Chapter 88
Chapter 88
Pallas’s cats and honey badgers are both short-tempered little animals.
The honey badger, bristling all over with porcupine quills, raised its head indifferently and patted the honeycomb with its paw, then turned and walked off.
There was a kind of swagger to the gesture, as if saying, “Here, eat this,” with great flair.
“Wait, don’t go yet. Let me help you deal with those porcupine quills. It’s dangerous to keep them in,” Lin Qianyu said, startled by how many quills were sticking out of it.
Porcupine quills might not be poisonous, but if left untreated, they could easily become infected, leading to serious illness or even death.
What’s more, if the honey badger started feeling discomfort and tried to pull the quills out itself, it might break them off inside its body, which would make things worse.
Lions and leopards stung by porcupines can, in severe cases, suffer nerve damage.
Honey badgers have skin about five or six millimeters thick on their backs, and with such thick hide, the quills probably didn’t pierce too deeply.
Still, Lin Qianyu said, “You should come with me to the rescue station.”
She didn’t have any tools on hand—pulling the quills out and just applying some wild aloe wouldn’t cut it. If a quill broke off inside, they’d have to go to the hospital anyway, so it was better to go straight there and get it treated properly.
Safer that way.
Better than suffering twice.
The honey badger gave her a defiant look, mouth curled, and said, “Ah?”
“The rescue station is…” Lin Qianyu thought of how to explain it in a way the honey badger might understand, “a place that can help you get rid of the quills.”
As she spoke, she sent a message to Bai Zhao.
With the honey badger full of quills, carrying it was out of the question. Letting Windchaser lead it there wasn’t ideal either.
It would be more stable to wait for Bai Zhao to come by car.
Otherwise, if the quills weren’t in too deep but got jostled on the road and pierced deeper, it would just make things worse.
The honey badger didn’t ask more after hearing that. It didn’t exactly agree, but it didn’t leave either.
Seemed like a silent yes.
At the same time, the honey badger patted the honeycomb again. “Awo!”
“Okay, I’ll eat it in a bit.” Lin Qianyu, after sending her message, picked up the honeycomb. She still had a decent amount of honey at home. “I actually have a lot—do you want to eat first?”
To prove she wasn’t lying, Lin Qianyu tilted the ostrich egg cup holding the honey toward it. “See? It’s all honey.”
The honey badger sniffed the air, catching the scent of honey. But compared to pure honey, it clearly preferred the honeycomb with all its contents. It urged her, “Aah!”
Lin Qianyu chuckled helplessly. The honeycomb still had larvae in it, or maybe bees that didn’t fly away in time. The honey badger munched it down happily, treating it like a sweet protein snack. Lin Qianyu herself really didn’t have any desire to eat that.
To avoid the honey badger shoving the honeycomb into her mouth out of “kindness,” Lin Qianyu decided to explain directly: “Actually, I don’t like eating this.”
The honey badger raised one eyebrow in disbelief. “Awo? Aah awo!”
Impossible!
Wild honey is the best food in the world!
There’s no creature that wouldn’t like it!Lin Qianyu looked at the honey badger earnestly praising the honeycomb and couldn't help but smile. “Yes, it is, but I don’t eat the honeycomb. I’ll drain out the honey—can you help me finish the comb itself?”
For honey badgers, wild honey definitely ranked first on their food list.
So saying it was their favorite was totally reasonable.
Hearing that, the honey badger tilted its head, thought for a moment, and nodded.
As it moved, the porcupine quills on its body all trembled along with it.
Lin Qianyu first placed the honeycomb upside down so the honey could slowly drip out, then invited the honey badger, “Do you want to come in and sit for a bit?”
The honey badger didn’t enter. Instead, it started digging at the ground just beneath the window, clearly busy with something—who knew what it was trying to unearth.
Seeing this, Lin Qianyu reminded it, “Be careful not to poke yourself with the quills.”
“Awo!” the honey badger responded gruffly and kept digging.
Lin Qianyu sliced up a plate of wild fruit and set it by the window. “Come eat some when you’re tired.”
Honey badgers are omnivorous—they eat small mammals, birds, wild fruits, berries, and even venomous snakes sometimes.
So fresh wild fruit like this should appeal to it.
Out in the yard, the wolf pup was playing. Perhaps it had caught wind of an unfamiliar scent, because it started making its way over with curiosity, poking its head around and staring at the quill-covered honey badger.
The pup's eyes lit up at once.
“Awo!”
“No eating.” Lin Qianyu immediately recognized that bark—it meant the wolf pup was ready to pounce and hunt.
She quickly turned her ball of yarn, stretched it out the window, and used the blunt end of a wooden stick to gently press against the pup’s forehead. She said seriously, “That’s not a porcupine. It’s a honey badger. You don’t eat honey badgers—they hit wolves really hard. Don’t get close.”
Wolves sometimes do hunt porcupines. Despite their spines, porcupine meat is tender, tasty, and nutritious.
The pup probably liked eating porcupine meat. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have seen a honey badger covered in porcupine quills and mistaken it for one at first glance.
The honey badger turned its head when it heard the commotion. Seeing Lin Qianyu wasn’t looking at it, it simply went back to digging.
The pup could already understand a few scattered words Lin Qianyu said, but more than that still left it confused. “Awuu?”
Lin Qianyu coaxed the pup, saying, “It got hurt by a porcupine. I’ll catch one for you all next time. For now, come back here. Good boy.”
The first part didn’t quite register, but the pup understood she was calling it back.
With a bark, the wolf pup decisively gave up the tasty prey and trotted back to the door, heading inside.
Lin Qianyu let out a breath of relief. She had been preparing to jump out the window to catch the pup, but now she sat back down and resumed knitting.
If the honey badger and the pup had started fighting, the grassland wolf that stayed behind to watch over the pup would’ve joined in too.
Then it really would’ve been a mess.
A honey badger doesn’t care what kind of animal you are—whether you’re in a pack or alone. If you get close and it feels annoyed, it’ll hit you.
Doesn’t matter if it can win or not. It'll always throw the first punch. The porcupine quills stuck all over its body also served as a natural defense.
The grassland wolf didn’t even know where to bite—if it insisted on fighting, it might end up injuring the inside of its own mouth.
Not worth the loss.
It was better not to create conflict.
The wolf pups squeezed and jostled their way in through the door. The little cheetah was at the front, dashing in first and hooking Lin Qianyu’s leg to start climbing.
