Chapter 32

Yan Huai’s voice was very distinctive, especially that “baby,” like it was finely ground out between his teeth.

Cheng Nuo and Jiang Jingyue had a good relationship with He Wei, and it wasn’t like they had never called her “baby” before, but the way those two called her was completely the same as Yan Huai’s.

When he said those two words, he softened the ending tone and then lifted it slightly. She didn’t know if it was the influence of a previous life, but He Wei always felt a slight tingling sensation on her scalp whenever she heard those two words.

Her breathing hitched, and she subconsciously lifted her eyelids to look over.

Yan Huai was still in a half-lowered posture. His gaze had just lifted from that box of contraceptive pills. The contours of his eyes were deep; when he looked at her, his double eyelids sank in, making his eyes even more profound.

That same gaze again.

He Wei didn’t like such overly aggressive eyes. This kind of gaze made her feel as if she was stripped bare in front of him, with nowhere to hide.

She lowered her eyes again and reached out to take the box of medicine from his hand. “I’m not planning to do anything.”

The two of them were in a deadlock at the hospital entrance for more than half a minute. Many people came and went nearby, some finding it strange and glancing over curiously.

More than ten meters behind them was the road; vehicles passed by, horns sounding one after another.

He Wei gripped the corner of the medicine box tightly and tried to pull her hand back.

Yan Huai didn’t let go.

He Wei frowned. “Let go.”

Just then, Yan Chen’s voice came from behind, “Hehe, are you okay?”

Earlier in the lobby, he had seen He Wei bump into someone, but the doctor had just kept him back to say a few words. Yan Chen originally thought that when he came out, he wouldn’t see He Wei anymore, but unexpectedly, a few minutes later, she was still squatting on the ground picking things up.

The man was half-squatting opposite her, most of his face hidden by her.

Yan Chen’s mind was entirely on He Wei, not paying the slightest attention to that man. Only when he walked closer did he pause in shock. “…Brother?”

He Wei’s fingers stiffened slightly.

Yan Huai lowered his eyes. Noticing her barely perceptible movement, he narrowed his eyes slightly and ignored Yan Chen. “Speak.”

That sentence was directed at He Wei.

His tone wasn’t harsh, just carried a kind of gentle dominance that didn’t allow her to refute or resist.

He Wei had originally wanted to explain, but as soon as Yan Huai spoke, she inexplicably felt wronged after hearing it. She muttered, “It has nothing to do with you.”

Both of their voices were extremely low; Yan Chen was only two or three steps away and couldn’t hear what they were saying at all.

He thought Yan Huai was apologizing to He Wei for bumping into her.

He Wei didn’t bother to care what he thought. She tightened her fingers and forcefully pulled the medicine box back.

She was still angry and didn’t control her strength properly. The hard paper box accidentally left a red mark on Yan Huai’s index finger.

It didn’t bleed, but because his fingers were so pale, the red mark looked especially glaring.

He Wei pressed her lips together. Something seemed to tug at her heart. She quickly looked away, tossed the box into the plastic bag, and stood up.

Because she had been squatting for too long and stood up too suddenly, causing temporary lack of blood flow to the brain, her vision went white for a moment and her body swayed. Luckily, Yan Chen reacted quickly and supported her before she fell.

She heard Yan Chen’s voice—gentle and refined. Although pleasant, to He Wei it always felt fake and pretentious.

There wasn’t even the slightest trace of sincerity in this scumbag male lead.

He Wei felt a surge of physiological disgust at the thought that the hand currently gripping her forearm had no idea how many women it had touched. She frowned and forcefully pulled her arm out of Yan Chen’s grip. “You guys can keep talking. I won’t disturb you.”

“Hehe…”

Yan Chen was about to call her back again when a male voice from the side interrupted, “Feeling unwell?”

Yan Chen immediately lost the thought of calling He Wei back. His expression changed several times. “Not really… just haven’t had a physical exam in a long time.”

He Wei tugged at the corner of her lips and quickly walked to the intersection to wait for the traffic light to change.

After putting some distance between them, the sound of conversation behind her gradually faded away.

The traffic light took forty seconds. After it turned, He Wei crossed the street and went into a dessert shop opposite the hospital to buy a slice of mousse cake.

Probably no girl doesn’t like sweets.

It’s just that He Wei’s profession was special; she often had to deliberately control her weight. She had to step on the scale several times a day—neither too high nor too low.

Her weight had dropped a bit these past few days, so eating a bit of dessert appropriately wasn’t a problem.

She walked around the dessert shop once. When she took her items to the front desk to pay, just as she took out her wallet, someone beside her handed over a hundred-yuan bill.

He Wei didn’t even need to turn her head to look. Just from that hand, she already recognized who it was.

It was Yan Huai.

Still feeling sulky, He Wei didn’t even want the cake anymore. She turned around and left.

From behind, the cashier called out loudly, “Sir, your change…”

He Wei heard that and quickened her steps even more. But before she could reach the roadside, the man behind her called out, “Not taking your things anymore?”

