it down with him in mutual destruction.
Kaiwen rushed after them in a panic, and as he passed Lin Qianyu, he still managed to say, “Thanks for translating for me—gotta go catch them first!”
Then he shouted at the top of his lungs, “Don’t run off! You haven’t even finished your food yet! Eat first before playing!”
Pei Feng stepped aside, watching the scene unfold. He couldn’t help but shake his head. “There’s going to be drama from now on.”
Kaiwen treated Greenland like the apple of his eye. He’d be constantly worried Greenland would run off to find a male leopard cat. If that happened, he’d probably be trailing after it every day just to feel secure.
Pei Feng looked away and said, “Let’s go, time for your check-up.”
Lin Qianyu: “Mm.”
Mental evaluations are different from physical exams. The latter rely on machines and doctors, while the former depends mainly on the doctor’s judgment.
There’s no need to wait for machine results—once the doctor finishes the assessment, a conclusion can be drawn.
In the examination room upstairs. The doctor flipped through the physical exam report, along with another assessment on mental state. Tapping his pen on the desk, he considered for a moment before saying, “I think the grassland wolf’s physical condition is now normal, with no recurrence of stereotypic behavior. The situation is relatively stable, so it’s ready to be sent to its original destination.”
In a suitable environment, it could be properly cared for.
There was no need for it to remain here.
Lin Qianyu nodded. “Alright, I understand. Thank you, doctor.”
The stack of paper reports was quite thick. Lin Qianyu gathered them together and, with the grassland wolf, headed for the door. “When are animals usually transported between islands?”
Pei Feng quickly walked ahead to open the door. “There’s no fixed schedule. Since animals are used to different living environments, most of the time they’re not transferred around lightly. The grassland wolf is a special case—it can be flown out at any time upon request.”
After a pause, Pei Feng added, “During air transport, it’s always accompanied by a handler from the destination. It’s very safe.”
“Mm.” Lin Qianyu said, “Then please help me submit the request.”
Pei Feng: “Alright. I’ll submit the report from my end. At the latest, staff will arrive in three days. If it’s fast, it might leave as soon as tomorrow. That depends on the receiving side. I’ll let you know once it’s ready.”
“Okay. I’ll continue walking the little wolf through the rainforest these next few days.”
Pei Feng got busy preparing the application and turned back after sending them to the elevator.
After saying goodbye to Pei Feng and stepping into the elevator, Lin Qianyu seemed distracted.
Animals are highly sensitive. Sensing Lin Qianyu’s mood, the grassland wolf circled in front of her and looked up.
“Little wolf, do you still remember what the grasslands are like?” Lin Qianyu squatted down, holding the grassland wolf’s head in her hands, gently rubbing behind its ears with her index fingers. “How about I send you back to the grasslands in a few days?”
“You’ll meet others like you there, and maybe even see wolf packs. You could even build your own group.”
“This environment here doesn’t really suit you—you must’ve sensed that, right?”
The grassland wolf blinked softly. “Mrr…”
No.
Lin Qianyu let out a soft laugh. Just then, the elevator doors opened, and she stood up to lead the grassland wolf out. “I think you have sensed it.”
“Don’t be scared. You’re just going there first, to help me check things out. After a while, I’ll come visit you—how’s that sound?” Lin Qianyu sat on the steps at the entrance, the eaves above shading them from the sun.
“It won’t be long. We’ll see each other again soon. Hmm… let me think.” Animals don’t really grasp concrete timeframes like “one day” or “two days.”
How to describe the time between being sent back and seeing each other again?
Lin Qianyu hesitated, then said, “See that sun up there?”
She pointed to the sun hanging in the sky. “Count the sunrises—no more than fifteen—and we’ll meet again, okay?”
“Awo!”
“Alright, it’s a promise.” Lin Qianyu held the grassland wolf’s paw, hooked her pinky around its paw pad. When that didn’t hold, she just grabbed it and gave it a shake. “Pinky swear—break it and you’ll be hung for a hundred years.”
The grassland wolf raised its head. “Awoooo!”
【Ahhh, I really can’t bear to part with the little wolf.】
【Does it really have to leave? What if we just rename it and call it the Rainforest Wolf from now on?】
【Come on, are you trying to cheat the system? Changing its name doesn’t change anything!】【Though it’s touching, just imagining Sister Lin in the next variety show opening with the little wolf in her arms, dominating the field and randomly pissing off a director is hilarious.】
This is where the benefit of being able to communicate with animals really shows.
They can feel the parting, but they might misunderstand the reason behind it.