This was a game the two cheetah cubs had enjoyed before. The one that had returned from the rescue station quickly learned it too and joined in.
In just a few short days, it could already easily climb from Lin Qianyu’s pants leg up to her thigh. If she was standing, it could even make it all the way to her shoulder by climbing up her clothes.
【Look at all those little piglets. Lin-jie is raising them well.】
【Rude! How could you say that about my fluffballs! They're just a little plump, not overly furry.】
【LMAO girl you roasted them too.】
【Not gonna lie, the wolf pup and cheetah cubs are indeed a little chubby.】
“Chubby? I don’t think so.” Lin Qianyu glanced down. The cubs got three meals a day plus milk formula, sometimes even a late-night snack. And they occasionally had fruit to cleanse their palate...
They didn’t really like fruit, but they loved to crowd around Lin Qianyu when she ate.
Lin Qianyu loved feeding the fluffballs, so no matter what she was eating, she’d always share with them—including fruit.
Even if the wolf pup didn’t like it and just played with the fruit at first, in the end, it would still eat it. Then the next time Lin Qianyu ate, it would come over again.
Endlessly enthusiastic.
Eventually, there would be meat to eat too.
With so many fluffballs in the house going out to hunt, food was never a problem.
Lin Qianyu didn’t worry about any of that. Not only were the adult fluffballs growing well, even the cubs had shiny, healthy coats. That was just how normal cubs were at this age.
A bit of baby fat in kids, a bit of cub-chub in young animals—that was all completely normal. Once they grew up and started practicing hunting, they’d definitely slim down.
Thinking this, Lin Qianyu nodded to herself as if affirming her theory, and said with a serious face, “They’re not fat. This is just temporary. They’ll slim down in time.”
“In winter, wild animals grow thicker fur to resist the cold. They only look fatter—it’s really just fluff.”
【Makes sense. I think I heard some zoologist say the same thing once. But... isn’t it not winter yet?】
【Can’t they grow early? Waiting until winter might be too late!】
【Exactly, it’s perfectly reasonable to prepare several months in advance. Imagine trying to grow a winter coat only after it’s already cold—that’s too rushed!】
Lin Qianyu: “…”
“No, uh, cough…” She cleared her throat, grabbed her ostrich egg water cup, and took a sip.
But the moment she coughed, all the fluffballs in the house lifted their heads to look at her.
For a moment, every gaze in the room landed on her alone.
Lin Qianyu, who had only intended to use the cough to change the subject, paused. Then she choked on her drink mid-sip. “Cough, cough!”This time the coughing fit was worse than before.
“I’m fine, really.” Lin Qianyu raised her hand to rest on the little wolf’s nape as it came over, meeting its concerned gaze. She explained, “I just choked a bit on water.”
As she spoke, she hurriedly took a few more sips to ease her breathing.
Lin Qianyu rubbed her neck. The stabbing pain from the night before was gone—just a slight itch remained.
But it wasn’t a big issue.
Once the coughing stopped, she pressed her lips together, even cleared her throat on purpose to make her voice sound just like usual. “See? All better now.”
The grassland wolf stared at her intently. Lin Qianyu’s eyes curved in a smile as she looked down at the little wolf, amusement flickering in her gaze.
Only after confirming she really wasn’t coughing anymore did the little wolf relax. It jumped onto the table, took the ostrich egg water cup by its strap, and carried it away.
Thinking it was going to fetch her water, Lin Qianyu quickly said, “Little wolf, there’s still water in there.”
“Whuu…”
Okay.
The grassland wolf responded but didn’t stop. It headed straight to the door and poured the water out at the entrance.
Then, with the cup still in its mouth, it went somewhere else. The door closed behind it, and Lin Qianyu didn’t see where it went.
From the shadow passing by the window, it looked like it was heading toward the river in the back.
Well… that still counts as getting water.
It’s always good to drink hot water when sick, so there was always a pot kept warm over the firepit in the yard.
The grassland wolf returned with a fresh cup of water, hung it to heat, then took down the previously warmed one and placed it on Lin Qianyu’s desk.
Lin Qianyu had been watching the little wolf’s busy movements the entire time, and now she smiled and gently wiped its paws.
The little wolf squatted beside her and obediently raised its paws to cooperate—she couldn’t help but find it absolutely adorable.
She rubbed her cheek against it and gave it two kisses. “Thank you for the hard work.”
After getting its paws wiped, the grassland wolf lay down on the bed beside Lin Qianyu’s wooden desk.
Lin Qianyu reached out and patted its head. “Good boy.”
When Lin Qianyu had told the wolf pup and cheetah cubs to go back inside, they had done so without protest. Since she hadn’t said anything more, they just stayed in the house and continued playing.
Even though the door could be pushed open easily, they didn’t try to leave—rolling around and playing indoors seemed to keep them more than entertained.
Hearing the sound of digging outside, the manul jumped onto the table.
Lin Qianyu reached out to rest her hand on its back, smoothing down its fluffed-up fur. “What are you doing up here? Not going to sleep?”
It was supposed to be the manul’s nap time. Though the house wasn’t as dim as a burrow, the corners were shielded with wooden boards to block out the light.
She had assumed it was napping.
She was worried the manul and the honey badger might clash. They were both notoriously bad-tempered little animals.Staring at the honey badger with porcupine quills not far away, the manul widened its eyes—it was clearly seeing this bizarre creature for the first time.
Seeing no reaction from it, Lin Qianyu smoothly scooped the manul onto her lap. “It’s injured. The quills will be removed later and it’ll be fine.”
She smoothed its fur, then picked up her knitting needles again. Just a bit more and she’d be done—she wanted to finish early and not delay it further.
Otherwise, every time she was halfway through and something came up, she had to run off again, and this outfit she was wearing really couldn’t hold up much longer.
If she hadn’t repaired that broken one earlier, she honestly wouldn’t have even one change of clothes left.
But… the colors of the yarn were all over the place, and her stitching wasn’t exactly ideal, so unsurprisingly, it didn’t look great.
She’d just leave it as homewear.
Luckily, the manul was only curious about the honey badger outside. It didn’t try to get closer to check things out.
After hearing Lin Qianyu’s explanation, it looked away and stopped paying attention.
It settled firmly in Lin Qianyu’s lap, licked its fur twice, then suddenly seemed to realize—wait! Lord Manul got hugged by a human again!
Snapping back to its senses, the manul immediately began to struggle, but in its peripheral vision, it caught sight of a fine thread swinging in front of its eyes.
Its pupils changed instantly, and it forgot all about escaping.
