Chapter 33
Chapter 33
Yan Huai’s fingers were even warmer. The place He Wei’s hand was held felt as if it had been burned. She instinctively tried to pull her hand back.
The other party didn’t use much force, and He Wei easily withdrew her hand. She straightened her posture, looked straight ahead, and said nothing.
A silence fell between them.
After a moment, just as He Wei was about to speak, the driver’s side window was knocked a few times.
At the same time, a system prompt sounded in her mind: “Reminder to the host: respond cautiously to Yan Chen’s questions.” System
“……”
As soon as that was said, Yan Huai had already rolled the window down.
Yan Chen’s voice came in from outside the car: “Brother, can you help me with something?”
He Wei shifted slightly toward the other side, trying her best to avoid being seen by Yan Chen.
She didn’t have a boyfriend right now, and Yan Chen’s favorability level hadn’t reached eighty-five. One wrong move could cause a major problem, so it was safer not to appear in front of him.
Unsettled, He Wei almost pressed herself against the door.
Yan Huai glanced sideways at her, his brows faintly furrowing.
Yan Chen seemed to have expected that Yan Huai would agree, and continued on his own: “I have a friend who hasn’t signed with an agency yet. She’s planning to sign recently. Brother, can you help check if our company has any good agents who could take her on…”
Only after finishing did he notice that there was a woman sitting in the passenger seat.
Since Yan Chen hadn’t leaned into the driver’s window, he couldn’t see what the woman looked like—only that delicate, pale wrist. It looked very beautiful.
He couldn’t help but glance at it a few more times.
Yan Huai’s brows furrowed even tighter. “What’s her name?”
Only then did Yan Chen look away and replied with a sigh of relief, “Song Ling.”
This person, He Wei had heard of before. She was a model who transitioned into the entertainment industry. She was 175 cm tall, with a perfect figure. However, her professional skills weren’t very good—she had nearly ruined runway shows several times and had to rely on others to save the situation.
After turning twenty-five, no matter how good her body was, her lack of ability made it hard for her to survive in the modeling industry. Fortunately, she still had some fame and an okay face, and she had recently taken on a drama.
Most likely, she was yet another of Yan Chen’s “new tastes.”
He Wei turned her head and quietly rolled her eyes at the car window.
While looking down on Yan Chen, she also incidentally looked down on the trashy author.
And then, the backlash for looking down on the author came quickly—she heard Yan Chen ask, “Brother, is the person in the passenger seat your girlfriend?”
He knew very well that Yan Huai’s passenger seat was rarely occupied by women.
The only woman who had ever sat in his passenger seat—Song Ying—was currently lying in a hospital bed with her arm in a cast and hanging in a sling.
The curiosity in Yan Chen’s eyes grew even stronger. He even briefly wanted to bend down and get a glimpse of the woman inside.
He Wei heard the system’s notification sound again.
This time it didn’t speak at all, just kept going: “beep beep beep.”
Yan Chen’s voice continued along with the noisy “beep” sounds. This time he changed his question, “My future sister-in-law?”
Yan Huai tilted his head slightly and caught sight of the woman who was almost fused with the car door. Her face was pale, her ears red as if they were about to bleed, and her right hand tightly gripped the door handle, as if she might bolt out of the car at any moment.
He withdrew his gaze and gave a faint, indifferent “mm.”
He Wei suddenly had a bad feeling.
As expected, she heard Yan Chen ask again, “Can’t I say hello to my sister-in-law?”
He Wei: “……”
This bastard—why did he have so many damn problems?
Since the system had specifically warned her earlier, it definitely meant she couldn’t just let Yan Chen see her casually.
While thinking about how to deal with the system’s instructions, He Wei called out to it, “Sweetie?”
System: “beep, beep beep…”
He Wei: “Say something…”
System: “beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep…”
……
The “sweet and innocent system” seemed to have malfunctioned. No matter how many times she asked, it only responded with the same “beep” sounds.
System: “beep, beep beep beep beep beep beep beep.”
“……”
He Wei had no idea what it was trying to say. In just over ten seconds, she made up her mind under the system’s “demonic” beeping.
Outside, Yan Chen was still talking. “Just say hello, it won’t take long.”
He Wei exhaled. Instinctively, she felt she couldn’t be seen by Yan Chen right now. Without time to think further, before Yan Huai could respond, she quickly reached out and grabbed Yan Huai’s left hand.
She used a lot of force, her palm slightly sweaty—she almost couldn’t hold on.
Yan Huai had originally been turned sideways, speaking to Yan Chen outside, when suddenly a soft, delicate hand covered his.
He Wei had taken the initiative to hold his hand.
Because of Yan Chen.
He could tell that He Wei didn’t want Yan Chen to see her.
Yan Huai’s throat rolled slightly. A surge of suppressed irritation rose up and clogged his throat. He became a bit restless, pulled his hand out from hers, frowned, and tugged at his tie. “Let’s do it another day.”
He was angry inside, but still followed her meaning and added, “She’s shy around strangers.”
The man outside finally let out an “oh.”
Although he was somewhat unwilling to have failed to see the beauty in the car, since Yan Huai had said so, he couldn’t possibly force it. He nodded. “Then we’ll meet again next time.”