For example… they might think they’ve been abandoned, given up on, taken to a completely unfamiliar place and never to be seen again.
But Lin Qianyu could tell the grassland wolf exactly what she wanted to say—tell it that this separation was only for a few days, that it was going to a better environment, that it was a chance for the little wolf to find itself again, to find the wolf king that once roamed the grasslands so freely.
It saved a lot of trouble.
Lin Qianyu’s eyes curved in a smile. She reached up, wrapped her arms around the little wolf’s neck, and leaned her whole body against it.
The grassland wolf stood still like a post, but couldn’t help lowering its head to lick her cheek.
Lin Qianyu pointed toward the nearby training field. “Wanna give that a try?”
She’d promised the little wolf earlier, back when it was still injured, that she’d let it try that out.
No one knew whether the grasslands had training fields like this. Before heading off, it could run around here a bit.
“Woo!”
“Wooo? Alright, let’s go—together.” Lin Qianyu stood up and patted the dust off her clothes.
When training dogs on those obstacle courses, the trainers usually held leashes and ran alongside them the whole time.
But the little wolf clearly didn’t need any of that.
As Lin Qianyu approached, the dogs running and jumping on the equipment clearly noticed an unusual presence.
The nearest husky looked up. “Woof woof! Woof woof!”
The trainer tightened the leash. “Dajin! Quiet! Sit!”
“Woof!” The husky ignored him, continuing to bark in Lin Qianyu’s direction.
But on closer look, it seemed like its target wasn’t Lin Qianyu—but the grassland wolf.
Lin Qianyu raised an eyebrow. “Looks like it thinks the little wolf is one of its own.”
Despite the husky’s provocations, the grassland wolf remained calm, sticking close to Lin Qianyu. If not for its ears twitching slightly, she would’ve thought it hadn’t even heard the husky barking.
But clearly—it heard, and simply chose not to respond.
Seeing it silent, the husky barked even louder.
“Woof woof!”
“Woof woof!”
Full of aggression, it even reared up against the leash, acting like it was ready to charge in for a final showdown.
A Rottweiler that had just gotten down from the training course walked over, panting heavily. The moment it saw what was happening, it turned and bolted without hesitation.
“Wuuuuh…” The leash yanked at its neck, and it tumbled in a skid like it had just pulled off a sliding tackle on itself.
Staggering up, it ducked behind its trainer’s legs and peeked out cautiously through a narrow gap.A total coward.
The husky kept barking loudly. Its trainer hurriedly said, “Stop barking! That’s a wolf, calm down! Do you think I’d let anything happen to you?!”
“Woof woof!”
Trainer: “…That really is a wolf. If you rush at it, both of us will get in trouble.”
The husky ignored him. The trainer took a deep breath and threw the leash aside.
Fate decides life and death, fortune is in the heavens.
The husky had been tightly restrained and was about to charge out, but with the leash suddenly loosened, it instinctively lunged forward a few steps.
Its face was full of confusion and embarrassment.
The grassland wolf lowered its voice, emitting a low growl-like rasp, “Woo…”
“!!!”
In an instant, the husky panicked, twisted around, and ran off. Its hind legs slipped a few times on the ground, barely managing to stand, and it scrambled away half-crawling. It didn’t forget to grab the other end of its leash in its mouth, hurriedly trying to shove it back into the trainer’s hand.
“Hold me! Hold me! Reach out, please!”
The husky was so anxious it seemed like it wanted to speak.
【Hahaha, damn, the dog learned what it means to rely on a human.】
【Husky with a leash: So what if it’s a wolf? I’m fighting you to the death today!
Husky without a leash: Master, aren’t you holding me anymore?】
【Why hide? Come out and wag your tail for your wolf brother.】
【The boss next door: I was practically hinting at it to run, but it didn’t. I almost had to cover its mouth with my paw!】
…
Compared to the husky, its trainer was also pretty embarrassed now.
“Ha ha, hello, Sister Lin.” The trainer tried to lead the dog forward, but the husky resisted, sticking its heels to the ground and refusing to move.
Lin Qianyu nodded politely, “Hello.”
“Little wolf, let’s go, we’ll take the trail inside.”
“Woof!”
The innermost trail was longer, so running it fully was too tiring, which was why most people stuck to the first few trails.
This was a good spot to bring the little wolf to play.
The training equipment was a full set, somewhat like an obstacle course—wooden posts, low walls, high jump platforms… several challenges connected together.
A slightly more difficult run seemed to better stimulate the grassland wolf’s interest.