Lin Qianyu had just hooked the yarn with her needle when she felt a tug from below—the line went taut. Looking down, she saw the manul’s paw tightly clamped on it, opening and closing its soft pads, trying to drag the string into its mouth.
The manul opened its mouth, baring its teeth, trying hard to bite the thread it couldn’t quite catch. “Awo!”
【Ahhh so cute! My cat loves playing like this too!】
【Let it have it! Just some string! Give it all to it!】
【Linlin, you know… the manul left its mom young and has been with you ever since…】
Somehow, the manul’s claws had snagged the yarn tightly.
Lin Qianyu tugged the other end upward, and the fuzzy paw came up with it—both front paws raised high.
Sensing its own paws were out of control, the manul looked up at her in bewilderment.
Taking advantage of the moment, Lin Qianyu set down her things and cupped the manul’s fluffy little head in both hands. While it was still dazed, she quickly leaned in and kissed it.
Silence. Stillness.
The manul’s eyes widened. It didn’t even care about the yarn anymore, just held its right paw up, utterly lost in confusion.
“Awoo!” Snapping out of it, the manul flailed its paws wildly, jumped onto the table, then to a nearby bed.
Lin Qianyu curled her lips into a smile. “Looks like it’s bristling.”
The manul’s fur was always a mess of fluff, but now it was obvious—its little body was radiating protest.
Lin Qianyu raised a hand and firmly but gently planted it atop the manul’s head, gave it a few side-to-side shakes, and said, “Okay, that’s enough.”
The manul instantly quieted down. As soon as Lin Qianyu removed her hand, it let out another indignant cry, “Awo awo!”
She pressed her hand down again—silence.
That hand on its head was like a volume switch: press down—mute; lift up—full volume.Lin Qianyu found it amusing and rubbed the manul’s head while holding it down. “I’m going to finish sewing this, you play by yourself for a bit.”
After saying that, she slowly lifted her hand again. Sure enough, the manul stayed quiet.
“Oh right, I haven’t given you all names yet,” Lin Qianyu mused. “The white lion and the manul don’t have names yet… and the African wildcat either.”
Though the African wildcat still insisted on its routine—delivering one prey every day on time, then turning to leave immediately.
Lin Qianyu pinched her brow. Her hands, busy with the knitting needle, slowed down. “Naming is so hard.”
“White lion…” As she pondered, she instinctively looked across the shelter roof toward the white lion.
The white lion was curled up in the wooden box, sleeping soundly.
“Tuánzi?”
All curled up, with its fluffy paws tucked in against its belly, it looked just like a round, chubby white dumpling.
“Let’s go with Tuánzi,” Lin Qianyu said softly. “If you don’t object, I’ll take that as agreement.”
At the end, she deliberately stretched out the last word, giving the white lion enough time to respond.
But the big white lion, deep in slumber, didn’t react at all.
Lin Qianyu made the final decision. “Alright then. Tuánzi loves this name.”
【???】
【White Lion: I think I had a nightmare where someone named me Tuánzi.】
【Hahaha that’s terrifying. But Tuánzi sounds pretty cute.】
【Sure, it’s cute! But not at all majestic! It’s soft and squishy like a marshmallow.】
【Be glad it’s not named “Shīshī” or “Báibái.” I hereby declare—I also like the name Tuánzi.】
With the white lion’s name decided, now for the manul and the African wildcat…
Lin Qianyu twirled the end of the yarn between her fingers. “The manul’s fur is always puffed up—how about Yānhuā (‘Firework’)? The African wildcat is just a little tabby, and both names have ‘flower’ in them.”
Two of the three cutest wild cats of the steppe.
So it made sense to use matching characters in their names.
【Whoa. Strange.】
【For a moment I thought I’d wandered into the wrong livestream.】
Lin Qianyu felt pretty pleased with the names she’d come up with, but seeing the comment reaction, she chuckled and said, “Hey, I’ve always been consistently good at naming, okay?”
She raised her hand and gently brushed the manul’s furry neck ruff with a curved fingertip. “What do you think, little Yānhuā?”
The manul blinked. “Awo?”
…
When the rescue station’s vehicle arrived, the sleeping grassland wolf and white lion at home both woke up.
As Bai Zhao stepped out of the vehicle, he came face to face with the white lion coming out of the neighboring house. He was well aware of the incident early this morning when the director’s team had been ‘robbed’ by this white lion. Whenever animals approached the rescue station, staff members—on duty or not—were expected to stay alert.Fortunately, before the white lion could huff a warning, the door to the adjacent room opened first.
Bai Zhao said, “We meet again.”
“Good afternoon,” Lin Qianyu pointed to the right. “The honey badger is over there. It has a lot of porcupine quills stuck in it.”
“Mm, I saw it on the livestream,” Bai Zhao said, picking up the pet carrier. Two thick gloves hung beside it—specifically used for handling small animals to prevent bites if they weren’t sedated and got startled.
Bai Zhao hesitated and said, “But it might not be easy to catch it like this.”
Since the honey badger was also covered in porcupine quills, even though Bai Zhao was skilled at quickly restraining animals, there was still the risk of accidentally pressing into the quills during the struggle.
He wasn’t particularly worried himself—just concerned Lin Qianyu might mind the rough handling, so he gave her a heads-up in advance.
“It’s okay, I’ve already talked it through with it,” Lin Qianyu said as she reached out and took the pet carrier from Bai Zhao. “I can do it.”
Bai Zhao scratched his nose, thinking: That’s the flat-headed bro you’re talking to. Doesn’t seem like the type who’s easy to reason with.
That was the kind of guy who’d sit on a rock, full of porcupine quills, and still calmly eat honey.
Bai Zhao followed at a distance so his presence wouldn’t cause the honey badger to become wary of Lin Qianyu. He stopped in front of the wooden house. “You built this place pretty nicely.”
He glanced around at the house, but also sensed the white lion watching him. He didn’t even dare turn his head—afraid that if he made eye contact, the lion might mistake it for a challenge and pounce.
He still remembered vividly how President Feng had been chased yesterday by the lion. Brutal.
Bai Zhao said, “When the show ends, hook me up with some solar panels, okay? Get me a fridge, freezer, AC—everything.”
The house had plenty of space inside—why not make the most of it?
In this scorching heat, an air-conditioned room was absolutely the best.
Even if it cooled down at night, he could turn on the heater.
And fridges and freezers—those were essentials.