Yan Huai slightly dipped his chin, then raised the window and drove the car out of the parking space.
In the passenger seat, He Wei looked down at her empty left hand and froze.
So she had finally taken the initiative once, and she was still rejected?
The tip of her ear burned even more, and her heart felt increasingly wronged.
The system finally recovered its voice at this moment. “Host, I’m back to normal.”
He Wei didn’t want to talk.
System: “Just now the main system wouldn’t let me remind you wuwuwu.”
“……”
The system thought she was angry at it, and its tone gradually became guilty and aggrieved. “Wuwuwu I’m sorry, host… you did great just now… when favorability hasn’t reached 85, Yan Chen can’t be allowed to see you with his brother… otherwise the favorability will drop sharply.”
He Wei finally responded with a soft “mm.”
Although the system was naive and overly sweet, it still had some awareness. Seeing that her mood wasn’t good, it simply went quiet and stopped speaking.
The hospital wasn’t far from He Wei’s residence—no more than ten minutes by car.
The atmosphere inside the car was unprecedentedly tense. To distract herself, He Wei opened a job recruitment website. She planned to hire a small assistant.
There would be more and more things to deal with in the future, and her body was already not in good condition. If she relied entirely on herself, she might not be killed by others in the story—but instead exhaust herself to death first.
Posting a job listing required identity verification. He Wei rummaged through her photo album and finally found an old ID screenshot. Just as she was about to upload it, the car stopped.
She looked up—they had already arrived at the entrance of her residential complex. She said naturally, “Building 17, Unit 1.”
After a pause, she suddenly felt something was off.
She remembered that last time when Yan Huai had sent her home, she had deliberately given a different address so as not to be entangled with him.
He Wei suddenly turned her head.
Yan Huai continued driving into the complex without even glancing at her, and said calmly, “Your audition materials listed your home address.”
“……”
So he had known the address was wrong last time?
He Wei had once thought she was clever. Now looking at it again, she wasn’t clever at all—she was simply stupid.
Her brows tightened slightly, and she bit her lower lip.
Yan Huai quickly parked the car downstairs at her building. He Wei loosened her teeth and muttered a soft “thank you.”
The man in the driver’s seat was unbuckling his seatbelt.
He Wei turned to look at him, and by the time she reacted and reached for her seatbelt, Yan Huai had already gotten out of the car one step ahead.
She couldn’t figure out his thoughts. After getting out and closing the door, just as she turned around, her wrist was grabbed and she was pressed against the car door.
He Wei wasn’t wearing high heels today, so the height difference between them was at its maximum. She heard a low male voice above her head, faintly mixed with coldness and anger:
“So you like him that much?”
“……”
He Wei was stunned by that question for a moment. Just as she began to understand it, she heard him ask again, “You’re afraid he’ll see you with me, aren’t you, He Wei?”
“I didn’t…”
He Wei finally understood why he had just pulled his hand away earlier. Her heart stirred, but she couldn’t quite find a way to explain it. After hesitating for a few seconds, she half-truthfully said, “I just think it’s a bit awkward… after all, you’re his biological older brother.”
Breaking up with the younger brother not long ago, and then getting involved with the older brother… how morally corrupt that would be.
As she spoke, He Wei almost convinced herself. Her tone was soft and a little uncertain. “I think it wouldn’t be very good if he saw us like this…”
When she said this, she didn’t dare lift her eyes at all. Her head was slightly lowered, eyelashes downcast, and she caught a glimpse of Yan Huai’s belt buckle.
After looking at it for a few seconds, she felt that place was somewhat indecent and quickly averted her gaze. When she looked up again, she met the man’s unfathomable eyes.
He asked, “Like what?”
They were too close. He Wei could clearly notice the movement of his throat as he spoke, and her own very light swallow.
She slowed her breathing and swallowed very carefully. Just as she turned her gaze away, she was suddenly pulled into his embrace. “Like this?”
The man’s embrace was warm and broad. He Wei caught a faint scent of cigarette smoke on him, mixed with a subtle bitterness of some medicine—unexpectedly pleasant.
He Wei stiffened for a moment, then lightly grabbed his sleeve. “I didn’t…”
She wanted to say she hadn’t intended to reconcile with Yan Chen and didn’t like him anymore, but before she could finish, a warm, moist sensation suddenly landed on her earlobe.
He Wei’s ears instantly burned. Her ears were extremely sensitive; in that instant, it felt as if an electric current ran through her entire body. Her breathing became chaotic, and her legs went slightly weak.
Yan Huai’s kiss landed behind her ear.
He Wei could barely stand steady, her voice trembling. “What are you doing…”
They were still outside, and someone could pass by at any moment.
Just as she finished speaking, the man’s lips left her ear.
The next second, before she could even breathe in relief, her chin was gently lifted by his fingers. Before she could react, his kiss descended overwhelmingly.
It brushed over her lips, then slipped into the corner of her mouth, forcing past her teeth. His movements were rough yet tender, the hand holding her wrist tightening noticeably. He Wei heard his muffled voice:
“Kissing you.”