Lin Qianyu looked at the two nearby tracks and thought instead of running alongside at the bottom, why not… She smiled suddenly, tying up her hair. “How about a race? If I win, you have to reward me with a kiss. If I lose, you get punished by a kiss from me. Deal?”
The grassland wolf opened its mouth, not sure if it understood the meaning, but paused a moment before “woo”-ing and jumping into Lin Qianyu’s arms.
“That means you agree.” Lin Qianyu laughed, “Come on, get ready, let’s start together.”“Woof!”
“Here we go.” Lin Qianyu cleared her throat, “Three—”
“Woo…” The grassland wolf lowered its body.
“Two—”
“One!”
As Lin Qianyu’s voice fell, she and the grassland wolf charged forward simultaneously.
They ran up the slope onto the single-plank bridge. Though it was their first time crossing, the grassland wolf’s steps were steady and its speed didn’t falter at all.
Lin Qianyu held her phone with the camera on, running almost side-by-side with the wolf at equal speed, keeping the little wolf centered in the frame.
After the plank bridge came three connected hoops. The grassland wolf leapt, its body fully stretched in midair, effortlessly clearing the hoops and landing smoothly.
Lin Qianyu jumped at the same time, landing with one hand touching the ground, rolling forward, landing steadily in a half-squat, then pushing off to surge ahead.
The whole sequence flowed naturally, her phone still raised high.
The grassland wolf didn’t slow down, accelerating directly up a wall several meters high.
Lin Qianyu swung herself onto the wall, briefly facing the wolf, then tilted her body and jumped down from the platform.
Moving forward, she crawled under a spiked net, then ran over a half-curved slope.
Approaching the finish line, Lin Qianyu showed no intention of sprinting; instead, she stopped beside the grassland wolf at the white line, wanting to capture a sprint finish shot.
However, the grassland wolf suddenly lunged at her.
Lin Qianyu half-squatted to find an angle, but before she realized it, the little wolf had pounced directly on her.
The raised phone was pressed down by the wolf’s thick fur.
The grassland wolf looked excited, as if delighted by the successful prank.
Lin Qianyu tossed the phone aside and hugged the wolf, rolling on the ground together.
“Woof!” The wolf tilted its head; her vision shifted.
“Ha ha!” Lin Qianyu laughed loudly and gave the wolf’s furry belly two strong pets.
The grassland wolf poked its head forward to lick her; Lin Qianyu hugged it and rolled two more times, not caring that she got dirt on her clothes.
“We crossed the line together, that means a tie for first place.” Lin Qianyu’s smile remained as she pressed the wolf’s neck and kissed its furry head, “Here’s your reward.”
After speaking, she released her hold and sprawled on the ground, gradually calming her breathing and settling her heart pounding from the exertion.
A short sprint through an obstacle course looked simple but was actually very exhausting.
Moreover, Lin Qianyu had to manage filming from a first-person perspective at the same time.
【…Wow!】
【Sister Lin is amazing! The little wolf is so handsome!】
【I want the video from your phone, Sister Lin! Don’t make me beg you on my knees, sob sob…】
The live-stream camera showed wide shots, not as close-up as Lin Qianyu’s phone footage.
Because of previous incidents where getting too close caused trouble with the animals, the live-stream system had been reprogrammed—unless Lin Qianyu controlled it manually, it wouldn’t get too close. The panoramic view looked good too, but fans always felt—Lin Qianyu’s footage would look better, ahhh!
After being released, the grassland wolf rolled on the ground by itself, then suddenly flipped over to sit up, leaning in to nuzzle Lin Qianyu, “Woof!”
“Hm? What two?” Lin Qianyu didn’t understand at first.
The grassland wolf lowered its head, its wet nose brushing against her cheek, ears twitching, “Woo!”
A kiss!
Earlier she said whether win or lose there would be kisses; they crossed the finish line together and tied for first, so the little wolf should get two kisses, which was only fair.
Realizing this, Lin Qianyu burst out laughing, “Haha… so you understood.”
She thought the complicated logic might have gone over the little wolf’s head.
The little wolf gently raised a paw and carefully tugged at her sleeve, “Woo!”
“Alright, alright, kisses.” Who would refuse a well-behaved little wolf who wanted to kiss?
Lin Qianyu hugged it and kissed twice, not stingy at all, giving one for one.
The grassland wolf twitched its ears, satisfied, and leaned over to rest its head on Lin Qianyu’s jaw.
Lin Qianyu looked up like that, not rushing to get up, her hand repeatedly petting the little furry head.
Around them were trees planted by the rescue station; not sure what species, but the leaves were quite large.
The wind blew, sunlight cast mottled shadows through the leaves.