Lin Qianyu raised an eyebrow. “Even without all that, I’d still come here often.”
“Haha,” Bai Zhao laughed, getting called out immediately. “Hey, just thinking—your sanctuary here on Grassland Island shouldn’t have worse amenities than the one in the rainforest, right?”
Lin Qianyu unlocked the pet carrier. “Aren’t you afraid Pei Feng will call you?”
Bai Zhao waved his hand confidently. “I didn’t even bring my phone. Not just that—if he tries to call President Feng to get in touch with me, I won’t get the message either.”
Pei Feng: “Get lost.”
Bai Zhao: “???”
“You…” Bai Zhao froze. “Where are you?! What are you doing in our voice channel?!”
Rescue center workers were required to carry either walkie-talkies or phones on field duty. It was a strict policy. Today, Bai Zhao had deliberately left his phone behind and only used the car’s voice channel for communication. He never expected Pei Feng to tap into their island’s voice system!
Pei Feng sneered coldly.
Bai Zhao: “……”
Punch incoming.Lin Qianyu squatted beside the honey badger who was still diligently digging a hole, holding the carrier. “Come on, Flat-head Bro, let’s go to the rescue center.”
The honey badger lifted its head from the hole, glanced at Lin Qianyu, then looked at the pet carrier beside her.
Lin Qianyu pushed the door open wider and explained, “Get in here—it’ll be more convenient for the ride. There’s a cushion inside, very comfy.”
She patted the soft padding and the thin layer of sponge on top—it was all soft and cozy.
The honey badger shook its paw, said nothing, and lowered its head to walk right in.
Bai Zhao had been watching the livestream, so the carrier he brought was higher and wider than standard ones. With the porcupine quills on the honey badger’s back, it still had enough space to move around without bumping into the sides—it wasn’t cramped at all.
“Lie down properly, don’t move around,” Lin Qianyu said as she shut the door.
The door was mainly to prevent small animals from escaping. The honey badger wouldn’t randomly leap out mid-drive, but Lin Qianyu closed it because the door kept bumping into the carrier while she was walking.
She picked up the honey badger and turned to head back—only to freeze in place. “Tuanzi?”
“Huh?” Bai Zhao was still facing the cabin. “What’s wrong?”
Now that Lin Qianyu had arrived, he no longer had to pretend to be a wooden statue. But the moment he turned around, he also froze.
The backseat door was open, and the white lion had wedged half of its body inside—still trying to squeeze in further.
Bai Zhao: “???”
【Hahaha, Tuanzi has never ridden in a car before—why not catch a ride now!】
【Exactly, let it ride! Let it ride!】
【The staff messed up—driving such a tiny car. Next time bring a van, hear that?】
【Ugh! My majestic white lion! So what if it’s big? The bigger the fluff, the cooler it is to bring around!】
...
“Tuanzi wants to come too?” Lin Qianyu walked up and placed the carrier in the front passenger seat. “But there’s no space for you.”
The white lion tried to turn its head, but the space was too tight—it couldn’t even lift its head.
Bai Zhao considered, then said, “Uh... the back seats can be folded down and connected to the trunk. If we put them down, it should fit.”
Lin Qianyu repeated the words to the white lion.
“Roar!” Tuanzi slowly backed out of the car.
Bai Zhao pressed something from the driver’s seat, then opened the other side door. He folded the back seats and slid them back—flattening the seat and backrest into a cushioned platform.
“There. That works.”
Now that the space was larger, the white lion could lie down inside.
“Let’s go. Time to get in,” Lin Qianyu said, placing the carrier back onto her lap in the front seat. The grassland wolf jumped in too, curling up by her feet.
Two people and three balls of fluff—stuffed the car completely.
Lin Qianyu held the carrier in her arms, supporting it with one hand to keep it steady.
The honey badger didn’t seem bothered by the unfamiliar carrier or the car. It was digging at the cushion with its claws, occasionally tugging it up and playing happily all on its own.—There were more people at the rescue center today than when the thylacine was brought in for an injection last time.
Back then, it was because the thylacine rejected humans, but the honey badger didn’t mind, so quite a few staff members who had seen Lin Qianyu’s livestream—both on-duty and off-duty—came over to join the excitement.
Still, staff don’t enter the clinic without reason.
Inside the clinic, there was only one doctor as usual.
Seeing Lin Qianyu and Bai Zhao enter, the doctor, who was filling a cup with water, pointed to the exam table and said, “Here already? The honey badger that got stabbed by porcupine quills, right? Just put it there.”
Saying that, the doctor set down the cup and turned to get gloves.
Normally, when there wasn’t a multi-party consultation, the doctor preferred not to have too many people in the room and would sometimes ask family members to wait outside.
But seeing the white lion and grassland wolf following Lin Qianyu, as well as Bai Zhao quietly closing the door behind them, the doctor thought about it and decided it wasn’t a big deal. A few extra animals just made the place livelier—no need to chase them out.
Bai Zhao had said earlier there would be a white lion and a grassland wolf, but seeing them in person was still completely different from reading the message and replying with a casual “okay.”
He regretted it instantly and wished he could unsend his reply.
Fortunately, the white lion wasn’t interested in the doctor and instead wandered leisurely around the fairly spacious exam room like it was its own home.
The grassland wolf, on the other hand, followed Lin Qianyu step for step, not sparing a glance at anyone else.
Lin Qianyu opened the carrier and patted the absorbent pad that had been laid down in advance. “Come on, just lie down here for a bit.”
The ride over had been bumpy, and the honey badger had nearly fallen asleep from the swaying.
Hearing Lin Qianyu’s voice, it shook its head. When it came out, a string was still caught on its paw.
The mat inside had been through a lot.
It noticed that aside from Lin Qianyu and the unfamiliar human from the car, there was now an additional stranger in the room.
The honey badger immediately stood up, bared its teeth at the doctor, and raised a paw, clearly ready to fight.
“She’s the doctor, here to remove your quills—don’t bare your teeth,” Lin Qianyu raised her hand to block in front of it. “You’re practically a porcupine now. Lie still for a bit, or you might get hurt again.”
Trying to break up the fight and hold the honey badger down, Lin Qianyu didn’t even know where to start—so she simply blocked its view altogether.
“Oh, wants to fight me, huh?” The doctor clearly wasn’t new to honey badgers and knew full well their brawling nature. She was wearing protective gear and gestured to Lin Qianyu, “Shall I start?”
“Go ahead,” Lin Qianyu nodded and raised a finger to her lips before tapping the honey badger’s nose. “No biting people.”