“…”

It wasn’t even something she bought.

He Wei ignored him. Just as she was about to keep walking forward, her wrist was gently held.

“I’ll take you back,” he said.

“No need…”

“I even left my own biological younger sister at the hospital. He Wei, be good.” Yan Zhen said.

He Wei: “…”

She froze for just a moment, and the man’s hand slid down from her wrist, directly taking her left hand.

He Wei’s anger eased a bit. She pulled her hand back slightly. “You can’t hold my hand in public…”

They were in a public place right now.

Although He Wei was fully disguised, she probably wasn’t at the level where paparazzi would specifically track her—but she still wasn’t at ease.

If a paparazzi suddenly appeared and started snapping photos of them, the rumor that she was being kept by a benefactor would probably hit the headlines tomorrow.

And the buzz would definitely be stirred up by Yan Huai.

Yan Huai saw through her little thoughts at a glance. “No one’s taking pictures.”

His voice was low, and if you listened closely, it was slightly hoarse. He Wei looked up at him, originally wanting to ask if he was catching a cold, but before she could say it, he turned his head slightly and coughed.

…He really was catching a cold.

He Wei originally thought she was the only one with a poor constitution.

In that case, she actually felt a lot more balanced in her heart.

Yan Huai’s car was parked in a temporary parking space, just a few steps away.

After He Wei got in the car and fastened her seatbelt, she suddenly remembered Song Ying and turned to ask Yan Huai, “What happened to your younger sister?”

“Yesterday, when she was taking photos on a ladder, she accidentally fell.”

He Wei was startled. “Is it serious?”

“Not really.”

He Wei: “…”

What did “not really” even mean?

As if he knew she was curious, Yan Huai added, “A mild fracture.”

“Then will she be unhap—”

Before she could finish, He Wei stopped herself.

“What is it?”

He Wei didn’t say anything.

She actually wanted to ask whether Yan Huai not going to see Song Ying, and instead coming to take her home, would make Song Ying unhappy—but the words reached her lips, and she couldn’t bring herself to say them.

It felt too ambiguous, too sentimental.

He Wei lowered her head and fiddled with her fingers, her gaze falling back onto the bag containing her medicine.

Yan Huai also glanced sideways at it.

Then his gaze moved upward, landing on He Wei’s face.

This girl seemed a bit off today.

Ever since she bumped into him earlier, she had not wanted to talk to him. Only in the last few minutes had she finally seemed a bit better.

Yan Huai knew what she had wanted to ask just now.

Although He Wei was an actress, her emotional control outside of acting wasn’t very good. Whatever she wanted to say was almost always written clearly on her face.

Yan Huai looked at the girl with her eyes lowered. She was too quiet at this moment, and when he spoke, he subconsciously softened his voice. “No.” Yan Ying would be happier if he came to find He Wei earlier.

He Wei looked up and turned to him.

“Yan Ying won’t be unhappy.”

Only then did He Wei feel slightly relieved.

The next second, she heard Yan Huai ask, “You still like Yan Chen, don’t you?”

He Wei froze.

Before she could respond, Yan Huai asked again, “Was the medicine also bought because of him?”

His tone was very flat—so calm that not even a hint of emotion could be heard—but He Wei lowered her gaze and caught sight of his fingers tightening little by little on the steering wheel.

He was restraining something.

That breath in He Wei’s chest finally eased completely.

“…No.” He Wei shook her head. Since it was a rather private female topic, her ears turned slightly hot when she explained, “I have menstrual irregularities… these are medicines the doctor prescribed.”

Yan Huai lifted his eyes.

“I didn’t intend to do that kind of thing with him…”

She was even afraid of catching some disease.

The darkness in Yan Huai’s eyes deepened further.

He Wei’s fingers tangled together again. Her eyelashes lifted and lowered a few times. After several rounds of hesitation, her gaze fell onto Yan Huai’s right hand.

When she grabbed the medicine box earlier, she might have used too much force. The area around his index finger and the base of his thumb were still red. When she was in school, even a light scrape from paper would hurt—let alone being cut forcefully by a hard cardboard edge.

He Wei’s eyes flickered. “Sorry… I didn’t do it on purpose…”

She had just been angry at Yan Huai’s tone.

It felt very invasive.

He Wei felt that her period might really be coming soon—her temper had been worse than usual these past few days. Now that she had calmed down, she softened her voice and asked, “…Does it hurt?”

Yan Huai had originally almost forgotten about it.

It did hurt a little, but he had experienced far worse pain before. This kind of mark that didn’t even count as a wound was completely insignificant.

But when He Wei looked at him with those soft, gentle eyes, he somehow instinctively let out a “mm.”

“Does it really hurt that much?” He Wei’s guilt deepened. She didn’t even notice the faint curve at the corner of Yan Huai’s lips. “Let me take a look…”

She reached her hand out, then stopped just before touching him.

He Wei felt that something about her today was off.

Just as she was about to pull her hand back, her fingertip was grasped by him.

“He Wei,” Yan Huai looked at her, “let me hold you for one minute, okay?”