—The grassland environment island wasn’t very close.
But with convenient transport like planes and yachts, it could take just a few hours to get from the rainforest island to the grassland island.
Pei Feng submitted the report.
This grassland wolf was a key subject of focus; for everything related to the grassland wolf, all complicated approval procedures were simplified.
Thus, on the third day after the report was submitted, the plane to pick up the grassland wolf had already landed at the small airport.
Pei Feng was negotiating with the staff on the grassland island.
Lin Qianyu sat in front of the grassland wolf, holding its paw and rubbing it, “Don’t bite people, and don’t hurt yourself again. Take good care over there on the grassland. I hope the next time we meet, I’ll see a better little wolf than now. Okay?”
“Woo…”
“You’re the best, little wolf. I’ll come find you to play, okay?”
“Woo!” The wolf’s voice was noticeably louder.
“Hello, Miss Lin, I’m Bo Zhao. I’ve heard a lot about you.” The staff approached to greet her.
Lin Qianyu was momentarily taken aback, “Hello.”
Noticing the brief surprise in her eyes, Bo Zhao took the initiative to say, “Your live recordings of ‘Wilderness’ are all uploaded in our work group folder. The leadership asked us to learn from you. Although we work on an isolated island, we don’t miss a single episode of your variety show.”
Lin Qianyu only knew that staff on the rainforest island watched more live streams and wasn’t very familiar with conditions on other islands.
Bo Zhao smiled, “We look forward to you visiting us here. Actually, the animals on our island aren’t fewer than over there. You can also change the environment more often and stay on whichever island you like…”"Bo Zhao! Miss Lin is our intern here, an intern I personally brought in." Pei Feng gave him a sharp look. "Try to poach her in front of me, and watch out—I’ll cut ties with you."
Bo Zhao shrugged it off, "Hah, if I really poach Miss Lin away, then if you cut ties with me, that’d be double the joy."
No need to worry about Lin Qianyu being taken back by Pei Feng again.
Pei Feng: "..."
They looked quite familiar with each other.
Lin Qianyu raised an eyebrow; maybe the frequent interactions between these islands were a good thing.
The takeoff time was approaching.
Bo Zhao said, "Miss Lin, do you have anything else you want to say to him? If not, we’ll prepare to board the plane."
Lin Qianyu thought for a moment, then lowered her voice and whispered a few more instructions close to the little wolf’s ear, then opened the cage.
There was a thick soft cushion at the bottom of the cage, and the space was large enough.
No need to force the grassland wolf to curl up inside; it could stretch out fully.
"Alright, you should go to your future home now." Lin Qianyu closed the cage door, reached in, and petted it.
The grassland wolf lifted its head to nuzzle, then took a few steps closer, its snout stuck between the cage bars.
Lin Qianyu bent down, bringing her face close to its side; the grassland wolf gently touched her, “Woo…”
"Take good care of yourself!"
“Woo!”
Two staff members lifted the cage and loaded it onto the plane.
Lin Qianyu waited below until Bo Zhao also boarded and the cabin door closed.
Pei Feng led her away beyond the plane’s taxiing area, far off, but Lin Qianyu’s gaze never left the plane.
Until the plane taxiied a short distance, then took off, the tail slowly disappearing from sight.
Lin Qianyu felt happy for the little wolf but also a bit wistful. She turned her head and saw Pei Feng staring at her thoughtfully.
That looked a bit scary…
She thought maybe something was on her, so she touched her cheek with the back of her hand and asked, "What’s wrong?"
"You’re not going to work on the grassland island, right?" Pei Feng said seriously. "Bo Zhao is completely unreliable. He’s from my cohort. You can’t trust him."
“...”
Lin Qianyu couldn’t help but laugh hearing him seriously criticizing Bo Zhao. "Got it. Isn’t my internship here certified? Where else would I go?"
Besides, since there was free movement between these islands, there was no requirement to stay on just one island.
"Relax." Lin Qianyu patted his shoulder. "I’m heading back first. How are you getting home? Want me to give you a ride since I’m on the way?"
Only furry creatures ever rode in her rainforest vehicle; she’d never given a person a ride before.
Pei Feng shook his head, "I still have handover work to do here. I’ll be going back later."“Alright. Bye-bye.” Lin Qianyu waved at him and got into the car.
Pressing the accelerator, the rainforest vehicle slowly drove across the grass.
Lin Qianyu didn’t rush back to the cave.
At this time, the furry creatures would be out hunting, probably not home.
Even if she went back, it would be idle, so she might as well use the time before the next episode starts to set up the giant panda’s rain shelter.