The honey badger licked its nose and laid down again.
The doctor didn’t start right away; she first used her fingers to part the area around the embedded quills and checked the wounds.
Lin Qianyu asked, “Is it serious?”
“Not too bad. Thanks to its thick hide, none of the quills went in very deep. As long as the eyes are fine, there’s nothing major to worry about. It just looks scary because there are so many.”
Once the doctor had confirmed it was okay, she picked up the tweezers and carefully began removing the quills from the lower areas, following the angle at which they had pierced the skin.
Even if not serious, getting stabbed like this must still hurt.
The honey badger only lifted its head when the first quill was pulled out. After that, it didn’t even blink.
One by one, the porcupine quills were extracted and placed into a tray.Porcupine quills, also known as Suid hair, have many uses—they can be made into high-end fishing floats and decorative crafts, and they also have medicinal value.
But for now, the medicinal value can’t be utilized.
As the quills were pulled out one by one from the honey badger’s body, some of the tips still had blood on them—not much, but visible upon close inspection.
The doctor prescribed medicine to apply all over, and also gave an Elizabethan collar, saying, “Put this around its neck to prevent it from licking off the medicine.”
Before the plastic Elizabethan collar could be put on the honey badger’s neck, it opened its mouth and bit down on it.
“This is to stop you from licking the medicine,” Lin Qianyu said. “Can you smell the medicine on you? You’re not supposed to eat that.”
The honey badger snorted, clearly thinking it wouldn’t be stupid enough to lick the medicine.
The doctor hadn’t finished applying the medicine yet, and Lin Qianyu wasn’t in a rush. Instead, she asked, “If your skin itches and feels uncomfortable, you still won’t lick, right?”
The honey badger tilted its head and resolutely replied, “Ao!” (No!)
Lin Qianyu nodded, “Good. Then you don’t have to wear this. If you lick, then you’re a fool.”
The honey badger: “?”
Comments in the chat: 【?? Reverse psychology?】
【Ao ao ao, crafty humans!】
Lin Qianyu saw the honey badger freeze, seeming to think over her words, so she continued, “Really won’t wear it? What if you can’t resist and before you know it, you’ve already licked it? Then you’d unknowingly become a foolish honey badger.”
“If the lion found out about this…”
“Ah!” The honey badger slapped the table with its paw.
That would be too embarrassing for the honey badger!
Lin Qianyu checked the Elizabethan collar’s clasps, carefully picking the right size. “You only need to wear this for a few hours. When the time’s up, we take it off.”
One round of medicine application is enough. The honey badger’s recovery ability is no joke.
After going around once, the honey badger hadn’t fully understood or analyzed what was said, but when Lin Qianyu opened her hand, it raised its head and followed her.
Lin Qianyu quickly fastened the Elizabethan collar.
At this moment, the doctor finished applying medicine to the honey badger’s wounds and turned to its head.
When a hand suddenly reached out from the edge of the collar, the honey badger didn’t hesitate to open its mouth and “Ao!” (bite!).
It bit at empty air—Lin Qianyu’s hand was resting under its jaw.
“Let me handle the wounds on your head.” The hair there was short, so Lin Qianyu could clearly see where it was injured.
The doctor didn’t refuse and handed her the ointment and cotton swabs.
The honey badger strained to look upward, but its vision could only catch the small wooden stick under the cotton swab.
Being stabbed by porcupine quills really hurt. The ointment felt cool and soothing when applied, which helped relieve the sting at the wound.
Lin Qianyu applied a thick layer of ointment and tried to smooth it out evenly. “All done.”The honey badger’s back of the head felt cool, and upon hearing Lin Qianyu’s words, it instinctively wanted to raise its paw to touch it.
Lin Qianyu gently said, “Silly honey badger…”
“Ah?!” The honey badger stubbornly raised its head, as if challenging her to a fight.
Lin Qianyu suppressed a laugh and said, “If you get the medicine on your paw and then lick your paw, won’t you end up eating the medicine?”
She had just said that anyone who licked the applied ointment was a silly honey badger.
The honey badger paused, put down its paw, and really didn’t touch its head again.
The doctor said, “Try not to get it wet when you go back. Once the ointment is absorbed, it will be fine.”
Since the honey badger swims in water, it still needs to be careful.
Lin Qianyu nodded and replied, “Okay, thank you, doctor.”
All the cotton inside the damaged pad had been pulled out.
Bai Zhao took out the broken pad from the pet carrier and replaced it with a new one. “Come on, the zebra isn’t here, I’ll take you back.”
The honey badger, now without quills, could run back by itself with no problem.
But since the zebra wasn’t here, walking back such a long distance alone would take Lin Qianyu quite some time.
The honey badger had been in the carrier before, so now that its quills were removed, the same carrier felt much bigger—rolling around inside was no problem.
Lin Qianyu petted the little wolf’s head, then turned to the white lion who was pawing at the cabinet and curiously staring at the bottles inside. She said, “Tuanzi? We’re leaving.”
The white lion glanced over, then got down from the cabinet.
The cabinet, which had tilted backward when stepped on, settled back down after the white lion left, causing the medicine inside to rattle with a ‘thud.’
The white lion walked over to Lin Qianyu and rubbed against her, then turned and glanced at Bai Zhao.
Bai Zhao, who had been standing behind Lin Qianyu, immediately took three steps back to create some distance.
Only then was the white lion satisfied.
Not noticing the subtle eye signals between them, Lin Qianyu picked up the pet carrier and said, “Let’s go.”
Bai Zhao: “Okay.”
They took the elevator down to the first floor.
With a ‘ding,’ the elevator doors opened.
Before stepping out, they heard the sound of something hard scraping against something else.
Bai Zhao, unfazed, said, “There’s a lynx outside. It’s here for food, no ill intent. Try not to cause any conflict.”
This was more directed at the white lion and the wolf.
Because generally, no one would actively provoke a lynx or cause conflict with it.
But animals often have inexplicable hostility toward other animals. Meeting usually involves inspection, provocation, hissing, and ultimately fighting—this has become the typical process of confrontations upon meeting.Lin Qianyu asked, “Is the lynx also being cared for at the hospital?”
The lynx was right on the first floor, in the hallway that everyone had to pass through to go out.
Almost as soon as you stepped out of the elevator and turned your head, you could see it.
The lynx, about half a person tall on all fours, was holding something in its mouth, standing in front of the door, scratching at it with its front paws.