Everything needed to build the shelter was in the trunk.
She was already imagining what style it would take.
“Little wolf, later you…” She glanced toward the empty passenger seat, paused, then helplessly rubbed her forehead.
Among the furry ones at home, only the little wolf rode in her car most often because of the frequent trips between the rescue station and home.
Having just sent the little wolf off, it still felt a bit strange.
The car reached the bamboo forest.
Lin Qianyu thought for a moment, then turned on the livestream.
Since returning from the rescue station last time, she hadn’t started a livestream, making the most of her time running around the rainforest with the little wolf.
Once the livestream showed the scene, the viewers quickly surged.
[You still know how to livestream? Do you know how I survived these days without your stream!]
[Lin Jie’s livestream is basically my electronic pickles—without it, I don’t eat or drink.]
[Where’s the little wolf? Today should be the third day, right?]
…
Lin Qianyu took the rain shelter materials out of the car. “Right, I just sent the little wolf onto the plane. I plan to build the shelter now to avoid being too busy later.”
Walking into the bamboo forest, she frowned, “Strange, the giant panda’s not here, and the little panda’s missing too.”
The giant panda could be nearby or even venture a bit farther, but the little panda wouldn’t.
They were timid and didn’t run off even without special supervision.
“There they are.” Seeing the small furry balls nearby, Lin Qianyu went over and asked, “Yangyang, Nuannuan, what are you busy with?”
“Ah!” Nuannuan’s paws were covered in dirt, and when she looked up, her face was also smudged, but that didn’t hide her bright eyes.
“Digging a hole?” Lin Qianyu glanced at the pile of dirt nearby. The soil wasn’t packed firmly, and faintly visible underneath was a partly oxidized, misshapen fruit pit.
Lin Qianyu understood, “They buried the leftover fruit cores and peels.”
“Pretty tidy,” she commented.
Lin Qianyu set down two apples. “I’m going to find a spot. If you get hungry, eat them yourselves.”
The little pandas reached out a paw to pat her as a friendly gesture, but when they did, a puff of dust rose from their paws.
Their little paws looked a bit dirty. Seeing the pandas’ intention, Lin Qianyu didn’t dodge and just stood there quietly, waiting for them to reach out. However, the little panda’s paw retracted halfway, rubbing its belly, scratching twice, then patted Lin Qianyu and looked up at her with a smile, “Wu ah!”
Lin Qianyu was momentarily stunned, but the corners of her mouth couldn’t help lifting. She gently tapped its little head with her fingertips. “Go play.”
After saying that, she picked up the large pile of materials.
Because it was for the giant panda, the most important thing was size.
It had to ensure that when it rained, the rainwater wouldn’t be blown inside.
Just setting up a simple roof and ignoring the sides wouldn’t do.
Lin Qianyu said, “I plan to build it with bamboo and leave the tender bamboo parts I cut down for them.”
Some of the dry parts on top could also be eaten, but naturally, they didn’t taste as good as the tender ones, and they were perfect for support.
The recent rain had already soaked the ground, so the cut bamboo could easily be inserted. To be safe, Lin Qianyu pressed them in deeply.
She also arranged the bamboo crosswise, so even during heavy rain, there was no worry the bamboo would be washed away.
By the time the giant panda returned from hunting, Lin Qianyu had installed bamboo on three sides.
The panda circled in the bamboo forest, obviously coming specifically to find her.
Seeing the bamboo, it was momentarily stunned, tilting its head in confusion—possibly because there hadn’t been such dense bamboo here before, and it was curious about the unfamiliar sight.
“Aw…” It slowly circled around Lin Qianyu and poked its head inside the only open side.
There was no roof yet, so nothing could be seen.
Inside was Lin Qianyu’s backpack.
The zipper was open, and the fruit inside was nearly overflowing.
But after a glance, the giant panda showed no interest in eating it, sat down with a plop, and continued munching on the bamboo it hadn’t finished.
Watching the panda go inside, Lin Qianyu said, “Gung-gung, go further inside. I want to see if the space is big enough.”
The panda obediently moved further in but didn’t stand—just rubbed inside.
It was spacious inside. Even if stones were placed underneath later, it could still fit the giant panda.
Lin Qianyu had also included the little panda’s space in her calculations.
In case of a really heavy storm, they could all stay together and look out for each other.
“Careful, don’t get your feet caught.” Lin Qianyu measured as she planned to make a door—just a simple sliding one.
She added several bamboo poles across near the edge.
Since the bamboo was tall, Lin Qianyu first firmly pushed the bamboo into the ground. After fixing them, she lifted her hand and used a stone to hammer down on the bamboo above.
She left some gaps between the bamboo to make it easier to tie rope later.
While Lin Qianyu was focused on fixing the bamboo, she looked down and found a bamboo piece in front of her—the very one the giant panda had been holding and eating.
“Hm? What’s up?”
“Wu…” The giant panda reached out, handing her the bamboo, and in exchange took the stone from Lin Qianyu’s hand. Then it raised its paw and tapped on it.
Lin Qianyu: “?!”
Comments: 【?!!】
【Ahhh, our Gung-gung is so smart!】
【Just watched for a while and learned?! I’ve watched live streams for so long and still can’t build a shelter. People are no match for pandas.】
【I know this Gung-gung, sat behind me in the college entrance exam, got recommended admission, just here to experience the exam site.】
…
Not only the comments were a bit confused,
Lin Qianyu herself hadn’t expected the giant panda to help her build the bamboo wall.
If it weren’t for the live stream, who would believe this?
The giant panda looked very serious, tapping again and again, and even knew to support the bamboo with its paw afterward—
—because Lin Qianyu had just supported it that way.
However, Lin Qianyu was supporting to ensure the bamboo was inserted vertically into the ground.
The giant panda’s support was purely imitating Lin Qianyu’s action.
“I’ll hold it.” Lin Qianyu went inside and adjusted the bamboo’s angle back. “Okay, tap again like this.”
“Wu!”
With two taps—‘dong, dong’—the bamboo was secured.
Lin Qianyu took another bamboo pole, positioned it, and the giant panda actively stepped forward to help tap.
One holds, one taps, cooperating perfectly.
With the giant panda’s help, the efficiency was significantly higher.
The last few bamboo poles were installed in no time.
“All done, leave the rest to me.” Lin Qianyu returned the bamboo to it. “You must be exhausted. Come eat something. Remember to eat the fruit inside the shelter. It’s all prepared for you and the little pandas.”
【Yeah, yeah, our Gung-gung hasn’t eaten anything for nearly ten minutes now.】
【No wonder, I’m looking a bit hungry and thin just watching.】
Lin Qianyu adjusted the live stream camera to the inside. “You guys watch Gung-gung; I’ll keep building the rain shelter.”
Even if the giant panda was lying down sleeping, everyone would still enjoy watching—let alone when it was awake, well-behaved, and eating.
Before making the door, she laid out the prepared bamboo on the ground.
Lin Qianyu measured and cut off the excess parts, then tied the bamboo together with rope, like making a raft.
The ropes were specially made by the rescue station. From outside they looked like hemp rope, but after cutting open, inside was clearly some unknown material.
What exactly it was, no one knew, but it was very tough and sturdy.According to Pei Feng, this material is waterproof, frost-resistant, heat-resistant, and environmentally friendly, without emitting air pollutants like formaldehyde.
When participating in the program before, Lin Qianyu made these things simply because there were no materials; now with all sorts of auxiliary tools, she handles it with even greater ease.
The finished bamboo door was connected to the overall frame with hinges, making it easy to push and pull.
After hanging it up, Lin Qianyu repeatedly pushed and pulled a few times. “I’ll find a chance to install hinges on the cave door later.”
“Ah!”
“Wuuah!”
...
The little pandas’ cries made Lin Qianyu’s hand pause.
The screams were too pitiful; she didn’t bother checking the door in her hand and immediately turned to run toward the source of the sound.
The giant panda sniffed and calmly ate its bamboo, resting occasionally to switch to an apple.
It showed no sense of urgency about its territory being invaded by a strange fierce beast.
Although the live stream equipment was just adjusted to face the pandas, once Lin Qianyu left its range, the camera automatically refocused on her and followed her.
When Lin Qianyu arrived, she saw the scene of two little pandas facing off with a big tiger.
Though small, the little pandas showed no less spirit, raising their forearms high and crying out, trying to intimidate the tiger.
But...
Lin Qianyu squinted, looking at the little pandas who were still smaller than the tiger’s paws.
If this tiger wasn’t someone she knew—knowing that Da Ju wouldn’t hurt small animals—she would be panicking and rushing over to grab the two little pandas immediately.
The size difference was huge; the little pandas were weaklings, soft targets in the animal kingdom.
Even so, Lin Qianyu hurried a couple of steps, wanting to get the little pandas first before doing anything else.
They were trembling so badly their legs shook.
The footsteps startled the already nervous little pandas.
While Yangyang stared fixedly at the big tiger, it also glanced back once and, upon seeing Lin Qianyu coming, widened its eyes.