[“Goodness, if it scratched me like that, I’d be all bruised.”]
[“Not necessarily, but you might have scratches here and there.”]
[“Lynx: Hello, delivery person, I’m here to pick up the order.”]
[“That’s so fierce? If it scratched my door like that, I’d have to rush out and beat it to death.”]
[“That’s not scratching the door, it’s clearly trying to open a can.”]
...
As Lin Qianyu spotted the lynx, the lynx also noticed the humans not far away.
“What it’s holding in its mouth… is that a prairie dog?”
Also known as a groundhog, it’s a lively little creature good at running and jumping.
They don’t seem to be on the lynx’s usual menu, right?
Especially since… two more lynxes appeared afterward, also holding prairie dogs whose fate was unknown.
Lynxes are typically solitary animals, so why are so many gathered together here, and all coming to the rescue station?
What’s going on?
Lin Qianyu: “???”
Though puzzled, she still put a hand on the white lion to prevent it from rushing out to fight the lynxes.
Bai Zhao helplessly explained, “Actually, it was an accident. One of my colleagues saw a lynx holding a prairie dog, and the prairie dog was crying—it looked pitiful. So my colleague felt sorry and put a bunch of meat snacks on the ground.”
“The thought was that with food available, the lynx would eat that instead of the prairie dog.”
After placing the snacks, the colleague didn’t leave right away but hid nearby to watch.
“The meat snacks were indeed more attractive than the prairie dog, so the lynx dropped the prairie dog and finished the meat.”
Up to that point, it seemed like a win-win situation.
But the problem was…
Bai Zhao sighed, looking pale. “The next day, three lynxes showed up at the rescue station gate, each holding a prairie dog.”
That scene—no one dared even imagine.
The old man guarding the gate in the morning saw it and thought they were coming to ambush him; he nearly had a heart attack.
Lin Qianyu: “…”
[“Hahaha, prairie dog: Who put up the bounty?”][Lynx isn’t really catching prairie dogs, it’s clearly catching tasty meat snacks.]
[First prairie dog: If you don’t kill me, do you want to wipe out my whole clan?]
After dealing with this, Bai Zhao also felt very troubled. “When my colleague put down the food, he clearly told the lynxes through the door not to catch prairie dogs next time. They can come as they please and eat the meat—the rescue station can afford it.”
“After they left, my colleague also released the prairie dogs. But on the third and fourth days, prairie dogs kept getting caught, and more lynxes kept showing up.”
Bai Zhao looked at the lynxes scratching the door in the corridor. “What you’re seeing now is still a small number.”
He even suspected that because of the meat snacks, all the lynxes on the island knew they could trade prairie dogs for food at the rescue station.
The prairie dogs caught by the lynxes felt utterly hopeless.
“If prairie dogs keep getting caught repeatedly…” Lin Qianyu narrowed her eyes, feeling how tragic that was.
“Hey, I thought the same. Later when releasing them, we marked their ears with washable ink. But the next day, they were caught again.”
Bai Zhao clapped his hands, “When they were brought over, they were still chewing something, totally calm.”
They seemed like seasoned veterans who had been caught many times.
They knew they’d be released again soon, so they didn’t even bother to be afraid.
Also, since the first few times weren’t marked, Bai Zhao didn’t know exactly how many times a prairie dog had been caught, but since marking began, at least three times.
Bai Zhao chuckled, “Now the prairie dogs, when they meet predators, don’t hide—they go find the lynxes. The predators get scared off, the prairie dogs get carried to the rescue station, eat a meal, and then get released.”
It’s almost become a complete supply chain.
Only the rescue station gets hurt.
“Ha ha…” Lin Qianyu couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
[Prairie dog: From resistance to submission—who doesn’t like a free meal?]
[Exactly, and it’s in a quiet, comfortable environment, eating clean, balanced prairie dog food. I’d like that too.]
[Predators: I really thank you all.]
[Hey, someone notify the predators so they can come eat here too.]
It sounds like a feast.
Quite lively.
Lin Qianyu laughed until her stomach hurt.
She composed herself, still smiling, and asked, “What if we told the lynxes—don’t catch prairie dogs, just come eat the meat? But if prairie dogs like this so much, and lynxes don’t bring them, will they come on their own?”
For relatively weak small animals on the grassland, finally finding a place with good food and safety might come with the price of humans petting them like a massage, and after eating well, lying down comfortably—that’s not bad.
Bai Zhao thought for a moment. “Tell them, or else I’m afraid the prairie dogs’ predators won’t find food and starve. We don’t want the island’s food chain to break here.”
The butterfly effect can be quite scary.
Some things you don’t care about or think are unimportant can end up causing serious consequences.
Even knowing predators have other foods besides prairie dogs, what if—what if things continue like this? Prairie dogs increase, predators decrease. If something really happens, they’ll have to bring in animals from outside.
Also, living in such a very comfortable environment, prairie dogs will lose their awareness of outside dangers. The rescue station can take care of them, but they can’t keep them forever.
By the time they decide to remove the prairie dogs later, it will be too late.
Bai Zhao still doesn’t want to take this risk—if in ten or so years they get held responsible for this, even dogs would shake their heads and say, “Too bad.”
Lin Qianyu nodded, “Alright, I’ll go talk to them.”
She soothed the white lion and the steppe wolf by petting their fur, “You two wait here, don’t follow me.”
The closer the distance, the easier conflicts break out.
After calming the two at home, Lin Qianyu stepped forward.
But just as she arrived and before she could speak, the lynx opposite made the first move.
The lynx at the front stepped down from the door, squinting its eyes, “Wooaah…”
The white lion.
Lin Qianyu’s greeting stuck in her throat: “…”
Should she be relieved it didn’t say “bald one”?
She sighed, “Yes, I am the white lion.”
[Hmm hmm hmm???]
[Hahaha, the lynx also calls Sister Lin the white lion?]
[I witnessed Sister Lin go from denial to giving up, this is hilarious. Next time they see that lion pride, they’ll probably chase the lion king to beat him up.]
…
“Let’s not talk about that for now,” Lin Qianyu got straight to the main issue, “If you like eating the meat here, you can come directly, no need to bring prairie dogs. But the meat given here will be very little—you can’t get full just from this meat, you still need to hunt.”
The lynx growled low.
The door, which the lynx had been scratching for a while, quietly opened a small crack.
Sensing movement here, the lynx immediately stood up again, slapped its front paws upward and then pressed down, quickly pushing the door open inward.
“Ah!”