It seemed not to understand why Lin Qianyu would come in such a dangerous moment.
Still, it trembled as it sideways stepped two paces backward, acting as if to block Lin Qianyu.
Though scared stiff and shaking all over, it stubbornly stood in front of her.
Nuan Nuan’s fur bristled as she shouted at the big tiger: “Ah!”
This was a provocative cry. Nuan Nuan was ready—once the big tiger got angry, she would turn and run. But the big tiger didn’t react at all, leaving Nuan Nuan momentarily unsure what to do.
【Awooo! Yangyang is so brave!】
【Nuan Nuan is great too! She deliberately made noise to attract Da Ju’s attention, hoping Da Ju would chase her.】
【These two little pandas are so adorable! I really want to scoop them up and cuddle them until bald.】【Hahaha, these two little pandas compared to Da Ju are like two figurines.】
...
“Don’t hit, don’t hit.” Lin Qianyu rushed forward and scooped up one in each hand.
Although they were fully on guard, their attention was on the big tiger; when lifted, they even raised their little paws, still not fully realizing what was happening.
Once held, Lin Qianyu more clearly felt them trembling.
—Who wouldn’t tremble when seeing a tiger?
“All right, all right, it’s okay, don’t be afraid, Da Ju is very friendly.” Lin Qianyu carried the two little pandas on her right arm, gradually approaching the big tiger.
A tiger’s natural intimidation, even if it does nothing and just stands there, is enough to scare.
While soothing them, Lin Qianyu moved forward. “You all smell carefully, isn’t there my scent on him?”
They had been staying in the tent during this time, crowded together with the furry ones; Lin Qianyu was almost reluctant to leave.
Getting close, her scent naturally stuck to the furry ones, and vice versa.
But this scent might require the little pandas to sniff carefully.
“Last time didn’t you also smell other animals on me? Like the leopard, black bear, red-tailed hawk, and also... the big tiger in front of you.”
While speaking, Lin Qianyu stepped up to Da Ju.
The little pandas, distracted, hesitated, their thoughts following Lin Qianyu’s words step by step.
Whether they fully understood or not was unknown, but they were definitely stunned.
Lin Qianyu didn’t rush, gently lifting them higher so they could nestle comfortably in her arms.
Considering the little pandas’ timid nature, she even took off her jacket to cover them.
In an enclosed environment, even knowing the tiger was nearby but not seeing it can reduce fear to some extent.
Lin Qianyu freed a hand to pet the big tiger. “Da Ju, why did you come?”
“Roar...”
Da Ju gave a low growl, stood up, and shook its fur.
Lin Qianyu nodded. Da Ju had chased prey over and detected her scent nearby, so it came to check.
After all, in another animal’s territory, Da Ju was probably concerned about her.
“I’m fine, I’m helping the giant panda build a rain shelter.”
Pausing, thinking of the bamboo shelter inside that had evolved into an almost finished bamboo house, Lin Qianyu hummed, “Maybe I built a house.”
After all, it was for the giant panda to hide from the rain.
Naturally, the more delicate the better.
“Da Ju, come take a look.” The little pandas in her arms were no longer as tense as before.
She guessed right: if they couldn’t see it, they wouldn’t be so scared.Turning around, Lin Qianyu lifted a small slit in her clothes, intending to quietly peek at what the little pandas were doing.
But after lifting it, she saw both little pandas looking up at her in unison.
Not sure if the sound of the clothes rubbing was too loud, or if they had been looking up like that the whole time.
Lin Qianyu rubbed them with her palm, “Looking up like this, doesn’t your neck get tired?”
Nuan Nuan opened her mouth slightly, her eyes fixed on her without blinking, suddenly sensing the tiger’s approach. Facing the impending danger, the little panda instinctively shrank its neck.
However, the big tiger just glanced over.
It seemed... it really didn’t intend to harm them.
Nuan Nuan’s mouth moved slightly, somewhat confused.
This wasn’t how she remembered things.
Seeing their stunned expressions, Lin Qianyu didn’t need to ask to guess what they were thinking.
Give the little pandas some time, and they’ll understand that the big tiger wouldn’t hurt them.
She led the big tiger near the bamboo house.
Getting closer, the crisp chewing sounds of the giant panda eating could be heard clearly.
“Gungun?” Lin Qianyu tilted her head to look from the door. As the territory owner, the giant panda should have known the big tiger entered its territory.
But now, it showed no reaction, leisurely eating its food.
A bit laid-back, with fresh fruit and a relaxed, carefree vibe.
Hmm... wasn’t the giant panda supposed to have a strong territorial awareness?