The staff inside couldn’t dodge in time and got slammed against the wall by the door.
Fortunately, there was a triangular space between the door and the wall; otherwise, this hit could have been deadly or at least seriously injuring.
A trembling young man poked his hand out, “S-Sister Lin, hello, my name is Yin Youran, one of the new interns in this batch.”
His voice sounded almost like crying.
Lin Qianyu didn’t see him but still responded, “Hello.” Pausing, she added, “I’m also a new intern, we’re from the same batch.”
“…Ah?” Yin Youran hid behind the door, dazed. Watching Lin Qianyu’s calm composure facing fierce beasts on the livestream, he had thought she was a senior at the rescue station.
After all, even if you can talk to animals, you still need courage to face them directly. If it were someone timid, standing in front of those animals and getting roared at by lions or tigers, they’d be so scared they wouldn’t dare move, probably even forgetting how to breathe when told to open their mouth and talk.
But Lin Qianyu looked completely at ease from the very first episode of the livestream.
Yin Youran wasn’t actually interested in this kind of livestream variety show—it was only after starting work that his boss forced him to stay up late cramming for it.
Just now, when the lynx blocked the door, he was still hiding inside watching the livestream.
The main concern was that the feeding situation might cause dangerous problems later, so Yin Youran cut things short and simply stopped feeding when the lynx came.
He just waited for the lynx to leave on its own.
If he hadn’t known Lin Qianyu was outside, there was no way he would have opened the door.
Facing so many lynxes, he was scared too!
The first time feeding, he put the meat behind iron bars—it wasn’t feeding face to face.
Later, when the lynx came knocking, Yin Youran was always nervous, putting down food and running away immediately, never interacting.
Who knows if the lynx might suddenly think the meat was too salty or bland today and then bite him for a change of taste?
Bai Zhao, seeing them chatting through the door, said, “Yin Youran, come out, how can we not see you?”
“I…” Yin Youran stretched his hand out, only then realizing the door opened inward, so he was just pushing his hand through the door gap, invisible to those outside.
He tried to open the door, but the lynx was waiting right there; he said in a trembling voice, “I can’t get out.”
Bai Zhao sighed looking at the lynxes.
Lin Qianyu thought for a moment, “You all come over first, let’s talk more carefully about the snacks?”
The lynx had their paws pressing down on the prairie dog, obviously afraid their bargaining chip for meat snacks would escape.
—Though the prairie dog didn’t seem to have any intention of running away.
[That prairie dog’s expression cracks me up.]
[Prairie dog: Still not done talking? Why add another step today? Gotta feed me more then, I’m exhausted!]
Lin Qianyu saw they weren’t budging. These smart big cats who had learned to trade snacks with humans didn’t easily trust just a few words from her.
Not seeing the bargaining chips, Lin Qianyu turned to Bai Zhao, “Get me a batch of the meat snacks we usually give them.”
“Okay, one moment.” Bai Zhao immediately headed to the warehouse.
As for Yin Youran behind the door…
Lin Qianyu turned to the white lion, “Tuanzi?”
…
The pressure on the door was so firm it was pressed tightly against the wall.
Yin Youran was curled up in the only safe triangular spot, not daring to stand straight, with his left shoulder against the wall and right shoulder against the door panel, wedged tightly—he might have hit it hard because it was already numb.
No one knew how long it had been; Yin Youran kept thinking about when Bai Zhao would bring the meat snacks back or, if needed, come inside because he had plenty on his desk.
Lost in thought, randomly guessing, suddenly he felt the door panel pressing on him loosen.Yin Youran tried moving his shoulder, and the door panel immediately creaked open outward.
Open, open?
Yin Youran cautiously peeked out— the lynx was gone!?
Joy quickly spread across his face, but the next moment, his smiling mouth suddenly froze.
The white lion gave a sideways glance, expressionless, locking eyes with him.
His fingers, frozen on the door panel, slowly pulled the door shut again. Yin Youran hid inside, pretending nothing had happened.
[LOL — this is way too scared!]
[After being blocked by the lynx and then suddenly confronted by the white lion’s face, it’s hard not to be scared.]
[This poor lynx is a longtime meal ticket, scared so much his face turned pale.]
Lin Qianyu entered behind the white lion.
Lynxes don’t attack in packs; they leave to live alone before adulthood. Even when facing the white lion, they won’t unite with others of their kind.
So after assessing the pros and cons of fighting the white lions, they chose to retreat, giving up this area.
Although there were many lynxes, there were also two white lions.
Even if one looked unimpressive, it was still a lion.
If two lions fought them, the lynxes would definitely lose.
No matter how you look at it, lynxes wouldn’t have the advantage.
Especially with the presence of the prairie wolf.
A lynx can fight a prairie wolf one-on-one, but obviously, the white lions wouldn’t give them that chance.
“Yin Youran?” Lin Qianyu opened the door. “Why haven’t you come out?”
“Whi-whi-white lion…”
“No need to be afraid, Tuanzi helped you out of trouble.” Lin Qianyu easily opened the door beneath Yin Youran’s white-knuckled grip, then saw Bai Zhao approaching carrying a large burlap sack. She said, “Come out, Bai Zhao is back too.”
There were many lynxes and they needed enough food. Bringing just one or two small bags would easily cause lynxes to fight over insufficient food.
Bai Zhao didn’t want to make multiple trips, so he brought a whole unopened big bag.
“Lin Jie, these are the snacks. See how you want to use them.” Bai Zhao stretched his arms.
“Okay.” Lin Qianyu went out and called, “Tuanzi, come.”
The white lion was looking at the ground where Lin Qianyu’s phone lay. Hearing her voice, it abandoned the phone streaming live and turned to walk toward her.
The prairie wolf sniffed the snacks. The honey badger opened its own crate, clawed open the meat snack packaging, tore a hole, and ate the pieces that fell out.
Having watched Lin Qianyu open and close the door twice, the lock was easy for the honey badger to operate.
Lin Qianyu saw it eating messily; before swallowing the food in its mouth, its paws were already grabbing new pieces. “What kind of meat is this, it’s so popular with animals.”
Some pet foods sold outside add lots of flavor enhancers to attract animals. There are also quite a few special attractants. To humans, they smell like normal meat aroma, but animals eat greedily, one bite after another.
Bai Zhao said, “It’s a mix of three kinds of minced meat, with honey added inside. The honey probably attracts the honey badger the most.”
Like the black bear, which loves honey so much that it likes all foods with honey without exception.