Facing the big tiger’s approach, the giant panda didn’t even lift an eyelid. When biting near the apple core, the crunching sounds quieted down, carefully nibbling the flesh around the core.
Lin Qianyu went inside, set down the two little pandas in her arms, and said, “Gungun doesn’t show any resistance at all to Da Ju’s approach.”
This was strange, but looking at this Gungun in front of her, it somehow made a bit of sense.
When first met, it was just like this—uncompetitive, honest, and gentle in nature.
Lin Qianyu stroked the giant panda, “I’m leaving these two little pandas with you first, help me take care of them.”
The big tiger could also help take care of the little pandas, but unfortunately, the little pandas were afraid of it.
Counting carefully, the little pandas were quite familiar with the giant panda; placed next to this fellow powerful beast, they should be able to lower their guard.
The bamboo house wasn’t finished yet.
With time still early, she planned to complete the overall outline today, then add more things inside tomorrow to finish the house.
The bamboo house’s roof was made in an inverted triangle shape to guide rainwater to the ground. If it had a flat roof, even with waterproof cloth, water would gather and form puddles, soaking the material.
No matter how good the waterproof cloth is, it would eventually rot if soaked too long.
The roof was completed, made of two different bamboo mats. The edges were cut and extended differently, so when leaning diagonally, they would fit perfectly together.
Everything was going smoothly. But the thing is...
How to put it up.
Lin Qianyu looked up at the bamboo wall, which was a bit taller than herself, because inside the bamboo house they still needed to pile stones to prevent water from soaking in from the ground.
That way, the inside of the bamboo house would be higher than outside.
If the bamboo wall was made too short, and the inside was raised, the giant panda would feel very cramped after going inside.
The space for moving around would also become smaller.
The bamboo wall outside was deliberately made this tall.
Lin Qianyu looked left and right but didn’t seem to find anything to prop herself up on.
Hesitating, her gaze scanned the surroundings, passing over the big tiger lying nearby on the ground licking its fur, then slowly returning.
Lin Qianyu blinked, “Da Ju?”
The big tiger squinted its eyes.
...
...
“Step a little further forward.”
“Right... like this, maybe two steps to the right would be better?”
“Good! Here’s fine!”
Lin Qianyu took off her shoes and stood on the big tiger’s back, holding two finished pieces of roof in her arms.
While measuring how to place them, she directed the big tiger to adjust position.
Before the roof was set down, the three fluffies inside the bamboo house all lifted their heads in unison.
The giant panda was especially shocked, with two dark eye rings unable to hide its surprise.
Lin Qianyu seemed to fly, much taller than before — it was no wonder the giant panda was so stunned.
So shocked that even the little pandas forgot to be afraid. Normally they had to look up at Lin Qianyu, now they almost flipped their heads backwards.
Standing like that was unstable, and she wobbled and fell to the ground.
Luckily, the house hadn’t been tidied up yet, and the floor was covered with fallen bamboo leaves, so the fall didn’t matter.
“Sit still.” Lin Qianyu first placed the other side of the roof slantwise over there, grabbed a protruding bamboo stick, and then put her half of the roof in place.
She used her hands to pinch the middle section bit by bit to fasten the clips.
It looked as simple as putting together a puzzle step-by-step.
But actually, holding this thing empty-handed didn’t feel heavy, but slanting it up here made it especially heavy.
Fitting the front, she also had to be careful not to let the back come apart.
If one clip snapped loose, it would undo all the work at the end.“All done.” The roof had gaps, but after covering it with waterproof fabric, the job was complete.
Lin Qianyu clapped her hands, instinctively reached beside her—earlier, for convenience in installing the roof, the waterproof fabric was placed to her right, so she could grab it easily when needed.
But...
Looking down, she saw the waterproof fabric was a bit far from her hand.
She overlooked the height of standing on the big tiger.
Lin Qianyu squatted down, wrapped her arms around the big tiger’s neck, trying not to get down but directly reach for it.
Wearing shoes or slippers, going down and then back up was too troublesome.
But even stretching out her hand, she couldn’t reach it, so she sighed softly and gave up.
The big tiger seemed to realize something, effortlessly lowered its head to pick up the waterproof fabric with its mouth, then turned its head and handed it into her hand.
Lin Qianyu, just about to jump down, was stunned.
Facing the calm, solemn animal eyes, Lin Qianyu curved her eyes, took the waterproof fabric, first draped it over the roof to free her hands, then half-knelt and hugged the big tiger’s neck, rubbing hard against it happily: “Hey... Da Ju, you’re really thoughtful.”