Guessing Lin Qianyu’s concerns, Bai Zhao smiled, “Don’t worry, our rescue center’s purchasing isn’t decided by one person. We have a batch responsibility system, involving many people. If there were any bad ingredients or attractants, it would be found out immediately.”
Bai Zhao also brought a stack of disposable bowls, “Use these to distribute to the lynxes.”
The rescue center often has small animals coming by. Although they can’t interfere with natural development, when you see cute furry little animals, you always want to figure out what you can feed them.
To prevent staff from casually putting food on the ground, where leftovers might go uneaten, rot, smell bad, and be impossible to clean up, they specially arranged these biodegradable disposable bowls.
Placed on the ground, the white bowls are quite noticeable. If a staff member forgets, the patrolling staff will see and pick them up.
“Okay.” Lin Qianyu made the bag’s opening bigger and filled several bowls full, piling the food up like a small mountain.
The snacks were arranged in a row in the middle. Lin Qianyu stepped back a few steps, squatted down, and said, “Once these are eaten, the rescue center will no longer provide snacks.”
The lynx, standing on the prairie dog, didn’t come to eat immediately but first bargained with Lin Qianyu, “Howl…”
Lin Qianyu raised a finger and shook it side to side, “Prairie dogs aren’t universal currency on the grassland.”
[Universal currency? I only know devil rays are the ocean’s universal currency.]
[Whether universal or not, first see if the prairie dog is still alive. I think it’s starting to want prairie dog food.]
[Looks like the prairie dog really wants to be universal, haha.]
…
Lin Qianyu’s words were obviously incomprehensible to the lynxes.
Helpless, Lin Qianyu changed her approach: “It’s against regulations for the rescue center to provide you stable food long-term.”
That was true, written in the employee handbook.
At first, Yin Youran didn’t plan to provide stable food, only helping when encountering them, not letting the lynxes starve or the prairie dogs die in lynx mouths.
Actually a win-win.
But from the second day, when more lynxes brought prairie dogs to the rescue station, things changed.
Like a runaway horse, heading wildly toward rule-breaking.
“The grassland has rich resources and it’s not the dry season,” Lin Qianyu paused and said, “This is an island. Even in the dry season, migrating animals can’t leave the island; they only move to different spots.”
In other words, they will never lack food.
“Hunting themselves, they get fresh food. These processed meats aren’t as tasty as fresh ones.”
The lynx nudged the motionless prairie dog and then carried it over.
Lin Qianyu saw the prairie dog was still breathing; it probably wasn’t fainted—after all, it still had eyes open when carried before, and now isn’t the right time to faint.
It felt more like playing dead or… because it had been caught many times, knew it would be released and even get a tasty dinner, so even facing the lynx, it was relaxed—so relaxed it closed its eyes and slept soundly.
No matter how you look at it, this prairie dog has a very big heart.Able to sleep so soundly like this.
The lynx squatted down, “Howl…”
“No trade.” Lin Qianyu’s finger pointed from the first bowl all the way to the last, repeating, “Once these are finished, there won’t be any more.”
The lynx bared its teeth.
Lin Qianyu leaned against the white lion, running her hand over the grassland wolf’s fur. Facing the lynx’s impatience, she remained calm, “Next time you come, we’ll sedate you with an injection and send you back.”
There seemed to be a certain keyword in this sentence that made the lynx pause. The white lion’s sideways glance made it fall silent for a moment, then it licked its lips and, although reluctant, reluctantly agreed, “Wooh!”
Hearing this conversation come to an end.
The prairie dog, originally sleeping, went from blinking confusedly at being woken up to wide-eyed shock, “Squeak?! Chirp chirp, chirp?!”
It seemed that only now did the prairie dog realize what had just happened.
It jumped over several steps to Lin Qianyu’s front, stood up fiercely, pointing with its paws, then turned and slapped the floor, making a “pa pa” sound, then turned its head and pointed at the lynx, “Chirp chirp, chirp?!”
[Prairie dog: Cutting off the mouse’s food path is like killing the mouse’s parents!]
[Huh? What are you saying? My prairie dog is furious.]
[No need to translate that line, it’s very rude.]
[Haha, the rescue station agrees, the lynx agrees, but the prairie dog disagrees.]
Makes sense.
If the prairie dog isn’t caught by the lynx, where else could it find a place that’s safe and has plenty of delicious food?
Being chased halfway through a meal is terrifying.
Now, someone wants to cancel its benefits!
How can the prairie dog stand for that!
“Squeak, chirp chirp, squeak!” The prairie dog shouted angrily, running while yelling, occasionally tripping and rolling in front of Lin Qianyu. It was clearly very upset.
The grassland wolf casually glanced at it. The noisy prairie dog suddenly seemed to have its throat choked.
Silence, stiff and quiet.
The grassland wolf took a step toward it.
The prairie dog immediately shouted again: “Squeak squeak!”
Agreed!
Hearing this, the grassland wolf withdrew its paw.
[Impressive, but only lasts three seconds.]
[Wow, didn’t expect the prairie dog’s bottom line to be so flexible.]
The prairie dog, whose bottom line was flexible but lost its daily meal, grumpily rubbed its belly, grabbed a piece of meat snack, bit into it, paused, then lowered its head and followed to eat.
“Alright, today’s mission ends here.” Lin Qianyu sat up, patted her clothes, and turned to Bai Zhao, saying, “Our talk went very smoothly.”Bai Zhao: "......"
What a ‘talk’ that was.
Basically, it was me telling you to listen, and if you don’t, I’ll have the white lion and grassland wolf beat you up. If you don’t want to get beaten, you have to listen.
How is this really any different from just fighting?
Hmm... maybe it sounds a bit more civilized.
There were still plenty of meat snacks in the bag. Lin Qianyu served a bowl each to the grassland wolf and the white lion, and the honey badger happily eating on top of the bag got a bowl of its own.
“Bai! Bai!”
Just after putting things down and before Lin Qianyu could sit, a foreigner rushed in hurriedly, looking flustered and out of breath, face flushed red.
While running, he kept pointing outside the door, seemingly wanting to say something, but he was so out of breath he couldn’t get a word out.
Bai Zhao grew anxious, walked a few steps toward the door, and asked, “What’s wrong?”
The foreigner was still trying to catch his breath.
Bai Zhao stood at the door, looking at the wolf pack in the yard, as well as the thylacine and leopard standing among them, falling into silence.
The next moment, he turned without hesitation, “Lin Jie, someone’s looking for you.”
